Abysm of Ages

Even Stegosaurus experienced a few incomprehensible reconstructions before those mighty plates were discovered a few years later and made the animal immediately iconic, cementing itself as a beacon of paleo pop-culture as early as 1912 in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel The Lost World. Somehow they got even stranger for a while once those plates were uncovered, but flying Stegosaurus has to have its own dedicated post someday. What strikes me about the Victorian Stegosaurus is how plausible it feels as a real animal, its construction doesn't feel too off from many extant reptiles, and different dinosaurs that have since been discovered.

What strikes me even more intensely is how it just looks like a prototype Godzilla, particularly in that illustration where it terrorizes a Victorian brownstone. I know Godzilla's always been inspired by various dinosaurs, one has to wonder if Honda et al were aware of these reconstructions when putting the king of monsters together.

Anyways, back to Iguanodon next week...
