True Detective Conclusion

Here we are finally! Thank you so much for your patience. I'm sorry this conclusion is a bit lacking, I'm not super happy with it and I've done two editing passes to try and save it, but I don't know. Hopefully it's not too bad once I get into my stride with it.

I'm trying to think of a way we could crowd source planning out a complete guide on it, like sections/index etc, so if you have any thoughts on that please let me know. I know it's been quite a garbled live reaction across six hours, but I think I'm pretty close to having it fully locked down and it does seem like a wasted effort to not do it proper justice at some point. I'm going to re-read a bit of Chambers and Poe and see how I feel I guess.

Few other bits of housekeeping:

1. If you haven't already, please go vote in the poll below this post as I will be announcing the winner soon.
2. If you are an artist, or know a very good artist, now would be a good time to get in touch with me as I'm looking to start making assets for the Beau video. Portfolio and prices in a DM if possible!
3. If you're waiting on a reply/DM from me about something, I am sorry - I'm just super swamped at the minute, I will get round to it!
4. I will be reordering the past content into (better) collections over the next few days for ease of access. I am really sorry in advance if that spams your email inboxes. I've subscribed to a few fellow creators over the last couple of weeks for Beau-related stuff and I've been shocked by how frequently Patreon peppers the inbox.

Voodoo was and is practiced in the USA, yes. Go to New Orleans, there are a bunch of Voodoo 'shops' where you can buy spells! But voodoo, based on my limited knowledge, isn't evil. It's an amalgam of native African rituals/ spirituality and Christianity. So the detectives at the end saying 'they were practicing voodoo' is a bit dismissive and derogatory and no, not what the cult was doing, at all, really.

Re: the affected English accent, I think he started it because of whatever was in the TV, but all the books stacked around the house imply that he is quite intelligent and a reader (where he got the term “constitutional”). And of course, different masks/roles/personalities. Re: Voodoo…this takes place in Louisiana where voodoo was practiced by enslaved people, so that tracks

Yes PLEASE do a pre-raphaelite analysis!

Hey James, off-topic, but I recently came across a thorough and insightful scholarly discussion on Nosferatu (2024) that I think you might find interesting. It could be a valuable resource for your research when you get to it, or even just as someone who appreciated the film. I really enjoyed it and hope you do too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-VtlaQ27Nc&list=WL&index=1&t=5s&ab_channel=Atun-SheiFilms

Fourth Horseman

oh man.. I had a very different reading of the ending. Rust, in that between life and death state, found his loved ones in the dark, in the *deepest darkness*, but got pulled back into the light. the knowledge he was ripped away from his daughter in the dark is what breaks him. that scene, to me, is Rust grieving what he lost by coming back to life.

Finishing rewatching this and what a great video — loved all the stuff you pointed out. One thing I realized on this rewatch that I really liked was the fact that the last episode being called “Form and Void.” That term of course comes from the beginning of the King James Bible which is “In the beginning, the earth was without form and void” which of course is a reference to Rust’s words “it used to be all darkness.” Thanks again for doing this series!

Nick

Omg YAY time to rewatch all the previous vids leading up to this haha

Caroline

It’s a great touch for sure — love the video, was so glad to see you were doing True Detective because it’s gotta be my favorite piece of media out there

Nick

Happy to see the conclusion and enjoyed your analysis / observations. Curious what you thought of Dark, since you were discussing candidates for best television series towards the end there.

Stitches

You may be looking for the words Cthulian or Lovecraftian, in case you’re like me and find it impossible to give up on something once it’s stuck in your craw.

Graham Macy

Loved it! Honestly didn't sound too rambly to me, I think you made good points all around and anyway your rambles are just as fun to listen to. Personally I think you're right that Childress is the Stranger, and that he's trying to ascend (maybe to become a king in yellow himself?). Perhaps that's why he was allowed to fail, as punishment for trying to ascend above his "station" as emissary. I also think not showing a King in Yellow as a character onscreen could be a choice by the show to keep him mysterious and potent as a symbol, the same way we never see the full tape or read the full text of the play.

Mary Delaney

Yeah it's an all-timer for sure!

Ffffff I can't believe I didn't point that out! I was aware of it from when I originally watched it but forgot to mention that entirely. Thank you so much for this, it's an amazing touch!

Novum

Sorry if I missed you mentioning, but did you notice that at the end of the second to last episode where Childress is mowing, he’s mowing in a circular manner like a spiral?

Nick

Great stuff. Thank for talking about it. I still find it hard to beat.

Rufus Evans

This might be your whistling tune. https://youtu.be/w5s2NDV1Nhg?si=pt2gCTPj5lT5okA3

Yay I have something to watch in work tomorrow 👌

Barry Hurst

Frist. No but really thank goodness this reminded me to finish your true detective analysis!
