Those were really mostly invented back during men in a certain era in medieval times and probably the early-mid 1900's eras. Mostly worn by high society men or those who could use with a sword. It's oddly helpful to have more of an extra stepping stone of reach to stab your opponents or cut them. It has it pros and cons. I remember a video talked about them.
