The B.E.E. Podcast - 7/12/20 - Rufus Wainwright - SILVER
Added 2020-07-13 02:30:46 +0000 UTC
Bret Easton Ellis does a mid-year roundup of movies and television shows he has enjoyed so far in 2020, including The Crown, ZeroZeroZero and Pixar's Onward. Rufus Wainwright and Bret discuss signing with a major label in a bygone artistic era, being disliked by Liza Minnelli and checking into rehab after consulting Elton John.
The What We Do In The Shadows film is SO good and funny and very sweet. I've seen it several times.

DeSica's Umberto D. is so good! But, my wife bawled and says she'll never see it again.

Morrissey is the best! He's always said that he doesn't like labels, that they are there just to make people feel bad.

I had a friend ages ago that had a tendency to get names wrong. For example, he always called Rufus ‘Rupert’, and he was from NY and had an accent so it was even funnier to me. We saw him at I believe the Wilshire Ebel early ‘00’s (great show with a touching encore cameo with his father Louden.) This guy passed away a few years ago but I still crack up when I think of him saying ‘what time is the Rupahht show again?’ Definitely a you had to be there thing but a warm memory as an Xer of past great times from listening to this one.

Great to hear Bret's take on Mysterious Skin, a vastly overlooked and under-rated film which is as moving and complex as anything I've seen. Maybe one day people will make films like this again?

To start appreciating opera, I may suggest watching Jean-Jacques Beneix’s 80’s film Diva. La Wally is its main theme and its easy to love.

DEVS was well executed, but the lead actress is a vacuum, sucking up any charm or urgency the series might have had.

Great episode. Further to when they talk about their looks: I remember Bret from 2008 when he was the headliner of the international book festival in Budapest (Hungary). There was a huge line of fans clutching mostly their American Psycho copies, then Bret entered. Sleek, ethereal, elegant. He was the most beautiful human being I have ever seen. He was donning leather driver gloves, looked like this high fashion aviator from a highly stylized movie, very Don Draper. I was so stunned that I convinced my friends that instead of standing in line for a couple of awkward seconds while he signs our book (for me it would have been Glamorama), we should stand close to the autograph booth and watch him while he politely and coolly does it for everyone else. Our staring was so direct, that at one point he looked at us, we were waving like crazy and he waved back. I said, that's it. This is more than we could have wished for. So cool, I never felt so cool and happy as then. So yes, Bret did look great when he was 44.

Another great episode! Bret, would you consider devoting one of your opening monologues to discussing all the lockdown reading you’ve been doing? Would love to hear your thoughts on books as well as movies

It’s so refreshing to hear Bret vent his feelings about the madness of our current world. Would really love for him to have David Mamet or get Bret on Joe Rogan. Been a listener of BEE podcast since the beginning! Love everything you produce. Thank you.

Really cool monologue. Kael sandwiched between Didion on Covid. Second most asked question: What's your central trauma? Also, a real discussion on the state of music. Lyrics are bad these days; Rufus puts it right... In need of a First Cow review.

Can’t wait to listen. May I post a mild complaint about the recent schedule of dropping these on a Sunday night? What about Sunday AM? One could wake up with eager anticipation and listen as breakfast and errands and pool tanning are slowly achieved. Just a thought!
