Poetical Gore

I’m sure you’re all aware what happened in the recent British general election where the hard left British Labour opposition suffered its worst electoral defeat since 1935. They were defeated by the Conservative party, who were lead by a much reviled (on social media anyway) right wing politician who is often called the ‘British Trump’. This video is an interview with a non-partisan, British academic. He explains the causes of Labour’s catastrophic defeat. I appreciate its long but the parallels to what’s happening in America and what could well happen in the coming year are striking... https://youtu.be/3kf1YKeq7lA

love all of Brett’s criticisms of Trump derangement syndrome and his aesthetics over ideology talking points, but this episode was too political for me...also, Richard Jewell is an alright,(not alt-right) movie

Good listen. One point that was not mentioned for the current state of hysteria in politics and journalism in this podcast: current politics and culture are being damaged and shaped by the universities and colleges whose tenured leftist professors lack all measure of scruple or fair mindedness. Students force fed leftist ideology and socialist ideals, who eagerly gobble up socialism and fascist tactics and enter the workforce with open hatred for all manner of western civilization with a personal jihad on America as we know it - many journalists are rewarded for a lack morality and the networks allow misinformation because controversy increases ratings.

I liked this episode just like any other. The criticism seems like a vocal minority here.

Hearing Mark and BEE discuss records was a little silly. Mark not knowing his Costello catalog, BEE making the dumb comment that Prince never made anything good after Sign O The Times is absurd. I bet he couldn’t name 5 albums after Sign. Also, Lovesexy (the record after SOTT) is largely viewed as a classic, same with Gold Exp. Its embarrassing when this happens on this show, BEE is usually so sharp.

Mark's comment about being a narcissist and having to find a balance between swaggering and cowering is brilliant.

I’m thinking about buying Mark Halperin’s book, although I’m very hopeful Trump is re-elected in 2020. From the conversation Mark and Brett had, I don’t see democrats doing anything that is being suggested to beat Trump. They are just too wound up, and irate, why?, no one knows.

Jacqui lenhardt

But is BEE still with Todd? I was confused there.

Alexander Quattlander

Richard Jewell was great. The guy did get rail roaded by tbe FBI and Media. Just because that also happened to Trump dont get triggered dude.

Alexander Quattlander

This is the best episode of the year!! I loved it. However it was disappointing that Mark completely omitted Andrew Yang from the discussion.

Halperin claims Obama ‘re-regulated the banks’ surely he’s joking? He did nothing of the kind, prosecuted nobody (after the biggest financial scam in history), the banks are bigger and riskier than ever...and he got his payoff once out of office.

Lundon, DiCaprio and Hill both got this film into significant phases of development (by agreeing to act in the film, they both dropped out). They were credited as Producers for helping it get to production. Again, it’s a technically and aesthetically horrible movie—mostly because the movie holds ideology above craft and design. It’s value is based in how people feel before they sit in the theater, how it reinforces this feeling during the viewing and as they leave. It doesn’t do anything to challenge the audience. It placates the audience. Just like wacko ideologically based liberal films, it’s intellectually cheap. Again, it’s a total waste of a “movie”. DiCaprio having a credit doesn’t discredit any of the things I’ve stated. You’re going to have to do better to convince me that this film isn’t just a pandering cash grab.

you should let the producer Leonardo DiCaprio know, he’s a huge conservative I guess who had Richard Jewell in development since 2012. Also who put the gun to your head to watch it? Or do you just like to complain on the internet like people are dying to hear your thoughts?

Lundon Boyd

And, it’s obviously a terrible movie... that fits BEE’s kooky political narrative. I don’t mind him spouting off, I only mind when the ‘ideology vs aesthetic argument’ is muddied by BEE’s ideology

M. Nero Nava

But that is what happened to Richard Jewel. It wasn’t “ideology”. It was actual events

David Martignetti

I’m astounded that you could waste my time with ten minutes talking about that useless and flavorless Richard Jewel movie. I always want a refund when YOU discuss ideology over aesthetics. Clint Eastwood’s movies are all ideology and no aesthetic value. Seriously. A movie about the FBI and media are the enemy? Sound familiar?

M. Nero Nava

BEE’s boyfriend seems awful. A spoiled, entitled, man-child who gloms on to a sugar daddy while praising socialism.

David Martignetti

Great show

This was so enjoyable. Wonderful to hear Mark's current views, details from the book so important. But must say, Bret, thank you for giving voice to a much needed discussion about parameters following Mark's experience, his progress, his wish to work, his family. Even more, it was delightful to listen to the two of you go light and share some personal history, views and reviews. Terrific, all told.
