Rogue Two (Part 5)

My favorite moments in Film Reroll are moments that we find that are there, in the movie, hidden, but that I had never noticed. Spoilers for this episode:

The confrontation in the council chamber, with Luke finding out who his father was in front of everyone, happened organically in the moment. I didn't foresee it, but when Luke pointed out that his father fought alongside Kenobi, it felt natural that Mon Mothma would ask who his father was, and that the truth would tumble out from there. I loved the scene that came out of it, but it only occurred to me after the fact that this moment could very well have happened in the actual movie. Obviously, not in the shape it took; Obi-Wan is dead by this point, and Jyn Erso and Kaki didn't exist. But Luke could have found out at any moment who his father was. It didn't have to happen from Darth Vader, climactically in cloud city. It could have slipped out in the council, or at any point.

Which brings up the question of how well-known Darth Vader's identity actually is. Luke is running around with his father's last name, introducing himself like an idiot, with the surname of a war criminal. I suppose this tells us that the movie did not intend Darth Vader's identity to be well-known. Or perhaps, the depth of Anakin's dissolution was not intended to be as dark as what's in the prequels. A lot of this lore is established in the prequels, and I have often complained that what's actually in the prequels seems to contradict what's implied by the originals. But at this point we can't just wipe the prequels from our minds. Even in my reroll, where the prequels are not canon, there is still there penumbra hanging over the proceedings, I have to accept that the prequel events are *roughly* canon, because they're just too well known to contradict wholeheartedly without causing confusion. I would love to do a true rewrite of the canon, but that's a different project. And would be distracting here.
