Totally agree (and surprised I forgot to mention that!) If I hadn't have raised Whip the way I would have raised a service dog, it would have been hard for her to jump in when my disability required it. And yes, training with the expectation of more mobility loss or vision loss etc. can be a really good idea.

Sorry I missed this live, I'm catching up on videos today. I do want to comment on the question about the service dog being a last resort. For people who are likely to see a decline in their disability, or might see a decline, starting before you need the dog could be important planning. My disability took a quick decline unexpectedly, and I was really lucky as a dog lover that I had worked so much with my Golden who was just a pet, but thrived on training. Because I worked to meet his training needs, I was just a few steps away from him doing service dog work at the time that I really needed him. We don't have a way to predict this all the time, so it is a lifestyle choice that can be great preplanning.

This live was 5am my time but I’ll keep trying to see if there’s a time that works for me, I’m determined to attend one lol. Here in New Zealand we also use “CGC” with all the different versions of it, I wonder what other countries use it as well. Your advice for what to do when your dog brings you something you don’t need is great and timely for us now - Petrie is now really good at finding and bringing me my slippers, but she’s started to generalise and bring me other shoes / my partners slippers without being asked to, and I wasn’t sure what to do. Now I do 😁 (thankfully when I ask her to find/get my slippers she only brings the correct ones).
