CG C128: Spiritual Beast Tribulation
Added 2024-10-11 23:37:13 +0000 UTCZhi-Zhi stood outside Cang Long's cave, his tiny shell quivering as he gazed up at the darkening sky. He knew what was coming - his Foundation Establishment tribulation.
What if my shell isn't strong enough? What if the lightning cracks it open like an egg? Zhi-Zhi's thoughts raced, each more terrifying than the last.
He took a deep breath, trying to calm down. "Okay," he muttered to himself, "I can do this. I’m not fighting anyone. It's not a battle. It's just... standing still while the sky tries to kill me."
He paused, realizing his pep talk wasn't very encouraging.
"No, no, that's not right," he said, shaking his head. "It's a test. A test of my defenses. And defense is what I do best, right? I’m a tortoise! The most defensive creature in the world!"
As if in response to his words, a deafening roar echoed from inside the cave. Zhi-Zhi jumped, his shell clattering against the ground.
"Master?" he squeaked, peering into the darkness of the cave.
"It's time, my disciple! Show the heavens what you're made of!" Cang Long's voice boomed out.
Zhi-Zhi gulped. There was no turning back now. He closed his eyes, focusing on the qi flowing through his body. He could feel it - the barrier between the Qi Refining realm and the Foundation Establishment realm. He was already halfway there, teetering on the edge. This tribulation would push him over, helping him build his first Foundation pillar.
Here goes nothing.
With a mental push, Zhi-Zhi released the restraint on his qi. It surged forward, breaking past the barrier and rushing into the Foundation Establishment realm. The moment it did, thunder roared from the heavens, so loud it shook the ground beneath him.
Zhi-Zhi's eyes snapped open, and he gasped at the sight above him. The clouds were swirling, merging together into a shape. Not just any shape - a tortoise. A massive tortoise made entirely of clouds.
It was similar to Zhi-Zhi in many ways, but the differences were striking. Its shell was more defined, with intricate patterns etched into the cloudy surface. Its limbs were longer, ending in sharp, dangerous-looking claws. The head was larger, with a more pronounced beak.
Is that... is that what I'll look like if I succeed?
The thought filled Zhi-Zhi with a mix of excitement and terror. He wanted to grow stronger, to become more impressive. But the idea of changing so much... it was scary.
Inside the cave, Cang Long watched the proceedings with keen interest. His massive form shifted as he nodded approvingly at the sight of the cloud tortoise.
Ah, the tribulation of a spiritual beast. So different from that of human cultivators, yet no less challenging.
For spiritual beasts like Zhi-Zhi and himself, breakthroughs were less about comprehending the Dao and more about refining their bloodline. With each realm they conquered, their blood became purer, closer to that of their immortal ancestors. It was a process of transformation, of becoming more like the legendary creatures they descended from.
Zhi-Zhi is fortunate. As a Spirit Shell Tortoise, he already possesses a noble lineage. It will make him stronger than other tortoises at the same cultivation level, and his journey should be smoother.
A flicker of movement caught Cang Long's eye. The cloud tortoise was moving, its massive head turning towards Zhi-Zhi. Cang Long's eyes narrowed. The tribulation was beginning.
Outside, Zhi-Zhi watched in terror as the cloud tortoise's eyes fixed on him. There was a moment of stillness, a calm before the storm. Then, without warning, a bolt of lightning shot from the tortoise's mouth.
Zhi-Zhi didn't think. He acted on pure instinct, retreating into his shell as fast as he could. The lightning struck a heartbeat later.
The world exploded into light and sound. The ground shook violently, and for a terrible moment, Zhi-Zhi thought his shell would crack. But it held.
As the light faded and the rumbling subsided, Zhi-Zhi cautiously poked his head out. He was still in one piece.
"I... I did it? I survived the first strike!"
Before he could celebrate further, he felt a strange sensation. Some of the energy from the tribulation was seeping into his body, changing him ever so slightly. His shell felt a bit heavier, his limbs a bit stronger. When he looked at his claws, he noticed they were just a tiny bit longer and sharper.
I'm changing. Becoming more like that tortoise in the sky…
But there was no time to dwell on these changes. The sky rumbled again, and Zhi-Zhi looked up to see the cloud tortoise preparing another attack.
This time, instead of lightning, a stream of fire poured from its mouth. Zhi-Zhi yelped and ducked back into his shell, bracing for impact.
The heat was intense, washing over his shell in waves. Zhi-Zhi could feel his shell heating up, but it didn't burn. As the flames died down, he emerged, smoke rising from his shell but otherwise unharmed.
"Zhi-Zhi!" Cang Long's voice boomed from the cave. "Remember your training! Use the Shell Reinforcement technique!"
Zhi-Zhi nodded, gathering his qi. He focused on channeling it into his shell, creating a protective layer. Just in time, too - the next attack came in the form of sharp stone spikes raining down from the sky.
They clattered against his reinforced shell, unable to penetrate. Zhi-Zhi allowed himself a small smile. Maybe I can do this after all.
But the tribulation was far from over. The attacks came one after another, each testing a different aspect of Zhi-Zhi's defenses.
Next came a massive gust of wind, so powerful it threatened to lift Zhi-Zhi off the ground. He dug his claws into the earth, desperately trying to anchor himself.
"Stone Stance!" Cang Long instructed. "Make yourself as heavy as a mountain!"
Zhi-Zhi focused on another technique he had learned during his training. He channeled his qi downward, imagining roots growing from his body into the earth. Gradually, he felt himself becoming heavier, more stable.
The wind howled around him, but Zhi-Zhi held his ground.
A torrent of water then tried to sweep him off the mountain. Zhi-Zhi used his newly strengthened limbs to stand firm against the current.
With each attack, Zhi-Zhi felt himself changing, growing stronger. His shell became harder, his claws sharper, his mind clearer. The energy of the tribulation was refining him, purifying his bloodline.
Through it all, Cang Long's voice guided him, reminding him of techniques they'd practiced.
As the eighth attack faded - a barrage of icy spears that shattered against his shell - Zhi-Zhi felt a sense of accomplishment. I've almost done it. Just one more to go!
But when he looked up at the cloud tortoise, his newfound confidence wavered. The massive creature was moving, no longer content to attack from afar. It was diving straight towards him, its cloudy form growing larger by the second.
Zhi-Zhi's eyes widened in terror. "M-Master?" he called out, his voice shaking. "What do I do?"
Cang Long's reply was calm, filled with confidence in his disciple. "Stand your ground, little one. Your shell is your greatest weapon and your strongest defense. Trust in it. Trust in yourself."
Zhi-Zhi wanted to run, to hide, to do anything but stand there as the giant tortoise descended upon him. But he forced himself to stay put, drawing on every ounce of courage he possessed.
He closed his eyes, focusing all his qi into his shell. I am a Spirit Shell Tortoise, he told himself. My shell is impenetrable. I am strong. I can do this.
The cloud tortoise crashed into him like a meteor. For a moment, Zhi-Zhi thought he would be crushed. But then, to his amazement, the cloudy form enveloped him instead. It was like being swallowed whole; everything went dark, and he felt as if he was floating in a vast, empty space.
Then, suddenly, pure, unfiltered energy poured into him from all sides, filling every part of his being. It was overwhelming, almost painful in its intensity. But beneath the discomfort, Zhi-Zhi could feel himself changing, evolving.
His shell hardened and expanded. His limbs grew stronger. He could feel his very essence being refined, purified by the tribulation energy.
Outside, Cang Long watched as the cloud tortoise swallowed his disciple. The massive creature looked satisfied, even smug. It let out a loud burp, cloudy wisps escaping its mouth.
For a moment, nothing happened. Then, the cloud tortoise began to bulge oddly. Its form shimmered and wavered, like a mirage in the desert.
Suddenly, with a sound like thunder, the cloud tortoise exploded outward. As the cloudy fragments dissipated, they revealed Zhi-Zhi, standing tall and proud.
But this wasn't the Zhi-Zhi who had started the tribulation. This Zhi-Zhi was larger, his shell more defined and patterned. His limbs were longer, ending in sharper claws. His head was slightly bigger, an aura of power rolled off him - the unmistakable aura of Early Foundation Establishment.
As Zhi-Zhi stood there, the wind around him started to move strangely. It swirled gently, as if drawn to him. Small pebbles and bits of dirt near his feet trembled and shifted slightly. He could feel the wind and earth responding to him in a way they never had before. It was like they were saying hello to their new friend.
"Well done, little one! You've successfully entered the Foundation Establishment realm!” Cang Long's face split into a wide grin. He lumbered out of the cave, each step causing mini-earthquakes. When he reached Zhi-Zhi, he extended one massive claw and gently patted his disciple on the shell. “How do you feel?"
Zhi-Zhi looked up at his master, his eyes wide with wonder. "I feel... different. Stronger. Like I could move a mountain if I wanted to."
Cang Long chuckled. "That's the power of Foundation Establishment. But don't get too ahead of yourself. Moving mountains comes much later."
Zhi-Zhi nodded, still in awe at his new form. He flexed his claws, feeling the increased strength in them. "Master, was your Foundation Establishment tribulation like this too?"
A gleam entered Cang Long's eye, one that Zhi-Zhi had come to recognize. It meant a story was coming.
"Oh, my tribulation?" Cang Long said, puffing up his massive chest. "Well, let me tell you, it was quite the spectacle. The sky turned completely black, and not just any black - it was so dark it seemed to swallow light itself!"
Zhi-Zhi settled in, knowing this could take a while. But for once, he didn't mind. He was too excited about his breakthrough to be annoyed by his master's boasting.
"Lightning rained down like never before. Each bolt was as thick as a mountain and hot enough to melt stone! The ground shook so much, it created new valleys and mountains!"
"Really?" Zhi-Zhi asked, his eyes wide. "That sounds... intense."
"Oh, it was," Cang Long nodded sagely. "But that wasn't even the hardest part. No, the real challenge came when the tribulation took the form of a dragon. It was so large, its body wrapped around the entire mountain range three times!"
"A dragon?” Zhi-Zhi's jaw dropped. “But... but I thought tribulations took the form of your own species?"
Cang Long winked. "Normally, yes. But I'm no ordinary tortoise, am I? I'm a Dragonback Tortoise. The dragon in my bloodline recognized its kin and manifested accordingly."
"Wow," Zhi-Zhi breathed. "So, what happened next?"
"Well," Cang Long said, settling into his storytelling groove, "the dragon attacked with all five elements at once. Fire hot enough to vaporize oceans, water pressure that could crush mountains, wind sharp enough to cut through the hardest materials, lightning that could split the sky, and earth that could reshape continents."
Zhi-Zhi listened. Part of him wondered if his master was exaggerating. But another part, the part that had just experienced the awesome power of a tribulation, couldn't help but believe every word.
"And you survived all that?" Zhi-Zhi asked.
Cang Long nodded proudly. "Not only survived, but thrived! I absorbed the energy of each attack, growing stronger with every moment. By the end, I had grown to twice my original size!"
He leaned in close, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Want to know the secret of how I did it?"
Zhi-Zhi nodded eagerly.
"The key," Cang Long said, tapping his shell, "is to never doubt yourself. Believe in your strength, in your bloodline, in your destiny. The tribulation isn't just a test of your body, but of your spirit. If you waver, you fail. But if you stand firm, nothing can break you."
Zhi-Zhi absorbed these words, feeling their truth resonate within him. Hadn't he done exactly that during his own tribulation? When he stopped doubting and started believing in himself, he had succeeded.
"Thank you, Master, I'll remember that."
"Good. Now, tell me about your experience. What did it feel like inside the cloud tortoise?"
The two tortoises, master and disciple, spent the rest of the day discussing cultivation, tribulations, and the path that lay ahead.
