86 (Eighty Six) S1 Episode 14 Reaction

UTTERLY HEARTBROKEN... so who else got emotional whiplash from this rollercoaster? Cause holy shit, talk about heavy & painful when it comes to Eugene, the tears just wouldn't stop... the whole situation was so messed up & overwhelming, no joke. I'll reuse a phrase I've said time & again, with this series specifically, but "happiness never lasts" which is such bullshit... stop tearing out my heart with all these deaths & developments!!

Fortunately, it wasn't ALL doom & gloom, the reunion itself was VERY surprising and made me so damn happy to see it happen... not to mention, to see the Reaper become "whole" again... such an incredible moment, no doubt.

What did you think of this episode?

eyyy, thanks dude, it's really appreciated that you've been looking forward to these reactions & what I can bring to the table for this incredible series. I guess I can understand the fear/pity when it comes to the 86, though it doesn't mean I agree with it since these kids fought tooth & nail to survive, they don't deserve either... but at least it's still better than what the Republic was doing in terms of discrimination and human rights violations. Sure, it was definitely predictable that it'd happen, but as you said, it's very hard to be prepared for how suddenly it did go down... the realism of the situation still gives me chills & breaks my heart. I wish Eugene didn't die & could've lived to be with Nina, that Shin didn't have to take another comrade's life... but it does make for good storytelling!

Honestly, I thought Shin mostly did it for style points when he jumped atop that Lowe and shot it point blank back in Episode 2, but that does make a whole lot more sense. So I appreciate that their new Juggernauts are much safer with increased firepower, it's definitely been helping out in fights! I agree, the fact it's told chronologically makes it much more powerful personally, as it builds the emotional weight towards Eugene and Nina... I don't mind when a story tells an event out of order though! Damn, you just had to make me sad with that final bit of information when it comes to Shin & Eugene, huh? I would've liked to see it happen in the anime, but not everything can make the cut... at least we did see Shin wipe the photo for Eugene, a very sweet & respectful act for a dying friend..

First of all, welcome back. Lowkey missed your reaction to this series. Always look forward to your insight and observation whenever it comes to the show. And tbf, it’s 50/50 with peoples opinions of the 86. With the army, they fear them just because they had the option to live a normal life after living the life they had before, but for them to come back to the battlefield…yeah. Then you’ve got others who pity them. The latter not really helping as that’s also on the 86 who hate pity so you could say they do it to themselves. And if you found Eugene’s death to be too predictable, we’re literally introduced to him in the LN with Shin shooting him before we get flashbacks of him and Shin meeting in the library, going through training, etc. The anime just put it into chronological order. So his death was very much set in stone before we even got to know him (in the LN). But that still doesn’t prepare you for how *sudden* it happens; it makes it so realistic too because you can be chilling and chatting and the next, that persons gone. Definitely like this route compared to building up a character and then killing them off after a few more episodes.

First of all new mech discussion The old mechs had horrible armor as you know. The small Amiese units could pierce the armor. Plus the cannon was weak and couldn't pierce the larger Lowe tanks. Remember in episode 2 Shin had to jump on top and shoot at a weak spot. The new mechs even though they still have way less armor than the 2 man tanks the rest of Giad uses, the new Juggernauts can bounce the small Legion mech's bullets. Plus their cannon is larger and they can now easily 1v1 a Lowe. Regarding Eugene's death Volume 2 is told out of order chronologically. First thing actually we see is the scene with Shin saving people and talking to Frederica in the Jeep. We also see Eugene die in chapter 2, then jump back to them being rescued and their daily lives in the Federacy. Then we see how Eugene and Shin met. I much prefer the anime telling the story linearly without flashbacks. But since the LN didn't hide Eugene's death flags the anime didn't either. A lot of people when watching are like "Eugune is so going to die" but no one expects him to die RIGHT then/or blown up off camera. The anime was still able to keep it powerful. One last thing, Shin wiped his hands before touching the photo to keep it clean. And this is LN only as it wasn't animated but the first thing Shin did was give Eugene a large dose of morphine out of the first aid kit. It helped with the pain in his final moments P.S The reaper is back. Back to killing his friends on the battlefield
