A person can say that they need love in this way and expect that way to be meet by a partner when there is often something deeper in play. I'm glad it works for you. Rather than list all the mistakes we have made over the years, let me just say that you, Caitlin are spot on. We are at a good place right now. There are many reasons for this but perhaps the most important was the suggestion that we read a book called "The Five Love Languages." Understanding our motivations has allowed us to move past much of our pettiness. Believe me, there's a bit more to this story, but the willingness to grow and change was/is paramount.
