Similar to Katsuki, Izuku’s vibrant patterns do fade when he stops being excited. His markings also become thinner and more diagonal as in the original comic. This is due to evolution and is a safety measure that his kind as developed. As most regular Mer have absolutely no way to fight back against predator type Mer, the often have traits to dissuade/hide from predators instead. Usually in a type of camouflage or pattern to make the enemy look think they’re either poisonous or a different species entirely. So while he doesn’t have strictly chameleon type abilities like a cuddle fish, his markings do change from his regular ones- to his mating ones (similar to how some animals become vibrant colors during mating season to attract a partner)

Cause of this, Izuku’s normal markings are supposed to be more akin to a tiger shark. So at quick glance, he will be mistaken for a shark type Mer instead (I did make them a bit too big in the beginning of the bonus chapter. They we’re supposed to get wider over the course of it) but you’ll see the size difference between them in this one and in the normal comic
