It only gets better and better from here as the story explores the characters in more depth. Also, welcome to the struggle with Haruhi’s pronouns. Just go with what feels right (I use they/them since they don’t seem to identify with any gender). A note that might help (a little) with the twins: each of the guys is playing a specific role in the club based on common shoujo romance manga. Tamaki is the prince. Kyoya is the tsundere. Honey is the cute, innocent type. Mori is the stoic, silent type. And…there is a subgenre of BL with romance between step-brothers. That’s the role Hikaru and Kaoru are playing. But these are all just performances that the guys put on for the girls that come to the club. It’s part of the parody - the guys are performing it bcz it’s popular with girls and the anime is parodying the tropes. You can think of it as guys fucking around doing something taboo because it’s entertaining, not because they actually feel that way.

Like, I wouldn’t consider Haruhi herself trans, but she was a big reason I became comfortable enough to explore with my gender and ultimately becoming a trans man. I love this anime so much and I’m excited to see you react to more of it

That might just be because once the focus isn't on their interactions in the host club they drop the act though. It's still really really weird that's the act they choose to draw in girls though.

When it is funny, it is a lot like Ouran, but when it gets serious, it is gut-wrenching and uncomfortably real within its unrealistic premiss. But please watch the newer version, the first (older) one came out while the manga was still being produced and suffered inconsistencies and an early end because of that.

But, all of the "twincest" stuff is purely them putting on an act for the girls visiting the host club. That's why we have the wide shots where they're just kind of awkwardly standing there, to show that it's an act.

It's meant to make fun of the genre, so the twins being there is part of that portrayal (no matter how much I hate looking at those scenes). As for hikaru and kaoru - I have a cringe/love relationship with them I think they’re supposed to be a commentary on women’s weird ship preferences - honestly I thing it’s a bit sus for the show to make a gay ship entwined with incest, however I love their existence for comedies sake… and I like their attitudes and everything about them despite that niggling at the back of my head

I loved Ouran High Host Club back when I was in Highschool. So much so, that I decided to share it with my boyfriend at the time. Something I thought would have been a great bounding experience for us both. Instead, he bashed the series and shamed me for like it. needless to say, I never shared anything I loved with him again and eventually we broke up. But over the years, anytime I would try to go back and rewatch the show. I would struggle to continue or even start the first episode. It was like anytime I would try, the memory of that experience would pop in my head and I would no longer be in the mood to watch a series that once brought me so much joy. Watching you react to the Ouran Highschool host club has in a way healed that part of me and allowed me to watch the series again with the same joy and happiness I felt before. The thing about the twins is - it's an act. They're putting on a show for the ladies, because it's what the ladies in the show want; and any good host club will cater to what the ladies' want. You'll notice that every time the shot pulls away from the twins to show the ladies' reactions, the twins' faces are made to be as blank as possible lol. That might make the 'incest' a little easier to get through :P

So the more older anime you watch around that time, the more you'll recognize like the same few english voice actors Ouran anime is also very satirical of the classic shoujo-tropes, I'm excited for you to really get to know the characters later on :3

Each of the characters are based on different shojo tropes and each subverts them throughout the show. The twins are based on the weird amount of incest in older shojo, but you’ll notice that they only “perform” incest when they’re around others. They don’t do any of it when they’re by themselves, it’s for the girls who come to see them, and a critique on those who sexualize siblings

Gonna have to rewatch the show now to scratch that itch, watching the dub feels so weird. 😅 Twins are awesome characters, actually - I remember loving their backstory and how it changed my perception of them in the earlier episodes. But my favourite is still Tamaki - again, with the depth provided by the later episodes. He’s got a bit of Dazai in him now that I think about it, although nowhere near to the same extent. A very cool multi layered character (most of them are, this show is golden with characters).

Ouran and Fullmetal Alchemist were both dubbed by Funimation. Also, I like both the twins, but Hikaru is my fave. And I really like Haruhi too!

2025-08-30 04:40:46 +0000 UTCIf it helps at all, the twins (along with everyone at the host club, and the show itself) are really leaning into stereotypes of the genre, often in really overdone/uncomfortable ways. Danny noted it already, but the twins don't actually act weird when they're hanging out outside of the club, and later on he'll see they don't really know when to end a bit to be earnest, so they use their performative stuff as more of a front since that's the version most people/girls like to see. When I read them that way, the gross jokes read more as immature teenage guys taking a bit too far and not truly creepy.

They're mischievous little guys and yes, the incest is weird BUT it's an act they put on for the guests (bc the show is satirizing shoujo anime/manga tropes). I never forgot that scene where Haruhi explains that she doesn't really care about the gender people see her as since it doesn't change the person who she is inside. Even though this show definitely has some flaws that are... of its time, I appreciate that I was able to see an anime character at that point in my life that represented this aspect of myself. I think Tamaki is my favorite because of the melodrama, and it seems like he's trying his best to understand Haruhi, even though the way he goes about it is flawed. Excited for the rest of this series!

There is a lot of speculation that S.A. is eluded to in that episode. Nothing is shown or outright said, but it is speculated that it is implied. So... for anyone sensitive to that kind of thing without spoiling anything, just a warning. Episode 8 also has a problematic scene... but for that scene in particular please keep one thing in mind... KYOYA WAS PLAYING THE GAME TOO. That's all I'll say about it.

2025-08-30 00:57:37 +0000 UTCfyi over here (japan as a whole) high school is only 3 years! elementary is 6, junior high is 3! the pitcher thing is a translation of 攻め/seme, which i'm sure you're familiar with. my favourite host club member is kyouya and it's not even CLOSE but the live action is what really cemented his spot in first place for me. (also the anime ending does deviate from the manga and live action plot lines and it also ends much sooner in the timeline than the manga so important kyouya tidbits are obviously missing</3) i'm not sure if anyone has warned you yet, but without going into detail, episode 8 does have a pretty concerning scene? it's nothing you couldn't handle/would avoid watching content wise and it ends up being all good but it's probably the one episode i think should have a content/trigger warning. i'm sure everyone watching these reactions has already watched the series ahead of time, but just a reminder to anyone who sees this to be careful if you dislike the scene i suppose😭

In yaoi manga and anime, there is a term called “Seme and Uke” that is like top and bottom, but the writers didn’t know the english terms so made up the “pitcher and catcher” for the show. Tamaki = Ed, Haruhi = Winry, Kyoya = Scar, Hikaru = Ling, Renge = May, Mori = Mustang (though he only has a few lines 😀 ) and Honey's little brother = Alphonse ('original' FMA). For being such a gateway anime for many people, the warning "you'll get used to the incestuous twins" ... is such a funny thing to me. Also Haruhi is my favorite, she's such a boss and (while a low bar in anime) its so refreshing to have a female lead who is well written without excessive fanservice

Most the characters in the show do tend to get their focus episode that helps you understand them. As for the twins thing it’s definitely uncomfortable but it helps getting through it to remember that they’re canonically just pretending to appeal to some of the girls because it was an unfortunately popular trope at the time.

You're gonna have such a good time. It's also pretty validating because this was very much thought of as a " a stupid girls anime" in '08. The anime space was a different kind of sexist in the early 2000's and the only guys I would trust would be the ones who could watch Fullmetal and Ouran and see the value in both.

Ouran, in Episode 4, basically does a parody "overture", where they're almost foreshadowing most of the character complexity/plot they're about to get into. Honey-senpai is probably my favouirte of the bunch. Maybe not the most meaningful, but definitely the most hilariously unhinged character background.

So, although it is super duper uncomfy, really it’s just there to highlight the trope in shoujo! Also they DO get wayyyyy better! Like all these terrible antics are at their most uncomfortable in these first few episodes! The twins are gonna get way more fleshed out soon! I’m glad you’re already starting to like them outside of those moments, cause they’re really a wonderful aspect of the show as a whole!

(no spoilers but im excited for you to get to know their personalities outside of the club performance stuff more! the kinda wry attitudes and mischievous humor is iconic, and kaoru is genuinely my favorite club member. glad at least the joke parts are fun for you!)
