Ya Marlene was being entirely selfish, not altruistic. And MAN that whole scene with Joel taking out the fireflies was one of the most well done scenes I've ever seen. The camera work, the acting, THE SOUND DESIGN, it was all so incredible. This show is definitely one of the best I've ever seen and most emotionally impactful. I think everyone involved deserves so much praise and respect for the work they did and the masterpiece they created!

So just finished my marathon watch here... watched your episodes on YouTube yesterday but had to come here and watch the full reacts... fabtastic viewing (yes i combined Fabulous and Fantastic) For me there is no experience I have had that can compare to this show even though there are many amazing series which have had many equally devastating moments... however I do not know of another that has the continuous emotional impact or inflicts the volume of emotional trauma that this does... it basically never stops... (when I watched this I waited until all the episodes were out and binged them... fortunately I survived...) As far as Ellie's "choice" goes, for me Marlene lost automatically because she didn't GIVE Ellie a choice in the first place allowing me to sidestep the very valid issues you raised in the wrap up... One of the favourite things about this series for me are the subtle connections that are easy to miss but will get noticed after multiple viewings... (this occurs a lot in the Game) One of these starts all the way back in episode 1 when Marlene says (to Joel and Tess) "...and I know what you're both capable of. For better or worse." This is teased further by Ellie's follow up question "What are they capable of?" but this question remains unanswered throughout and in fact the series enforces the idea that Joel has indeed lost it and is no longer capable of whatever Marlene was referring to... until this episode where (once Ellie is endangered) we finally see the answer... Joel single handedly wiping out the Firefly base. This is old Joel fully back and in terminator protection mode and it is glorious.

Fabulous comment!!! I've seen The Book of Eli referenced in a lot of places lately and I'd love to see that one!! Haven't seen The Road or The Mandalorian either but The Book of Eli specifically I've been wanting to see!!

Just found the channel, great reactions to this masterpiece of a show... thought I might weigh in with my some things in relation to the series in total, here at the end. It is very interesting watching the reactions to TLOU from both those who have played and those who haven’t. The biggest surprise/issue for those who have played the game seems to stem from the misunderstanding of the requirements of tv/cinema… many things that work in games simply translate horribly or not at all to this medium, which is why (over the years) most of the translations (trying to copy the game beat for beat) have been horrible… TLOU artfully sidesteps this due to the genius of Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann in understanding that the story was primarily the thing that made this game so different and so amazing when it was released. Sure the graphics were great as was the combat system and we enjoyed them thoroughly but it was the story that stuck with us. In translating this to the passive experience that is enjoyed by watching the series, by focussing on that beautiful, disturbing, inspiring and horrifying story and changing it up where necessary, altering the gameplay parts that would NOT translate well , adding depth by expanding the backstories of the characters and adding explanatory scenes for the game itself to enrich the lore and satisfy many of our “yeah but” and “how did” questions they have created the “best by a country mile” video game adaption ever. (Gamers do not start on about Arcane… I get it but Digital does not have the limitation that live action does it is it’s own medium) For those that have not played the game although the response has been overwhelmingly positive (and deservedly so) for some (in a similar fashion to the gamer audience) it does not live up to expectation. I believe the best place to start here is to point out that this is not a “zombie” story and in saying that be aware that I am NOT revisiting the “they’re infected not zombies” argument, which simply establishes the physical realities (live but enslaved not dead) and the various consequences and moral questions that stem from these differences. No, I am pointing out something far less obvious which can be easily missed and that is that, for a start, the zombie genre as a whole has its primary focus on the survival aspect of humanity post-apocalypse and the consequences, generally utilising groups that band together and “storying” the effects that happen to the survivors and the group itself. Think TWD, Van Helsing or even iZombie in series or World War Z, the Resident Evil’s, Zombieland or even The Girl with all the Gifts (which has cordyceps at its centre) these are all “zombie” renditions. The thing about TLOU is that it does not sit within this genre… it is not about the apocalypse, the infected, the survival groups, the “cure” or the salvation of humanity… not at all. It is simply about Joel and Ellie. It is about their struggle, their loss, their “demons” and ultimately their choices… if you want to find a somewhat similar theme then go to “The Book of Eli” or “The Road” or even “The Mandalorian”. Then watch the series and see it through those eyes. You never know you may even see what I am seeing… 🙂

FINALLY!!!! A reactor that has the same perspective as me…i agreed with everything Joel did as well…and yes I understand his actions were selfish in nature considering he doomed the world of a potential cure and he lied to Ellie…but who gives a damn when your family is in danger? I noticed a-lot of people trying to take the moral high ground and act like they’re saints levitating in the sky lol like stop it, they know damn well if their daughter was in trouble, they would not only be ruthless like Joel in that hospital, but they would also lie to Ellie for the sake of preserving her mental health…if Joel told her the truth, i don’t think she would’ve been able carry such a heavy burden and properly process why Joel did what he did…shes already having survivors guilt towards Riley, Tess, Sam, & Henry which made her feel like her only remaining meaning of life was to get that cure out for the world, which Joel destroyed that possibility…if he told her that he destroyed her meaning of life, who knows what she might do or where her thoughts might go? That kind of truth is too much for a 14 year old to take on especially with all the heavy baggage she’s already burdening herself with.
