They actually work similar enough that severe alcohol withdrawal is treated with Benzodiazepines (the type of drug similar to what she takes). Benzos have an anti-anxiety effect and alcohol does too, it's pretty common for people with problem-drinking/alcoholism to also abuse Benzos or similar. I think it's a mix of alcohol being more of the same thing she was looking for with the pills. And a lot of what she does (including the chess to some extent) seems to at least partially be about feeling some sense of control (getting rid of anxiety can help with that) and escaping... from anxiety, not fitting into the world.. from her head.
