Full Reaction to Saving Private Ryan

Hello everyone!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: it's very hard to watch this movie without feeling uncomfortable or disturbed by some scenes.

Great representation of the harsh reality inside a warzone. But remember reality exceeds fiction 🙁

I hope you enjoy it! Stay safe 💖

My take - I think we all like to believe we would be like Captain Miller in this situation - but deep down we suspect we might actually be more like Upham. And so we hate him for that. Hopefully that thought is enough so if we're ever in the same situation, we will choose not to be Upham. For Captain Miller and the machine-gun position. The option was to go around and leave it for someone else to deal with. Sure there's a chance that maybe the next unit that came along would be alert and ready to deal with it... or maybe they would lose a lot more men. Capt Miller obviously didn't want that on his conscience. I think the point is that in war - there are no good decisions. A good example of what you mentioned about it's not just good guys vs bad guys is in the beginning. The two soldiers who are approaching the americans with their hands raised, and then the americans shoot them. Those men were actually speaking Czech, trying to explain that the Nazis had forced them to fight. The other thing about this movie - we - the world - are actually all James Ryan. Millions of strong, brave men and women give their lives and livelihoods so we could live in the world we have today. It's our duty and obligation to them to live it the best we can, and honour their sacrifice. PS - "massacre" is pronounced like "massa-ker" (I can hear you apologising already, but don't - your english is excellent).

Re Upham - the character is a coward and ill-suited for combat operations. He's a clerk, the most dramatic part of his day is when the typewriter runs out of ink and his "job" - what he's been trained to do - is administrative in nature, not combat. I think he exists in this story as a plot device to illustrate what can happen to someone thrown into the chaos of battle. He's terrified for most of it but at the end seems to find his resolve. If you want actual real characters then Band of Brothers is the series to watch - all based on true accounts and with some of the actual men of Easy Company introducing each episode and recounting their experiences.
