It baffles me that so many people are still hellbent on giving this movie a free pass when in reality nearly all the problems with this trilogy (and the other Di$ney movies in general) were established right here from the start: the utter lack of exposition between Episodes VI & VII, having too many plot points pivotal to the VII-IX happen off-screen between VI & VII (they half-heartedly tried to fix this via flashbacks, but that opened up another problem in that the flashback was a device that was never employed in any of the first 6 movies, thus, creating storytelling inconsistency within the saga), the virtually non-existent world-building, the general lack of evolution in technology despite the passage of 30 years, the lack of much of anything new in the way of spacecraft/weaponry/militia/planetary environments/etc. (mostly just more OT elements, albeit with a new coat of paint), Luke/Han/Leia (even R2) all doing things that run contrary to their previously established character arcs, R2/3PO/Chewie all having nothing to do but be there for fan service, alien/creature designs that look more as though they belong in a "Men in Black" movie or something (as well as the aliens in general - except for Maz - being banished strictly to the background), the more contemporary-sounding/almost Marvel-esque dialogue and humor (as opposed to the stylized '30s/'40s movie speak from the first 6 movies), fundamentally changing how both hyperspace and the Force work, the poorly-written and largely uncompelling new characters, all the painfully self-aware/virtually fourth wall-breaking winks to the OT, the reappearance/over-inflated importance of certain OT items that we really never should've seen again (Anakin's/Luke's old lightsaber, Vader's remains, whole chunks of the remains of the second Death Star which still somehow fully function, etc.)... the list goes on... How arrogant is it to claim you understand an IP better than its own creator?? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

The prequels got a lot of hate when they came out, but there now seems to be a lot of people (usually younger folks) who really connect with them. I didn't like them much when they came out, but I've come to enjoy them in a different way. It's possible in another few years people will feel the same way about the sequels, who knows. To me it always comes down to two things- The story, and how it was told. 4,5,6 had a great story, told really well. 1,2,3 had a good story, but failed a bit in how it was told. The sequels didn't really do either very well, at least for me.
