FULL LENGTH MAGNOLIA (1999) MOVIE REACTION

Goddamn...this movie. I don't even know where to start. I hope you read it, even though it might not be very coherent, because this movie just gets to me. It's in my top 10 favorite movies. And I'm so glad you finally got to watch this, there are not enough reactions to this movie. First...the way they chose to edit this movie...it's so fast paced and at the same time slow paced, really hard to explain. But the editing keeps you on the edge, it's frustrating sometimes, it's funny but it also gets you in the feels. Every actor is deliving a phenomenal performance. And besides the actors I have to single out the director Paul Thomas Anderson because that man has a gift. He always manages to get the best performances out of his actors. And when I say the best I really mean the best. So many of them give the best performance of their entire career in his movies. No matter if it's Daniel Day-Lewis in "There will be blood" and Paul Dano for the same movie. Or Joaquin Phoenix in "The Master". Even Adam Sandler in "Punch-drunk Love", Julianne Moore in this one and "Boogie Nights". And of course Tom Cruise...man what a performance. I have seen every performance he has ever given and this is my favorite. I love that man as an actor, and even though he has acted in a lot of dramatic roles - he's certainly not the first choice for a role like this. (Thanx to PTA again, for casting him). But when you watch it you realize that you need someone in that role with that kind of charisma, and only a few actors have that. He's just mesmerizing, everytime he's on screen you can't take your eyes of him. He manages to be ridiculously funny and then devastatingly sad later in the film. The scene with his father is an all-time acting scene for me. And it's even more impactful when you know that Tom Cruise experienced a similar scene with his dying father. I guess that really helped him delivering that kind of emotion. He actually made Philip Seymour Hoffman cry (R.I.P.) And then his opening monologue - he actually wrote a huge part of the scene himself. He has some of my favorite lines like "Respect the c*ck - and tame the c*nt!" That's just hilarious. But also lines like "What am I doing? I'm quietly judging you". The way his face subtly changes during the interview and you see the real Jack/ Frank Mackey. I always thought it was such an interesting choice that he let all his anger and frustration out on women. Considering the fact that the person he hated the most all his life was a man. If it was his mother that left him it would be more understandable. Not tolerable, but understandable. But it's not. And in that final moment he gets to let out all his anger at his father and at the same time he realizes that he doesn't want to lose his father - the same way he lost his mother! It's so conflicted. So much regret in this movie. But maybe after this moment he's able to choose a different career path. Tom Cruise was the only actor nominated for an Oscar for this movie. Best supporting actor - which is also interesting, because it's so rare to see him in a supporting role. He's usually the main star in every movie he makes. He was nominated and I'm still upset they didn't give it to him. Like...wtf. They gave it to Michael Caine for "The Cider House Rules"!? That's ridiculous. That man poured his heart and soul into that performance. By the way - I f*cking KNEW the "music video" would be your least favorite scene lol, I knew it. To me it was perfect. It's a strange choice but it worked for me, probably also because I love that song. And the scene always makes me cry. It fits perfectly into the movie, because it emphasizes how much they're all connected. Anyway...awesome that you watched it. It was my most anticipated reaction in a long time.
