“What’s with the Dada-ism Red?” I love this response of Spike’s :) Great line! Especially since it shows that Spike has been keeping up with the currents in art movements since he died and became a vamp, and not just popular music & culture like punk & tv. I always find it interesting whenever we get reference to a vamp in this universe not just being all the about the blood and violence.

Season 6 begins. A dark and engaging opening for the show. I love this episode. I think this season is also a quality season. One thing Buffy does extremely well that other shows do not is show us the reaction and real consequences. They had the guts to kill Buffy for 3 months instead of 1 day or 2. And make it a dangerous and difficult spell to achieve. Great reaction. I look forward to your further reactions.

Tiny thing: Willow first demonstrated telepathy in The Gift when she told Spike to charge up the tower to Dawn. Thought I'd say just in case that didn't register in the finale.

Liam, in case you've forgotten, in S1 'Nightmares', one of Buffy's fears that manifested was being buried alive. So yeah...this couldn't be more traumatizing for her. :(

Honestly, one of my favorite Dawn moments is her sneaking into Buffy's old room and cuddling up to the Buffy Bot. It's a small moment but there's something so human about yearning for comfort in familiarity when you're grieving. It's such a small moment, I know, but it's probably the most emotional part of the premiere for me.

This is one of my three favourite premieres of any Buffy season (well, the first half anyway), and I loved your thoughts on it. The BuffyBot's line in the pre-credits ("You want her to be exactly she'll never be exactly the only really real Buffy is really Buffy and she's gone who?") is a perfect example of BtVS's effortless blend of humour, darkness and chilling irony. Can't wait for the next part! I'm so hyped as this is one of my two favourite seasons of the show!

Just playing the devil's advocate here, but it would make sense that, with her being Dawn's mom and all, Joyce's mind would have to be altered the most. To give her as much as a new daughter the monks would've probably had to change her own sense of self. That could arguably apply to Buffy as well but I don't think that it would do so to such a large degree. That said, I agree with Liam (and probably you too!) that just making Joyce's death natural is a whole lot more effective dramatically.

Another point as to Tara being okay with doing the spell, remember that Tara has always been relatively timid. The only reason she was the dominant voice in their relationship early on is because she was the more experienced witch(also the more experienced with lesbian relationships) AND Willow herself is historically timid. It makes sense that over time, as Willow grew more powerful/confident, their dynamic would've switched, and Tara would've deferred to Willow more. Tara still acknowledged that despite Buffy's death being mystical, what they were doing is still defying the laws of nature. To me that says, hypothetically, had Buffy died earlier in Willow/Tara's relationship, Willow might've been unable to convince Tara to go along with the spell.

I love this episode, I love everyone's role in it. I love how almost everyone expressed their grief through the Buffybot in some way, great storytelling technique. Willow fixing Buffybot multiple times reflects her current stage of grief, bargaining. Willow is in fix it mode, which makes sense with her determination to do this spell. She tells the Buffybot, "I'll make you good as new... I promise." It's a small touch, but pretty sweet and interesting to me. "That'll put marzipan in your pie plate bingo!"

Oh this season..... The whole Joyce natural/created by the monks issue...I have actually thought about that a lot. I have come to this conclusion in my own mind. If the monks messing with everyone's memories aka their brains caused Joyce's issue, it didn't do the same thing to anyone else. I mean a lot of people's memories had to be altered, and Joyce seems to be the only one effected, if that is truly the case. So, it was Joyce's brain and its configuration alone that was effected by the meddling. That means it's that her brain had a natural proclivity to lean toward that, so in a way it was natural, in that her brain would naturally react that way...because if it was all mystical, then everyone would have been effected. Does that even make sense?

Oh! And Liam, you mentioned about Willow being all in white when she killed that fawn. I think it was supposed to be that way, almkst ritualistic? Like needing to be clean and pure, serene, to bring the innocent bambi forward? I think the fact shd needed its blood and its classed as a black margic dark ingredient is quite telling. Its almost as if she betrayed that fawn... *shivers sadly*

What a great opener. Honestly weird watching without the other half as I’m so used to it being one long thing, or back to back. I wasnt sure if it would end on the reveal or not haha! My random thought of the episode “how did I never notice how good Xander looks in this episode?!” I think it might be the most attractive I’ve seen him and after all these years today is the day I noticed 🤷🏼‍♀️ Seems like everyone got all pretty for season 6, cos I know Spike looks good - as usual haha! Anywhoooo how scary and awesome was that spell? And LOL at that stupid vampire - wearing a frickin’ HANSON tshirt 😂😂 so glad you enjoyed the episode, Liam. So excited for more. Its gonna be a ride!

OMG! Hi Liam - lil wave. Yup, I am still around, have not ceased to exist. I have actually been watching all your s5 reactions, and most of the Angel ones too - so sorry for not leaving any comments for ages! I've been really unwell, and my brain really frazzled, after watching a reaction I've either been too knackered to leave a comment or my brain just doesn't want to function properly. Which is a shame, cos s5 is one of my favourite seasons. I may go back and leave some comments if I find the time. I really enjoyed all your reactions and analysis - great as always.
