The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) - FULL REACTION

Comments

Since you enjoyed this so much, next time you have time for a new show on your watch schedule, you might want to think about watching the 2011-2015 series "Revenge"

I love this movie. I haven’t seen it in years. Thanks!

That was my first time seeing this film, and in fact I had never read the novel; I enjoyed it, happily. My natural attraction, it so happens, is also to movies and TV of the “genre” genres; that is, fantasy and sci-fi and the like. But I feel that the swashbuckling tales of adventure throughout film history are cousins of sorts to fantasy, when they're not plainly overlapping. In any event, I love a happy ending. As for your taking time to complete reaction requests, that’s okay; patience is a virtue. 😁👍🏻 Seriously, take your time! I don’t think we’re going anywhere.

As someone who just recently requested a film reaction I concur with Heidi. Don't burn out for us. Take care of yourself first and foremost. I don't want you to ever go through what Torchwood Boy did.

And by the way... please do not worry about having taken so long to react to this movie for me. I know how busy you are with life and just how many more shows you watch and reactions you make for all of us, including me. And now you're watching and reacting to movies too, which is amazing!! I promise you, I understand. Take all the time you need and please don't stress yourself out by trying to get these movies requested by us, watched and reacted to by any point of time. Just do what you can and when you can. Everyone should surely understand, as I do. Than you again! Sincerely, Heidi

Thank you very much for reacting to this movie for me, Liam!!! I am so, so happy that you liked this movie and Jim Caviezel's performance in it so much, as well as all the rest of the cast's performances too. I hoped you would. I absolutely love Jim Caviezel as an actor and I truly love time period piece movies like this because they're so beautiful, the settings are historical and gorgeous, and the stories are passionate and moving. I love the novel, The Count of Monte Cristo. It's one of my favorite novels of all time, so I was absolutely thrilled when I heard so many years ago, that they were making a movie out of it, and even happier that Jim Caviezel was going to be playing Edmond Dantes. I love Jim Caviezel in a number of movies and he has quickly risen up to be my favorite actor of all time. Edmond Dante’s is a good man, yet naive and at times, foolish for trusting in the wrong people who eventually come to steal his life away a little at a time. However, a priest within his prison helps to give him his strength back, as well as a purpose to go on living. Against Priest’s wishes, Edmond uses it to seek out revenge against each of those who took his life from him. And yet, through intricate plots and long suffering during his fight for revenge, Edmond at last enacts his justice on those who wronged him, yet didn’t kill any of his enemies until his former friend, who gave him no choice in the matter. Fernand refused to live in a world where Edmond was alive and happy, and therefore he forced Edmond’s hand. The long game Edmond plays as he seeks his revenge against Fernand, Dunglar, Chief Prosecutor Villfort, and even Mercedes until he discovered the truth about her reasons for marrying Fernand so quickly... phenomenal!!! I absolutely love this beautiful and intricate storyline. And the rest of the acting was phenomenal too. I mean... yes, Fernand Mondego, played by Guy Pearce, was definitely evil and creepy, which was no surprise to me, given that he's a villain in pretty much every movie I've ever seen with him. Fernand's pride and his jealousy became his downfall, long before he died in their duel at the end. And the end fight between him and Edmond was just so satisfying and amazing. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire duel, smiling from ear to ear. Also, I love Richard Harris as an actor too. And I love his character, the Priest and his relationship with Edmond throughout the time they spent within the Chateau 'dif. He was a brilliant actor in his lifetime, and I miss him very much now that he's long since passed on. Jacopo was played by Luis Guzman, who's in a ton of movies, though usually in even more minor roles than he plays in this movie. This is one of his biggest roles and I love him so much. He's so funny and his character definitely brings out the majority of the comedy shown in this movie too. But most of all, again I love his relationship with Edmond, as well as his devotion to protecting Edmond, even from himself, which he did. Phenomenal. Albert is played by Henry Cavil who is best known for playing Superman in the latest Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman movies, just as you quickly recognized. I don't care for these movies except for Wonder Woman which I really liked a lot, but I liked Henry Cavil as Superman, but I really love him a lot in The Count of Monte Cristo as Albert. He's a talented actor. And lastly... Mercedes is played by Dagmara Dominczyk. She's only ever guest starred in a few other shows I've seen and no other movies that I've seen, but I really love her role in this movie too. She quite beautiful and her acting is amazing. And as tragic as it is, I also love how Mercedes had been forced to marry Fernand because she had become pregnant with Edmond’s son. If she hadn’t, the people of Marseille would have shunned her and she would have been known to everyone as a harlot. And she didn’t deserve to be so, for loving a good man so terribly wronged and taken away from her. I love this overall twist and it was a twist I didn’t see coming. As for none of these characters recognizing Edmond when he came back into their lives as Monte Cristo... this movie took place in the time of Napoleon, when medicine was scarce and prisoners thrown away in cells such as shown in this movie typically died not long into their sentence, whether due to poor health, or suicide... as we saw Edmond attempt before he met Priest. Plus... everyone was told that Edmond was executed. So, of course no one would recognize him thirteen years later despite Monte Cristo's uncanny resemblance to Edmond's, even those closest to him. Mercedes did recognize him, but at times she kept seeing Monte Cristo as nothing more than a ghost coming to punish her for marrying Fernand so quickly after the man she truly loved was killed. Because Edmond being alive was a miracle she couldn't believe. No one could believe that he survived all those years trapped in that kind of Hell. And as for Edmond not knowing how to read, write, or swordfight... Again in those days, it was rare for anyone who was poor to have any kind of education or knowledge how to fight with a sword. Only the rich did unless the poor were fortunate to know someone who could teach them. Edmond and his family were extremely poor. That's why Fernand was so jealous. Because Fernand had wealth and power, yet not the love of a woman he coveted, or the happiness his poor friend had despite being poor. And lastly... another reason why I recommended this movie to you is because you watch Once Upon a Time, which is a show very near and dear to my heart. And in it my favorite character is Killian Jones/Captain Hook. Like I said earlier, The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my all time favorite classic novels, and this movie with Jim Caviezel is one of my favorite movies of all time too. Edmond Dantes is a very special character to me and after watching Once Upon a Time for many years now, I've come to see a lot of Edmond in Hook from Once Upon a Time. Hook has spent centuries seeking revenge against Rumplestiltskin for wronging him after he not only cut off and stole his hand, but also ripped out his love's heart and crushed it in front of him as we saw back in season two's episode, The Crocodile. However, Hook eventually comes to meet Emma, who has helped Hook to find peace as he's slowly begun to change for the better over time, to the point so far within the show that you've come to. We've seen there's good in Hook that is fighting to break out beneath the darkness within the villain he still is. Now... Hook and Edmond are different characters and the circumstances within their lives are very different, but they are both men who have sought out revenge and allowed their hate to consume them, until those closest to them have helped pull them out of the darkness. Edmond found peace and God in his life again, and again found the happiness that was ripped away from him. As for Hook... well, you will just have to keep watching Once Upon a Time, and I can't wait for more! :) I just love the similarities between two of my all time favorite characters. I hope all of this makes sense to you. :) Thank you once again for reacting to The Count of Monte Cristo for me! You keep thanking me for my continued support, but I want to thank you for continuing to watch and enjoy the shows and movies I love so much! It means a lot to me to be able to watch all of your fun reactions. Thank you truly, Liam. :) Sincerely, Heidi

Great reaction! You should check out the 1998 Mini-Series with Gérard Depardieu.
