Angel - 2x05 “Dear Boy” FULL REACTION

My gosh... I'm hoping you're ready for Angel 2 X 07! Can't wait to see your reaction on that one after watching this.

I LOVE this episode. The bit with Drusilla breaks my heart every time, and it's so fascinating to watch Angel and Darla interact... the mean-yet-familiar teasing, sexual tension, and anger really makes them feel like exes who were together for a long time and had a messy breakup. Which is exactly what they are! But I think it's a dynamic that a lot of shows fail at. I just love Darla so much, and I love seeing Angel-with-a-soul pushed to his limits enough that he's tapping in to who he used to be. Scary but makes for good television.

I never thought about the fact that Angel was Catholic, he's Irish so of course he was. Like he probably wasn't very devout when he was Liam, but that partially explains his preoccupation with nuns and convents, the other reason being that they embody purity, which Angelus gets off on perverting. It also explains why Angel is so damn guilty all the time (I'm mostly joking, it's just kinda ironic).

“And what a poster boy for soulfulness you are.” That gets right to the heart of it. The Buffyverse has given us ample evidence that merely having a soul doesn’t make you good. What about a vampire who, as a human wasn’t the poster boy for soulfulness, gets his soul back? We know that Angel wasn’t actively doing good until Whistler brought him to Buffy. We know that Angel’s soul is cursed, and that torment constantly at odds with his demon doesn’t automatically make Angel heroic, or even a pleasant person to be around most of the time. I love this episode. It’s so complicated, layered, and it builds on every episode so far this season. What are the lines between good and evil and the role of control — especially when it comes to Angel. In BtVS "Lie to Me," Angel described what he did to Drusilla and said that she was the worst thing he did as Angelus, but seeing it happen is absolute horror and tragedy. Poor Drusilla. No wonder why Angel offered her and Spike the chance to leave in BtVS S2. It's interesting that Darla was a puppetmaster to Angelus, but he took her ideas and turned them into masterpieces of sadistic torment, which both delighted and disturbed her. Who knew that the Darla of BtVS was such a fascinating character? Julie Benz is extraordinary, and the chemistry between her and DB is sizzling. Speaking of sizzling, I love the mirror to Buffy's cross burning into Angel's chest when they tenderly kissed goodbye after Angel killed Darla for her in “Angel.” Here, Darla uses the cross to deliberately taunt him while Angel has her by the throat: "No matter how good a boy you are, God doesn't want you. But I still do." What a fabulous line for Catholic boy Angel. Marti Noxon wrote the Angel/Darla scenes, and she gets how complicated and twisted their relationship is. Buffy represented salvation to Angel, his capacity for goodness. Darla represents the opposite: her seduction of Angel’s innate darkness. The way Julie Benz staggers and scoffs but with a quivering, insulted voice, “But that…that cheerleader did?” That this climactic scene takes place in a former convent in which the sacred and cursed intersect is brilliant (and a gorgeous location). Darla running into the light, dressed in shades of blue that Buffy wears (also Virgin Mary), was the icing on the cake.

I love Angelus comment about how Darla killed the streetwalker. That is really the tragedy of vampires. Say you are bullied at high school. Someone turns you into a vampire. Now you can eat those that bullied you, but as a demon, you will also eat your friends, who were also bullied.

Kudos to Juliette Landau who has now played Human Drusilla, Crazy Human Drusilla, Crazy Vampire Drusilla and Crazy Sick Vampire Drusilla. They are all slightly different but still have Drusilla at the core. The conversation between Angel and Darla is great, IMO. Angel thinks Darla having her soul back should lead to guilt even though it's been several weeks since she returned and Darla thinks that what they did as vampires was the stuff of happiness. One thing that she brings up is the notion that Angel doesn't need Angelus to do evil things. Darla reminds him of what he was like as a human and says being evil is his natural way.

I think you must be talking about the Orb of Thesulah. The magic shop keeper in Passion told Jenny that he sold some as paperweights to some "new agers". Then, in Becoming I, it turned out that Giles was one of the "new agers" the shop keeper was talking about, using his orb as a paperweight.

I like everyone major players thus far were in this episode especially seeing Kate Gunn Wesley Cordy interact in one room is so good to watch. The chemistry between Kate and Gunn was awesome in the rap sheet vs cop stuff. I'm very happy not one reactor has put together something from Passions episode and Becoming Part 1 episode that I caught long ago. It's very very small hidden detail in a pass sentence statement a minor character said in Passion but we get to see the end of that sentence carried through by Giles subtle carry through from that one sentence. When I noticed it, it was wow cool moment. I only mention this here now cause I'm watching old reactions from Buffy and I watched every reactor again to confirm they didn't catch it. 😂🔮 anyone care to solve it.
