Angel - 2x03 “First Impressions” FULL REACTION

Comments

God, I love it when the jolly green demon sings.

I learned from POTN last night that "First Impressions" was the working title for Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice. " They have referenced her work before in "Sense and Sensitivity," so maybe there is an inspiration.

Omg, Angel is dreaming that the karaoke demon is complimenting his singing. Aww. I hope it’s true that Angel has been practicing in the shower, and that he’s giving himself dream therapy. Please let that be true. So we’ve had “Judgment,” “Or You now Or Have You Ever Been?,” and now “First Impressions.” I’m sensing a theme here maybe. This is a great Cordy and Gunn episode. It almost plays like a romantic comedy, Jane Austen style with the clash of class, pride/arrogance, and judgment on both sides. Cordelia is so heroic and brave yet still has so much white privilege. Gunn is loyal and protective, but Cordelia is right, he courts danger. Gunn crying in the hospital and letting “Alonna” slip broke my heart. I wish they had a black writer on staff, though, because some the writing is cringey. Nevertheless, it’s very cool to see Cordelia step into Angel’s role and save someone’s soul. Gunn is certainly not killing people, but there are echoes of Angel’s talk to Faith in “Consequences” about trusting people and letting them help you stay away from the darkness. Wesley and Angel are adorable. When Wesley refused Angel’s offer to help him up, was that an implication that he thought Angel was masturbating? Because Darla had just been there, right? Anyway, it felt highlighted because later they focused on Gunn readily accepting Angel’s hand. “Hop on, gorgeous.” “Who doesn’t like Denzel?” Darla and Angel have so much chemistry. It’s complex and sexy and so creepy. That moonbathing scene was hilarious and gorgeous. Darla is isolating Angel from his friends and his mission. WTF was that with Wesley and the coffin? I love them but DARLA NO YOU CAN’T DO THAT BECAUSE IT’S WRONG.

I so second that. Season 4 is my absolute favorite season of Angel and I’ll fucking stand by it!

Angel expressed that when he was enraged by his powerless against Wolfram & Hart in "Blind Date": “It's still their world, Wesley. Structured for power, not truth. It's their system, and it's one that works. It works because there's no guilt there's no torment, no consequences. It's pure. I remember what that was like. Sometimes I miss that clarity.” Angel got a look when he got to the part about no guilt, no torment, no consequences. DB played that perfectly. Angel walks a fine line every day.

Liam, don’t let anyone tell you seasons 3 and 4 of Angel aren’t great. 2,3,4 and 5 are all awesome. Also, based just on this episode, I kind of ship Angel and Darla. He just seemed so very happy.

Richard Lucas

YES! I mean, not to shit on Buffy (because they get things right in other categories), but Sunny Dale is super white for a supposed town in southern California. Angel really steps up the bar and actually shows how diverse LA is. And even more impressive, their willingness to discuss racial issues beyond just mentioning a persons skin color is something I'll always praise ATS for.

Abby

I always sorta forget what happens in this episode when I see it come up, but I remember the character moments in their like overall arc. I love that Wesley got to be the cool one out of him and Angel. One thing I appreciate about Angel more than Buffy is their more open willingness to talk about things like race and class. And how a character like Cordelia, who grew up rich in white suburban Sunnydale, would assume people at that party were criminals, or that Gunn knows how to hotwire a car. I'm glad they didn't just gloss over that sort of inevitable character trait, even though it isn't pretty or endearing. And that Gunn called her out on it or at least gave her an incredulous look every time.

KT

I find it interesting that Angel's vision of Darla is affected by his soul. He does not miss the violence and mayhem. He misses the serenity of not experiencing guilt, doubt and shame.

Moon Logic

Well it was something like 7:30 AM but I see no reason why that should rule out watching a Liam Duke Angel reaction.

You think Buffyverse Angelverse stopped breaking windows, non spoiler because it's just about windows but wait till you see the bill for window replacement in the next episode.
