You asked, “Who is Book?” This isn’t a spoiler, it’s just my head canon but he fits into a similar character type as Iroh in The Last Airbender. The general who is sick of the horror of war and turns to spirituality to find redemption. If we think about him as someone on a religious journey he started by rejecting the world and hiding in the Abbey but that didn’t work so now he is on a pilgrimage, travelling with the people he once fought against. He and Mal are both on opposite arcs. Mal started off religious, fighting for independence and that is where Book needs to end up. They both need to forgive each other and recognise each other as their shadow self.

I used to skip this episode in watch-throughs. I thought it slowed the pacing, especially coming right before Objects in Space. But, now it's in my top 3. It's actually pretty brilliantly written if you think about Rance and Nandi being two opposing embodiments of Mal's own self (he even likens himself to both of them at different points) and the positive and negative sides of the liberty he fights so hard to attain. Also, RE: Your outro. I wouldn't say the movie "wraps things up how it was originally intended," since there were A LOT of open threads and implicit promises of future storylines (as you mentioned, and even more planned / hinted at), but they do what they can with the run time. Just to set expectations. 😅

Something I didn't notice until I saw somebody else point it out, is that Jayne is on his BEST behavior in this episode of the entire series. He actually "dresses up" when they first arrive at the brothel, wearing a button-down long-sleeve shirt that he never wore before that we see. He shows more of an honest respect for the prostitutes than he does to Mal (his captain) or Inara (the high-class woman). That shines a BIG light on him. That light doesn't illuminate everything, but it's a brighter light than we've ever had before. Fun tidbit, the shadow play that is being perfomed at the theater when Mal meets Rance Burgess is actually telling the worldbuilding background of 'Earth that Was' and humanity leaving to settle the current system.

Regarding Inara's reason for leaving, you must understand "Companions". It is her way of life, how she was brought up and her purpose that gives her life meaning. She knows that having a relationship with Mal would most likely cause her to end the current path that she is on, knowing Mal's views of her lifestyle. FYI here's a quote from "The Firefly and Serenity Database": Inara Serra explaining how much study it takes to become a Companion: "On Sihnon, we started training at twelve, years of discipline and preparation before the physical act of pleasure was even mentioned. Control was the first lesson, and the last."

Not only was the series cancelled, it was cancelled before they completed shooting the first season, which is so many plot lines are left hanging.

Yeah so FOX aired the episodes out of order (including airing three of the episodes a year later on the SciFi channel) and then acted shocked that ratings werent great and so they cancelled it; so the final episode was not written with it being the series finale in mind.

Yay! Can't wait to watch!
