This movie really truly encapsulates how foreign, strange, alone you feel in Japan. I was gonna nominate the "Before Trilogy" for both romance and your "lingering in the moment" shots, but I see you've seen them all. Lucky for you, unlucky for us.

So now you need to watch Her, written and directed by Sofia Coppola's ex husband Spike Jonze. It feels somewhat like a counterpart to this movie. And it also coincidentally stars Scarlett Johansson.

This was a first time watch for me too, and I'm struck by how emotional it made me, for reasons I can't quite put my finger on; it took me a second to realise I was tearing up at the ending. There's such a sense of melancholy and nostalgia throughout the whole film, and the relationship between Bill and ScarJo is so powerful and evocative. I love the ambiguity of the ending - what did he say to her? It doesn't matter. It's the culmination of their connection, neither purely platonic or romantic, but somewhere in between. I'm glad it seemed to bring them both peace, no matter where either of them choose to go from there. I've obviously heard of this film for years, and I'm glad I finally watched it, it was pretty beautiful ❤️

This is my favorite film. I'm 62 years old, so I can definitely relate to Bill Murray's character. I love the fact that the film didn't do the clichè thing of making their relationship sexual, but instead kept it as an emotional connection. She is at the beginning of the prime years of her life, while he as at the tail end of his, and that is what forms their attraction for each other Consider the scene where she sees the women doing the flower arranging. It shows her uncertainty, while she sees the women around her being confident in what they are doing. That's what she wants. Now think about the scene when he tucks her into bed and she smiles up at him, then closes her eyes and goes to sleep. He nods and then quietly leaves the room. That illustrates his recognition that the time when he could hook up with someone like her is in the past. She is attracted to his wisdom and experience, while he is attracted to her youth and energy, feeling a nostalgia for his past. They both see in each other what they want in themselves. Great reaction. I love reactions to quieter, thoughtful movies like this rather than to yet another blockbuster. P.S. The woman who came to his hotel room to give him a massage was not trying to frame him. She was a sex worker, and the "premium fantasy" she was offering was role-playing non-consensual sex, with her playing the role of the innocent helpless woman that he could "force" into sex. Obviously he wasn't interested, which indicates that, despite his marital problems, he wasn't wanting to cheat on his wife.

Omg! Lost In Translation is legit one of my top 10 favorite movies ever. I've loved it ever since I saw it in the theaters when it came out and it still holds up amazing today. Hopefully you like it!
