Also, Cass, major tangent off what was obviously a casual aside remark, but please do not watch "Ancient Aliens". It's a bad show, and not just in the sense "lol this show is so lame", it is actually harmful. At its best it grossly misrepresents historical fact, and at its worst it straight-up lies about real-life people and cultures. Almost always non-white cultures and history as well, so everything has a layer of racism on top of the blatant inaccuracy. I'm not denying that there are some fascinating mysteries about there, and numerous unexplained areas of history, but real historians have spent time on them and don't need to make things up to make them interesting. Who were the "Sea Peoples"? Why did the Sumerian language die out with no language family offshoots? What were the origins of the Huns, and what relation -- if any -- did they have with the Xiongnu? What did the bull leaping represent in Minoan art? These all have competing theories with dozens of explanations, and there are plenty of good (and entertaining) classes or even documentaries on them. I'm not even denying that there could have been aliens involved somewhere. But I am denying that they were ever there where "Ancient Aliens" says they were, because they're always just lying.

Normally I watch the YouTube edits for movies because I just don't have the time to set aside a two-hour block, but for this one I wanted to re-experience the entire movie with you. This is a movie MADE for re-watching. You will notice SO MANY things from the start of the movie that you either didn't notice, or didn't understand without greater context (For example, when you see OJ with his father at the beginning, a radio news broadcast is talking about how hikers are mysteriously missing, and then you can hear Jean Jacket flying overhead with the people screaming faintly). I have so many theories as to Meaning and Backstory, but everybody will be throwing those at you, so I'll stick with just Ricky Park, "Jupiter". His entire story is him trying to rationalize what happened to him as a child and imbue it with some sort of Meaning. If it was just an animal attack that he happened to survive by random chance, then it could just as easily have gone the other way and wound up with him dead or disfigured for life like his co-stars. But if Gordy spared him because he is special, or because they have a connection, then there's MEANING to it. Him latching on to that vertical shoe is again him looking for meaning, and taking it as a literal sign, instead of just accepting that sometimes things fall in weird positions (Maybe there's something behind the shoe that we don't see propping it up. Maybe it has a flat heel to support a particular show effect. Maybe ANYTHING). So now that he's an adult, he's still looking for meaning. The aliens that he designed for his theme park are actually shaped like the film cameras used for his show (You see them as stuffed animals for sale in the park). When he recognizes that Jean Jacket keeps appearing at a regular time and place he crafts a story about him being chosen by aliens for first contact. He even tells the audience at the Star Lasso experience that if The Viewers (Again, harking back to his TV experience and the audience) weren't CHOOSING to spare him, then they'd all be dead. He doesn't want to accept that he's just been feeding a wild animal and it keeps showing up for more food, because again, if that's the case then everything else is meaningless as well.

This gave me a reason to finally watch this movie! I very much enjoyed watching it while having your commentary on another screen. Did NOT expect to see the inner workings of the creature, what an absolute nightmare

The ape connects thematically, I think. Jupe had been feeding horses to Jean Jacket for weeks upon weeks, and in doing so, believed he had a bond with it just like he thought he had a bond with Gordy that allowed him to live as a child... not realizing it was because Gordy couldn't look him in the eyes past the tablecloth. Much as he thought he had a connection, at the end of the day, they were both wild animals and their 'rules' were broken.
