Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 7x10 Full Reaction

I have so much respect for Juliet Landau's portrayal in this season. It is so much like Drusilla, but just a tiny bit "off"

Yeah, We were all where you are. It's why we enjoy watching people react to the show, seeing them go through the same confusion/doubt/worry that we did.

Rod B

Buffy also called it a he during the episode.

Props to the writers for getting Joyce on screen before the opening credits spoil the surprise, like so often happens in this show.

What is strange for a villain is that the First keep saying it doesn't want to win. Or that winning an losing is not the point. How does that fit into a good v evil story, where there is something else the First is trying to do. It uses deception, twisting the truth, and an army of willing monsters and followers, as well I guess necromancy (or possession of an undead body?) at least with Spike. Being noncorporeal, it has to send minions to do its work. Perhaps it has a plan to become solid, like the Master had a plan to escape the underground prison, Acathla to escape being turned to stone, Adam to break his limitations, Glory to escape her human prison. Buffy escaped death itself. The Slayer line is to be eliminated for some evil reason beyond just getting Buffy and future Slayers out of the way. It is after Buffy in particular, because she beat death, I think. Perhaps she thinks if she forces Buffy to kill Spike it will corrupt her, turn her dark. Last season she was in trouble, because she was traumatized and losing hope, but she was never dark like Faith was. Faith was rescued by Angel, and actually by Buffy defeating her, or she would have died fighting for the mayor, maybe. But if Buffy has to watch everyone die, including Spike & Dawn, and Giles, she will turn dark and without anyone she will fly headlong into making a fatal mistake. What would the First want to do if not win against Good? Just score points against the Powers That Be, or usher in a new age of Hell with a capital H on Earth (it definitely wants to open the Hellmouth). I'm just saying think about what happens if Buffy loses. Others will show up to fight, there seem to be an endless supply of heroes willing to test their mettle against the forces of darkness, the vampires, the demons. Just like Season 3, Buffy is gathering an army, maybe the First just wants some kind of last stand type of thing.

Just heard that the pilot episode of the Buffy reboot had its table read on Jul 21. Yay!

I completely agree with almost everything you said in this episode. But for me, the reaction from Giles during the final speech isn't a look of distress but rather a look of admiration. I think he is finally seeing Buffy for the leader he always believed she could be. Doesn't relate to the rest of your thoughts on Giles so I shall leave it at that

You kept calling the First “him” but it a force not male or female and no physical form so be on the lookout for any touching if you’re looking for who’s real , I never understood why Annabelle took of even though she was all “ control your fear” I guess it was a front she put on and she really was scared who could blame her. Spike has the best character arc on the show from how he was introduced until season 7

My favorite moment was when you quietly muttered "fuck" when Buffy's stake did nothing to the turok-han. Just the perfect reaction. After getting two home runs with Americans putting on British accents with Spike and Wesley, we get the strike outs: The English Potentials have INFAMOUSLY bad fake accents. Almost as bad as Angel's Irish accent. We don't know why, but the First is REALLY focused on having a super badass vampire on its side. Or at least not opposing it. In season three it tried to get Angel to feed on Buffy and turn evil again, but then settled on having Angel kill himself. It's doing the same plan again now with Spike and messing with his mind. It seems to really specifically not want vampires of their caliber working on the side of Good.

There is a bit of an odd continuity moment with Dawn's hair. In the scene in the house she is wearing a purple top and straight brown hair, then they go off to the school basement and everyone else is the same but Dawn seems to have found time to change outfits and give herself some blonde highlights and curls, i guess Dawn was like i need to change and do my hair before going to school, and everyone else was just sitting round waiting and playing charades or something.

Dream(/First?) Joyce's conversation with Buffy is very reminiscent of what drove Angel into an existential spin in Season 2 on his show; no matter what we do, evil has and will always exist, and all of us have some capacity within us. As Holland Manners told Angel in the elevator ride in "Reprise": "If there wasn't evil in every single one of them out there, they wouldn't be people... they'd all be angels." However, Angel was able to reconcile this realisation with his philosophy: "If there's no great glorious end to all this; if nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do...Because, if there's no bigger meaning, then the smallest act of kindness is the greatest thing in the world." And that's how we fight evil everyday.

You wondering about Giles is not annoying, there was much discussions on the subject on internet forums back in the days.

I always read that Willow saying "you're just making me stronger" was her (her as in actually Willow) fighting through the possession and telling her to get back. If you think about the meditation Willow was doing to heal her wounds when she returned to Sunnydale, Buffy's power and presence were something she could utilise.

That was a look in early 2000s, I fear 😔

I love how much you're loving this season so far. It's one of my favorites (though my number one will always be a tie between seasons 2 and 5). The last season had a dark tone because of character driven scenarios, many of which were realistic even though they were still set within a supernatural background. This season has a dark feel because of the mystery behind the big bad. I think you're reaction to Giles' presence was natural and probably what the writers were going for. We haven't gotten confirmation either way about whether it really is him or another manifestation of the First. Could be either one. I love Buffy's speech at the end. She was beaten, but not utterly defeated. Already she's ready to fight back.

i too think this season's big bad is a great idea. we have evil itself going after not only the two current slayers, but the entire line, and if it succeeds in eliminating all the potentials and slayers then it's the end, there will be no one powerful enough to protect the world. and for the first time ever the scooby gang is actually struggling to fight this thing. i mean in previous seasons no matter how bad things got we at least had the resources to avert apocalypses. now the council is gone and watchers and trained potentials all over the world are being killed, the turok-han is stronger than buffy, spike has been kidnapped, faith is in prison, tara is dead, and willow still can't fully use her power. it really gives off "final battle" vibes.

Cass your reactions are fun. I have never noticed that Dawn's hair is … weird in that basement scene but now that you mention it, Dawn's hair is … weird, curly and crinkled and straight!

The Testimony of Mushroom

Tucker's brother really just be there, vibing in a chair.

I can never get over Dru/JL's arms. Girl is like, "Sun's out, guns out." Well, not actually because, well, vampire. But you get my point.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

That's fair though to distrust Giles and they did say the First is non corporeal so it can't touch anything. Did you see Giles touch anything?
