It’s been a long time since I’ve seen this episode… totally forgot about it and I really enjoyed watching it this time.

Martin Gardner

Hardly ever hear C drop that hard f-bomb like that.

In the flashbacks Angel and Darla describe a scene that we saw in season 2 episode 9 The trial when they were being chased, hid in a barn and Darla rode off without Angel. They already mention Holtz in this early season 2 episode. You really have to give it up for the writers for the long term vision

It is a good thing that Angel is able to move on after Buffy's death, but, really, his feeling bad because he doesn't feel bad is THE Most Angel Thing Ever. πŸ™„ Fortunately, Cordy understands this, too.

Very fun reaction! Welcome to Angel Season 3. Also, love a good flashback episode.

This episode aired Sep 24, 2001. It had been 13 days since the 911 attacks, and America was still shocked, living in fear, waiting for more bad news, like for real everyone thought that the mall or the movie theater or the subway could blow up, or more planes would be hijacked. You had to wait in line to get your one packet of toilet paper, and the shelves were empty of bottled water, soldiers with machine guns at the airport, metal detectors going up at school, bomb threats, fights erupting at town meetings. Sitting down watching TV was a different experience, the shows would get interrupted by news flashes and government press conferences, etc. TV commercials would have news promos showing the towers burning and people covered in cement dust and scenes of the rubble in New York, stacks of black and white body bags. There was daily talk of war, but most people did not know who or where we were going to go to war with. The airwaves were full of the pictures and names of the dead. So we were all dealing with death right then. Big death -- big feelings, confusion, anger, loss, fear for the future. I remember crying with relief at seeing my Angel friends back on the screen, caring for each other, talking through their trauma, working back into being human. Humanity seemed hard to come by, but here it was in my show. Later that year you couldn't get away from the war, the insanity, the paranoia of that time, but for short times at a Barnes & Noble coffee shop with a good read, or at night after the news when Buffy or Angel came on. They were on different networks now, Angel on Monday at 9:00pm after 7th Heaven, Buffy on Tuesday, at 8:00pm. Angel on the WB was competing with NBC Monday Night Football, so was killed in the ratings -- they repeated it on Sunday night if you missed it to try to give people the chance to see it. Buffy On UPN had to fight with Gilmore Girls on the WB at the same time slot, but they repeated it at 9:00 pm on Wednesday. Unfortunately that was when The West Wing, Big Brother, and The Amazing Race all aired, so it didn't really help too much in the ratings, but I guess sold commercials. UPN was new and tiny and didn't have a lot of anchor shows other than Gilmore Girls, Buffy, Angel, Smallvile, and Star Trek Enterprise. They only had nighttime network programming Mon-Fri. Anyway that was how it was.

I love the little trick they did by putting Darla in the flashback. After seeing Julie Benz's name in the credits you know she's appearing somewhere in the episode, but then you see her in the past and you think "Ah, there it is, we're done now". So when you see her AGAIN at the end in the present it's still a surprise. I think that Angel being okay is building off of his character development in season two where he is reforging emotional connections with people and the world around them. And when people have connections to the world around them, they survive and recover from trauma. People suffer painful losses throughout their lives -- loved ones die from illness and accidents and violence -- and most people continue on despite that. They grieve, and the hurt never goes away, but it's not the end of the world. That was Cordelia's direct point at the end: Angel's reaction is normal. It's HEALTHY. This is how real people deal with loss. It's the people who refuse to accept it and move on that aren't "really" in love. They're just so obsessed and codependent that they think it's love. James didn't love Elizabeth more than Angel loved Buffy, he just just didn't have anything else in his life that he loved at ALL. And James didn't go to the doctor for assisted suicide, he went there for the temporary immortality. He wanted "the cure" so he could get his revenge on Angel. He was just willing to accept the death as well, because in his obsession he didn't see any reason to keep living after getting his revenge. For any vampires that just want to kill themselves, they can stake themselves or walk into the sun whenever they want, they don't need outside help.

Your reaction to the ending was hilarious πŸ˜‚. Darla neatly repeats the line: 'life's full of surprises' both in the flashback and at the end of the episode. Holtz was actually first mentioned back in season 2. Specifically, in the flashback where Darla abandons Angelus in the burning barn! I really appreciate the talk between Cordelia and Angel at the end; that Angel carrying on his mission is honouring Buffy's memory. This is a wonderful sentiment because it was Buffy who first inspires Angel's mission in Amends: 'Strong is fighting. It's hard and it's painful and it's every day. It's what we have to do... Angel, you have the power to do real good, to make amends.'

Excellent reaction to that last scene, I've been waiting for it

Wesley in the scene with Merl - he has clearly gotten a little more confident, a little more hard-ass... and I'm here for it. <3 And Lorne - my favorite Angel character. I love him so much, and his voice is exquisite! And I love the moment when Fred comes out of her room, finally - and Angel is like "Go back to your room and stay there!" LOL I'M DYING I'm glad you picked up on something that seems to be a fact of the Buffyverse that is slowly revealed over time: the beginning spiel about how vampires are nothing like the person they were before, just a soulless demon incapable of love - that's not necessarily true. OF COURSE it's what they would teach the Slayer, to make it easier to do what she has to do. But we see examples throughout the show of what is at least EXCEPTIONS to this. Some vampires are definitely capable of love. I feel like it's more like losing your conscience, but not your emotions. Spike is a good example. <3

I died at the Buffy reincarnation comment lmao
