Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 5x2 Full Reaction

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 5x2 Full Reaction

Comments

curds and whey is a reference to little miss muffet

Sam Monnett

The sister has been mentioned. She has actually been foreshadowed over multiple seasons. In dream sequences. I love This show. It's brilliant.

Aaron Price

Thereโ€™s moments in the earlier seasons like 1 or 2 where Buffy says or someone says Buffy is an only child so no she did not always have a sister, but she does now. Itโ€™s honestly like the best season as far as writing goes.

Natalie Padilla

Footage is included in the edited YouTube versions! For other visual media (movie/tv) sheโ€™s back to and sticking with the watchalong format!

CoreyIsSus

Ever gonna go back to reacting where we can watch it with you? Not a fan of this ๐Ÿ™

Michael Smith

A little character moment in this episode I always enjoy: When Willow asks Tara who is making her feel unwelcome and immediately says "Is it Xander? It's Xander, isn't it!" As much as she loves Xander, Willow instantly assumes that he's done something stupid/inappropriate. I also love that Tara (being Tara๐Ÿฅฐ) immediately responds "Xander's a sweetie!"

DanielOrme

'Slayer at last we meet.' 'We've met Harmony, you halfwit.' ๐Ÿ˜‚ So many great lines in this episode. David Fury is one of my favourite Buffy/Angel writers. I loved your excitement at the prospect of having the magic shop as the new scooby gathering place. Harmony's love of unicorns is whimsically on point ๐Ÿ˜‚. I adore that she has a cute little collection of them!

Watching reactors when they get to this episode is the most entertaining and frustrating experience, especially when you have a reactor like Cass who likes to theorize and speculate. At various points I want to say either "yes, stay on that track" or "no, you're misreading that completely," but I can't say anything. If it's any consolation, at the time this first aired my online Buffy friends and I came up with plenty of theories and none of us got it right. Also, I don't think I've seen any reactor get it right, either.

DanielOrme

Not every. I like him still at this point. I won't say if it stays that way so as not to spoil expectations.

Dave Hampton

I love the age-old Buffy tradition of gaslighting new viewers about Dawn. It's a rite of passage.

Raymond Simon

The mystery continues, and we have lots of characters now. Buffy, Willow, Xander, Giles, Spike, now Riley, Tara, Dawn, Anya, and of course Joyce. Even Harmony makes a comeback. The Magic Box has been around for several seasons, but under different names -- It used to be "Uncle Bob's Magic Cabinet", but Spike killed a woman working there. Willow would get stuff from there occasionally, even Xander got some ingredients for spells there. Buffy, Spike, and Angel fought the Mayor's Vamp Gang there, pretty much trashing the place in the process. Buffy went there to get some things for Giles when Willow accidentally made him temporarily blind.

spikeysnack

You comparing Dawn's sudden and normalized presence to the episode Superstar is interesting! Superstar is such a random episode in the context of season 4, but with Dawn now here, it reads more like laying foundations...

Mornir

You wanted answers about Dawn?? No answers for you (he he he).

Rod Bate

Comments like this are usually unwanted by reactors, I don't know exactly where she stands on that, but it's probably just better to watch the show and make her own connections.

Sophia Connolly

New found slayer thing- Joyce means her taking it serious again asking Giles to be her watcher again.

You don't remember when Dawn snuck a sip of Joyce's schnapps's in Dead Man's Party?

Jason Harrelson

I like that youโ€™ve officially moved onto the same stage as every Buffy fan: disliking Riley.

Jorgalorg

And now for the gaslighting portion of my commentary: Cass....what do you mean you don't know that Dawn has always been here? You yourself said trust the show. The show said in this episode that it's always been this way. That Dawn grew up with Buffy in her house. BUFFY said that Dawn has always been here. ....Would Buffy lie? Yes, I know, there was some weird, creepy man outside the magic shop who said that Dawn didn't belong here. But who are you going to believe? Weird creepy man? Or Buffy? Not to mention almost every villain from the Master, to Angelus, to Faith and the Mayor, have all kidnapped Dawn and one point. Adam also tried kidnapping Dawn, but as many will recall, Dawn just began cracking up when she saw what Adam looked like, and Adam just walked away stoically saying, "That was very interesting." *GASLIGHT* *GASLIGHT* *GASLIGHT* *Tells many more stories about how Dawn was in previous episodes* Okay, I'm done. Now that that's out of the way, enjoy the rest of season 5! PS. No gas was actually lit or in any other way harmed throughout the duration of this comment.

Steve Quast

I have to admit, it's always fun watching reactors going through the beginning of season 5, constantly asking questions and trying to figure things out. And I have to say your theories are very interesting. I won't say whether any of them are right or wrong, but definitely interesting. One reason I like you as a reactor is you're good at trying to analyze things even when you're not sure what's going on.

Steve Quast

Yes! I was actively angry as I recall.

Amiee Stahlman

Same.

Steve Quast

Commenting during the intro to say props to the boyfriend for the obligatory end of Buffy 5x1 gaslighting.

Dave Hampton

you could rewatch the dream sequences with Faith in 3.22 and 4.15 for more or less subtle foreshadowing of Dawn's arrival. also Tara tells Buffy in 4.22 "Be back before Dawn"

madfem

"I told mom one time I wish they'd teach me some of the things they do together, and then she got really quiet and made me go upstairs"... I can just hear Joyce's mind saying "Great, one more thing I have to deal with..."

Michael Labs

Season 3 finale Faith in their shared dream while she was in a comaโ€ฆ.. โ€œlittle miss Muffet counting down to 730โ€โ€ฆโ€ฆ

Vicky N

"I told mom one time I wish they'd teach me some of the things they do together, and then she got really quiet and made me go upstairs" makes me LOL every time. :-)

Michael Hoffmann

Curds and Whey is mentioned in a 19th century nursery rhyme: "Little Miss Muffet Sat on a tuffet, Eating her curds and whey; There came a big spider, Who sat down beside her And frightened Miss Muffet away." Leaving warm milk for a while will cause it to separate into solid curds and liquid whey. Adding acids or other things can speed up the process. Its kind of gross but without refrigeration you can make extra milk into a snack or use the curds as the first step in a cheese making process. Now you know exactly who Dawn is. This episode really makes things confusing. I thought Dawn was a sister who stayed with Dad, or maybe a step-sister but everyone seems to know her and she "grew up in this house" so that theory was curdled.

The Testimony of Mushroom

Its ok, your confusion is perfectly normal and exactly where everyone else was when watching this show. But, just trust the show. Yes, there are some little foreshadowings in previous seasons but just remember that those of us who watched the show in real time had to wait months between the end of season 4 and the start of season 5, and we didn't have the ability to easily go back and watch previous episodes. So we were just as confused as you.

Matthew

your boyfriend is awesome lol

Belle GC

I really have to concentrate to sync up so I can't watch until later after work. Probably late tonight. โ˜น๏ธ But yay for another episode!

Melissa

Have you never heard the children's poem 'little miss muffet'? ๐Ÿค”

CeNedra

When I'm told "The coming X is the best thing ever!" I find it a lot harder to enjoy X. That's a lot of pressure to like it. I kind of wish people would let reactors just experience the show without setting expectations.

Jonathan Hall

Tara is a main character the actress just isnโ€™t a cast member for reasons I left in 5.1 comments

Michael Matthews

There was actually mention of Dawn in passing, but it's probably easy to miss. Even Faith mentions Dawn in the shared dream-state that her and Buffy had awhile back. But yeah, there isn't very much and it is supposed to be a huge surprise for the season opener. lol Looking it up, it said the big foreshadowing of Dawn coming were "Graduation, Part 2" (s3e22) and "This Year's Girl" (s4e15). They're a lot easier to spot on the rewatch once you know she's coming in season 5. At the time these episodes were airing for the first time I missed the hints as well.

mojo shivers

Woo! My treat for when I finish work later :)
