Hi, I'm very glad you enjoyed this episode! It's considered one of the best (if not THE best for some) and I think for good reasons. This is one of the funniest to me too. A few jokes you've missed: Xander thought Willow was mimicking that The Gentlemen wanted boobs; everyone thought Buffy was mimicking giving a handjob when she wanted to mimic staking; and Buffy showed to Giles that she didn't have big hips, unlike his drawing of her. Also, Tara, the new witch friend of Willow, is adorable. Lastly, I wish we knew more about Giles and Olivia's past. How long have they known each other? Where did they meet?

In a wonderfully 'meta' moment, my browser had a technical issue and froze the video... and I thought that it was Cass' video freezing again. It took me too long to realize she wasn't moving either!

The other significant thing about the scene where Buffy and Riley confront The Gentlemen, is that Buffy and her team had done the research and Buffy knew what was going on and how to defeat the bad guys. Riley and the Initiative on the other hand, only knew they were bad guys to be stopped. When his zap gun didn't work, Riley was out of ideas.

This is one of my all time favourite Buffy episodes, safely in the top half of my top 5!
It is such a goop piece of television even outside the Buffyverse. If I remember rightly this episode won an Emmy.
So glad you loved it and appreciated to outstanding quality. Season four is like that in my opinion. The season as a whole (very much in my own opinion)is not among to top seasons but so many of the individual season 4 episodes are not just jaw dropping, heart stopping quality examples of television but start to reshape the Buffyverse from kids in high school to adults in collage/working world and the epic shift of responsibility that brings.
Many shows fail as they try to bring a teenaged characters out of high school and into college and earning a living but Buffy did it so well or they couldn’t have ended up showing a cast of characters growing up from 16 to 23. I just can’t imagine a show manage to do it as well ever again.

The sound track of this episode, so very haunting and evocative, was composed by Christophe Beck, who scored most of Seasons 2 & 3, all of 4, and a very important episode in each of 5 & 6, as well as many movies...and Frozen. His work on Buffy is wonderful!

This is my favorite episode of buffy followed by one other that most fans who have watched the show know what I’m talking abt;). It it is so good and the gentlemen are so creepy. I categorize this as the 2nd of 3 creepy episodes of buffy. The first being killed by death in season 2 and the third is one you have yet to watch. Idk if anyone else commented this but joss made this episode because so many people said the only reason buffy was good was because it relied on the funny dialogue and he wanted to prove them wrong and this episode is now one of the favorites of the whole show.

In case there were still people who hadn't yet understood that communication is one of the main themes of the season, in this episode they spelled it out loud and clear.
You are absolutely right to pay close attention to what is said in class, but not exactly for the reasons you think. Professor Walsh's lecture are often used to provide viewers with the required psychological elements and concepts on which the episode's framework is built. Like in “Beer Bad” for example, while here she explain us how communication and language are not the same thing and how, sometimes, you can communicate certain things better when you don't have to relay on words. Perfect example it's the final scene where Buffy and Riley, now that they can talk, sit in silence unable to say anything.
I honestly don't know who come out with the original idea, but I would like to pay him, or her, my compliments for the brilliant “lore” behind the design of the gentlemen. Visually, the style of their suits, the restrain jackets' old design for the henchmen, recalls directly British society at the end of 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, all the other elements also fit perfectly with such image. They have henchmen because the gentlemen of the period regarded any kind of physical activity or labor as beneath them, something for the “little people”. Another gentlemen's trait was to be “soft spoken”. They were able to say the most vile things but always without raising their voice, a thing considered rude. Clearly the all “silence” thing fits perfectly with this idea. At the end, the way to kill them, again perfectly on theme, the scream of a princess. The idea that a “princess” … a woman dared to make her voice heard was enough to make their heads explode.
PS: It didn't have to be Buffy, any woman would do, she just was there and knew what to do.
We could talk for a long time about this iconic and award-winning episode, but I would like to focus on a small detail that has always struck me.
During the final fight, Buffy tries to tell Riley to smash the wooden box but he instead breaks the empty glass jar while giving her that proud smirk, in stark contrast we see how at the same time Willow and Tara manage to understand each other's intentions and needs of the other and to act in synchrony in an absolutely natural, almost instinctive way.
Again the same thing happens at the end, Willow and Tara speak openly while Buffy and Riley sit in silence.
I probably give too much importance to these details and read things into them that aren't there, but I can't help but grasp a fundamental difference in communication and mutual understanding between Buffy and Riley and between Willow and Tara.

This time you seemed a little lost in following what was happening on screen, but I blame it on the technical issues you're having. They can be really distracting and you're already trying to do two things at once: follow the episode and comment on it.
Shows from this period can sometimes be tricky because they assumed they had viewers' complete and undivided attention and didn't hold your hand. Then again it made sense, generally back then you couldn't go back if you missed something or couldn't immediately rewatch the episode. You only had one chance to watch the episode so you were completely focused on what was happening on screen.
For this reason I wanted to suggest you turn on the subtitles. Maybe you've already thought about them and found them distracting, but if not, they might give you a little extra help following the story.

This totally should have won an Emmy. The soundtrack was awesome.
That use of computer-voice by Maggie Walsh was tres magnifique it had so many weird implications about science and the supernatural, etc. Also what were Riley and Forrest doing getting all sweaty down in the Demon pit? They were "working out" or what with the demon with the big horns or something?
The new girl Tara is a kind of different character -- a shy girl. The telekinesis of the coke machine was some awesome wonder twins power type magic, also a cool special effect.
Those floating guys were nightmare fuel for sure -- so well done.
Creeping horror is hard to do outside of books, but they did it and it worked. Great storytelling, and significant plot developments to the characters and all. I suppose the amnesia thing will go on with Sunnydale as it always does -- I mean after the Mayor was seen turning into a big snake and eating people in broad daylight, then an epic vampire battle during the eclipse and the school blowing up ...
well I guess they just carried on with some "help" from the Federal government or something. I mean downtown looks great, and the University is definitely well funded ....

Seriously one of the best of the show, if not the best. The intelligence in the storytelling combined with the best villains ever to grace the show make this so memorable. I especially the stabby stabby charade moment. That got the biggest laugh all season when we were watching it.
I'm jealous you got to experience this for the first time. I wish I could go back and erase my memory to to watch this episode again fresh.

This is the first of three themed episodes that break the typical mold all of which rank in the very top episodes. This one came from the criticism that Joss is a one trick pony only capable of fast paced, witty dialogue over mediocre stories. In response he made this episode with very little dialogue.

Quoting Joss Whedon, who both wrote and directed this episode, on how he created The Gentlemen, "They (the Gentlemen) came from many storybooks and many silent movies and many horror movies and many nightmares and Mr. Burns (from The Simpsons). There's a little bit of Mr. Burns."
I also think he must have been inspired by images of what surgeons used to be. Those are scalpels they are carrying, and if you look up images of how surgeons dressed to perform surgery in the 1800's, they wore formal black suits, not sterile white gowns.

Hush is one of my all time favourite episodes. Notice that the theme is communication (in both its good and bad forms) as Maggie explains in the opening scene. Just about every scene in the episode hits that theme in one way or another. But the main point is that it's only when they stop talking that they really start communicating. Even the final scene, where Buffy and Riley can talk and they just sit in uncomfortable silence is on point.

I knew you would love this episode! This is the only episode of the entire series to garner an Emmy nomination - for writing. The theme of communication comes in right at the beginning and then is present throughout - how we communicate, what we say with our words, our actions, and our feelings. It's a brilliant gem of an episode that ranks high among Buffy fans' favorites.

Oooh, if you love fairy tales, you really should watch the limited-series called The 10th Kingdom! Fairy tales and humor and fantasy; I think you would enjoy it. Since it's a limited series, if you wanted to do a reaction to it, it wouldn't be a lengthy commitment to a new series. It's 5 episodes total, though the episodes themselves are each about the length of a movie, so you may want to break them in half. Or you could simply enjoy the miniseries on your own.

Iconic episode!
There's something I need to put out there tho. Just because it's always bothered me... Even though people use it interchangeably, Wicca/n is not a synonym for witch. And Wicca is not a synonym for witchcraft, it's a religion that's all about worshipping mother nature, originally anyway. A lot of Wiccans do coincidently practice witchcraft, but others don't. So Willow (and possibly Tara) are in the wrong group if they were expecting literal magic and spell casting. If anything, those bake sale mean girls are wannabe-Wiccans.

There's a reason why this is a fan-favorite episode! One of my all-time favorites, the quiet atmosphere, the creepiness, the chilling song, Buffy offended by Giles' drawing of her, that strange girl from the Wicca group, her and Willow's combined strength, the mutual uncovering of Buffy and Riley's secrets, the Xander/Anya/Spike scene, ALL of it.
