The First Album as called by fans. The first dance pop album. When Madonna signed with Sire Records in 81 she was given a 3 single deal with an option to become an album deal.
Prior to this she had left her dance scholarship at the University of Michigan Ann-Arbor to become a famous professional dancer and danced for the legendary Alvin Aliey, Martha Graham and Pearl Lang dance troops in NYC. Then got a role as a backup dancer and singer for Patrick Henderez before his producers offered her a development deal and she moved to Paris for a few months before leaving. She didn't like that they would control her sound and image. Upon returning to New York she started writing music and formed The Breakfast Club with her then boyfriend, Dan Gilroy, and his brother, Ed, and couple other rotating band members. She started as a drummer then guitarist and started demanding more time as the singer. She booked gigs at CBGBs, Max Kansas City and other venues and eventually left with half the band. The Gilroy Bros say she out grew them and they didn't have it to go where she was destined for. She formed Madonna and Sky which became Emmy her second band with former boyfriend from Michigan Stephen Bray doing more of the punk and new wave scene in NYC and also was frequenting the gay clubs. She signed another development deal with a woman Camille Barbone who wanted her to become the next Pat Benatar. She and Stephen began working on a demo of dance songs that she eventually got the DJ at Danceteria Mark Kamins to take home and he then got her to Sire Records home of the Ramones, the Dead Boys, the Undertones, Talking Heads, the Cure, the Smiths, Soft Cell and Depeche Mode
They originally wanted Ain't No Big Deal to be the single but no one could make it sound right so Everybody was released. Everybody didn't chart the highest but Seymour Stein was so impressed by her, her charisma, her business sense, her music writing, her musicality and ambition he green lighted her album. She was considered making black music and disco. Warner Records didn't see the draw of a white girl making a disco album so he got Warner International to give him the money to make the record. They selected Reggie Lucas to produce. She wrote 5 of the 8 songs on the album. After the album was finished she hated how it sounded so had her then boyfriend and famed DJ John "Jellybean" Bentiz remix it. First album by a female artist to sell over 3 million

I love how back in the day they gave the songs room to breathe and unfold. For single release and radio airplay they did edit them though. Back then somewhere between 3 and 4 minutes was considered the ideal length for a pop single. Of course these days that would be considered a long song. It's crazy.
What I don't like is how they sometimes change stuff for the streaming versions of albums. For starters that isn't even the original album cover. I have to admit I do like this picture better tho. And like someone else has mentioned it is not the original album version of Holiday. I wish they wouldn't do that.
Fun fact: In 1985 after Madonna's shot to super stardom during the Like a Virgin era the debut album was re-released in Europe with a new title ("The First Album") and completely new artwork. All the later re-releases have been with the original title and artwork tho.

Such a great reaction. Love you focus on all the little details. BTW on streaming the version of Holiday is actually a remix from her greatest hits album The immaculate Collection. The original album version is actually much funkier and has a bit more of a bite to it.

Been watching your reactions on Youtube, and the Madonna journey got me to subscribe! Loved your reaction to her first album - this one always seems to resonate with people new to her music. Very curious what you will think of Like A Virgin. Hopefully, you'll find a way to do the music videos, and tours?

Your Madonna reactions have finally got me to subscribe. I love your respect and energy for her. It’s been fun to see you approach things in a non conventional way - a few live first then videos and bow albums. Im so glad you have flipped to the start of the journey. If you do the songs first you get to appreciate them, add on the layer of a video (so many gems for you to watch) and then end with the live version you try to join all the dots for the ultimate experience.
Completely non Madonna related, but you with your dog are such a cute picture!
