9/11 was the whole motivating force for my generation of vets. I was part of the first Academy class to show up after 9/11: we were the first to show up not knowing exactly what we were getting into - but feeling we had to go anyway, the first to have our size increased to over 300 after a decade of budget cuts, the first in decades to arrive during a time of war. Our courses and training all came from that post-9/11 experience, of counter-terrorism and homeland security. We knew nothing of the Coast Guard from before, except what others told us.
I spent a long time thinking about how to make a comic about today, because I knew how much those attacks impacted myself and everyone I served alongside. As I sat thinking about it, I realize the comic I wanted to make was exactly about how it propelled me - and everyone - forward.
Thanks to all of you who jumped in right when things were murkiest.
