New Patreon here, this might have been mentioned. But the line after Daniel is baptised, the one you don't hear him say to Eli, the one that gives him a look of shock? I believe he said "I'm going to eat you up." In the final scene with the two Daniel says something to the effect "Didn't I tell you I was going to eat you up!"

Also it's fun because milkshakes had booze in them back in the day.

Fun fact: Alcoholic!Daniel used milkshakes out of all drinks as an example... because in those days they put BOOZE in them.

I prefer Anderson's earlier work: Magnolia, Boogie Nights & Punch Drunk Love. TWBB and his later films are well made but colder & harder to enjoy imo

It was too dark for me. I must have a happy ending.

It's probably worth watching all of PTA's movies, but more than any of them, I really hope you consider Inherent Vice. His greatest film, IMO.

What an incredible movie to return to after at least a decade since last seeing this! You guys have been watching some movies with serious pedigree and we're all here for it! Punch Drunk Love was my first PTA film and first time seeing Sandler's range.
If you haven't already watched them, the Safdie Brothers have also created some phenomenal movies showcasing the range of Pattinson (Good Time) and Sander(Uncut Gems), again!

This was the first time watching this and I thought it was great. I don't think it lived up to the hype, but it was hyped to hell. I thought DDL was great as usual. Great movie, but I probably won't watch it again. Of the Paul Thomas Anderson movies I've seen, 'Boogie Nights' is my favorite and I've probably seen it at least 8-10 times.

"I don't think this is someone he wants to see in this moment."
LOL.
No one else is going to suggest this but, please, do consider The Boxer (1997). My favourite DDL performance.

Don’t forget Phantom Thread too. It’s a shame it was so slept on, DDL is masterful in it.

I find DDL's character to be the most despicable, unlikeable, and disgusting person ever portrayed on-screen. He deserved his Oscar, and I hope never to have to see that film again.

In the end, Daniel--and along with him Capitalism--replaces Eli--and along with him religion--as the great abuser, manipulator, and ruler of the people. "I AM THE THIRD REVELATION!" In the end, the church comes to the capitalist for a loan, and gets murdered for its troubles. I've always looked at this movie--which is brilliant--as a kind of new bible story...the rise of the great mythic figure, his son (who seemingly is born without a mother, as opposed to no father), his false brother (the devil), and so on. This and 'The Master' are probably my favorite Paul Thomas Anderson movies...although 'Boogie Nights' is still a great watch.

Such a great film. One of my favourites.
That final scene with HW was tragic. I hated how they put it in the film, but i suppose it had to happen

In regards to Boogie Nights, I think PTA was influenced by and paid homage to Scorsese, Mikhail Kalatozov, Robert Altman and Stanley Kubrick.

I know folks have already recommended a couple other movies with Daniel, but I wanted to remind you two about Age of Innocence! It has Daniel Day Lewis but also Winona Ryder, Michelle Pfieffer and Richard E. Grant and was directed by Martin Scorcese (one of his rare period piece movies and it's so beautiful O.O).

Last comment on this movie: Paul Dano wasn't the original actor hired for the part, but the original actor was so intimidated by Daniel Day Lewis, they had to totally scrap 3 weeks of footage until they found Paul Dano. But who can blame anyone for being intimidated by DDL?!

Favorite Paul Thomas Anderson movie and favorite DDL performance. Jonny Greenwood's score (guitarist from the band Radiohead) is also perfect in its use in this movie. Can't say enough good things about every aspect of this film.

That oil fire was 100% real too. PTA's crew told him they couldn't guarantee such a big fire could be kept under control.

Can't wait for yall to see (Tom Cruise) Frank TJ Mackie, in P.T. Andersons "Magnolia".
P.T. Anderson casted John C Reilley in Boogie Nights btw bc of his role in Casualties of War, he wanted him to play a very similar character.

DDL's best work, and that is a high bar to pass.
Small bit of trivia - DDL ad-libbed the part about drinking the milkshake as being synonymous with oil drilling. DDL, being a method actor and all, went to some oil executives retreat or conference, as part of the role preparation and overheard someone talking about extracting oil using "drinking milkshake" metaphor. So DDL used it, unscripted, in the final scene.

Paul Thomas Anderson is my favorite director! There is a LOT of "Goodfellas" influence in "Boogie Nights" as far as story structure and camera technique. Might be interesting if you guys have really enjoyed your Scorsese adventure :)

Sam & TBR,
THERE/BLOOD is, no exaggeration, is my top film of the 2000s. It is the only 2 hr+film I saw twice in theaters (once with my former fiancée & then with my mother/grandmother). To me, it has some many allegorical tie-ins to the psychology of human selfish ambition: both in the 20s & in the 21st century. So many layers to unfold.
This makes my ❤️ sing in volumes this won the poll & you covered it. Godspeed! 👌
P.S. both times I took people to see this in the theaters, both parties also enjoyed it.
