Great comment. I saw this with a couple of shipmates while I was in the Navy. Man we had a great discussion afterwards and we didn't all agree on who was right.

Love Denzel and Hackman, however, I spent 4 years on a sub and nothing about this is true. I know how much I hate it though when my attorney brother puts down some courtroom drama that I love but I feel sorry that he cannot enjoy an otherwise good movie just because he knows too much about the subject. If you want a pretty darn accurate move, check out The Hunt for Red October. The Navy even helped out with the filming, I know because I was there, whoops, I've said too much.

Asked to do the unthinkable.. The Captain was right about leaning on the chain of command.. There is no way you would ever participate in a nuclear attack, unless you were committed to the proposition that the action was a last option by the Commander-in-Chief, and that all protocols were followed.. Another situational stressful movie on the Cold War era is 'Fail-Safe' starring Henry Fonda.. Hackman, an actor who just draws you into the situation.. Like Robert Duvall..

Yes, The Wire. Better show, fewer seasons and episodes. More relevant to everyday life.

As someone who served onboard fast attack subs, the idea of James Gandolfini’s character, the supply officer aka “Chop”, being that hardcore, will forever amuse me 😂 You should check out “U-571” for some more WWII sub action.

Didn't Tarantino and Denzel have some kind of argument or altercation on the Crimson Tide set? I vaguely remember reading about this several years back..

Okay, I’ll grant that there are some less-than-stellar senior NCOs, though USUALLY guys like you describe don’t end up COBs or Sergeant Majors—I’m sorry that guy slipped through. I still have trouble with, well, most of this movie. A friend asked once why I thought Hunt for Red October was great and CT laughable. My response was basically, “October is a movie about highly professional, competent adults behaving ultra-realistically in a mostly-plausible situation. Tide…had an interesting premise, but was written by someone who was not nearly as mature or educated as the subjects he was trying to portray.” I love (sarcasm) the seen where Denzel talks about, basically, nuclear war being bad, and the other officers depicted as absolutely stunned by his brilliant insights. 🙄😁 Okay, I’ll stop ragging on it—if this couple watched the entire Ed Wood catalogue I’d be right there with them; they’re just so much bloody fun to watch movies with.

Also, a submarine isn't 90% stairs, and Maneuvering isn't just a guy at the bottom of a lake with a phone, lol. If you've got water in Maneuvering at the top of a 4-story vessel (technically 3 in the ER), you've already got like 30x the volume of water required to permanently sink the submarine because it's not designed to support 80% water in the people spaces.
I will say that turning against the COB is possible if he's like one of the guys we had. He was going for E9 and was always screwing his guys over, especially the nukes. Separately, manning tried to screw over our EDMC so he went into retirement rather than taking an E9 promotion and post in Guam, and he decided instead to work at the shipyard where we were home ported (all he asked from the Navy was a 3 month extension so his kids could finish high school). Later, our former EDMC ran into the COB at lunch, sitting with some other brass. He interrupted the COB's lunch to say, "Hey, congratulations, I heard you made Master. Maybe now you'll be a real COB and stop fuckin' your guys". Walked off like a boss.

That would make sense, because so much of it was wrong, haha. I served on boomers, and as I was going through training, if your exam answer was an embarrassing wash of nonsense, you'd sometimes get a hand-written acronym of MIRN - Maybe in the Russian Navy, haha.

Constant claustrophobia is why sailors hate this movie, haha. From this movie, you'd think a submarine was all stairs, and that Maneuvering is a pillbox (it actually seats 4 very comfortably, packs 9-10 during drills). Boomers are friggin big - 560 feet long, 80 feet wide, 4 stories tall (3 in the engine room). It's like walking in a normal house, except it's big enough to get lost for the first week or so (or six months if you're an overconfident junior officer, haha). Seeing one in dry dock is an awesome sight - the most amazing BBC of death you'll ever see in your life.
Crimson Tide is one of the least accurate Navy movies of all time, in terms of submarine depiction and organizational relationships, but fair play to the movie for doing its thing and getting the audience riled up.

Could do two episodes a week. It's roughly an hour and a half, pretty much a feature film length reaction. Or they could do one season, switch to another series then swap back.

The film is awesome in the way it creates intensity and non-stop adrenaline rushes using scenes full of action, and scenes that aren't. The torpedo attack with the Russian sub was so fast-paced and packed with energy that it makes you bounce in your seat. Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington gave awesome performances, and their growing tension towards each other is enough to keep the excitement at a consistent high through the last half of the film. I don't appreciate how Hackman's character is regarded by most moviegoers as a mad man. He is just simply a seasoned, tough-as-nails military officer who must assume that the US is in danger, and he must stick by the orders that require him to go to drastic measures to protect us. The director did a good job at raising the tension, even though the ending was very predictable. The message at the very start of the film set the perfect tone. The entire film is in a way scary by making us wonder what would happen in a situation like this, and how the military could establish proper operating procedures for it. However, the message at the end of the film re-establishes some hope.
As for James Gandolfini... he always plays a bad-ass villain!!!
I hope you guys consider reacting to The Sopranos the greatest television series of all time. It was this show that really paved the way for prestige television that it is today. It is safe to say that without this creation, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Mad Men,Ozark and other such iconic shows would not exist.

Great reaction—you guys make everything you watch entertaining; and this movie proves it because if you have any military experience at all,the film is kinda silly, written by—you guessed it—people with no military experience at all. For a start, the captain with a dog on board peeing in a six billion dollar submarine “because he’s got experience so they won’t say anything” is hilariously childish writing. Some O-4 or O-5 would have reported him long ago and no, the navy is NOT afraid of their captains. Also, the enlisted crew wouldn’t have turned against the COB, I can pretty much guarantee it. A shame, because the film deals with an interesting topic, but written very amateurishly. A double shame since the actors involved are capable of handling great material. The music was good though…

I think the movie is a bit based on an incident on a Soviet sub during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Since everyone is pulling for Sopranos, which I love, I’ll recommend The Wire along with it.

I had no idea about that!
I liked this movie when it came out. Rewatched it way later and it felt a bit cheesy. But I’ll rewatch it to see if I feel a bit different along with the channel.
The subject matter is as serious as it ever was…

Fun fact : After reviewing the final script, the production company were a little worried that the audience might find the movie super stressful due to it's serious subject matter and relentless tension
So Quentin Tarantino was sent the script and they asked him to help out and if he had any ideas to add comedy elements to lighten the mood and give some relief,so he was responsible for all the Silver Surfer and Star Trek dialogue as well as some of the other one liners

The last 60 minutes of the movie is almost in real time. 60 minutes to launch, 60 minutes to the end credits.

If you enjoyed this, you should check out The Last Castle (2001) with Robert Redford and James Gandolfini, similar type of plot where 2 strong-willed men headbutting against each other with everything at their disposal.
Gandolfini was spectacular as an antagonist.

Yeah, it's pretty silly rounding up for a show that would already be the longest they've watched.
Let's say it's 80.

Highly recommend considering The Sopranos for the TV show react when you've finished CK or Arcane. It does have six seasons but they're HBO seasons. IIRC, they averaged 13 eps a season. Gandolfini is just amazing in it. As is almost every other actor.

Crimson Tide is definitely a great choice for reactors. Constant tension, constant claustrophobia, and two great lead performances. Really enjoyed watching along!
By the way, Cop Land, amazingly, featured 13 actors who went on to be in The Sopranos. I counted as I watched! Now we have Crimson Tide with 2 MORE Sopranos actors, including James Gandolfini.
The reaction gods are telling you to watch The Sopranos. They don't even care that it's 90 episodes!
