Road to Perdition (2002) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Mendes was borrowing from Sam Peckinpah

Jason Mangen

Not sure if someone already mentioned it but this film is based on the graphic novel, of the same name. Glad to see it getting some love from you two!

Yes the Frank Nitti who was the boss in Chicago in this movie is the same Frank Nitti that TBR and Sam saw in The Untouchables, except in that movie he was thrown off the roof at the end and ended up in the car. Two very different fictional portrayals of a very real historical person. This was a very good movie. Cinderella Man is indeed another very good movie.

I use scene changes to sync it up. You can easily see it, and you can also vaguely see what's happening to make stuff out. For example, in Evil Dead when the guy first goes into the cabin, there's something where for some reason in TBR's video it skips ahead a bit.. and I didn't notice until it got to the clock scene. Then it was way out of sync.. I was able to know when it changed because I could see that it skipped from him opening the door to the cabin, to turning on the light switch. Even though it was very blurry you can still make it out.. But scene switches are the easiest coz the entire screen changes.. I usually will use those to make sure it's synced. Usually one will be off by a second or less and then I just pause and unpause the one that's ahead by the amount of time it's ahead. It's a bit tricky too when they watch on HBO Max because they have that HBO Max intro video which most other platforms don't have, or sometimes they will have a different intro .. I use a Magic Trackpad on my Mac so it's basically like a laptop control. I use the left/right arrow keys to rewind/ff usually.. I don't use the cursor except to initially position if I have to. Hope this helps. A countdown would be harder. If it's way out of whack usually what I'll do is pause the one I'm watching, and note the time index, and then I will rewind the reaction to a bit before it and hit play, and then once the reaction hits the time index I hit play on the show/movie. But this didn't work for Evil Dead because they actually skipped part of the movie somehow but the timer didn't skip. I dunno if they dropped frames or what. I'm assuming they're using OBS.

Second this! Third and Fourth it as well. Newman is great but it’s also a really entertaining courtroom story.

Michael Soukup

It was tricky on Netflix also if it messes up for any reason because its hard to get it exact since you can't see whats happening and you can't scroll on a laptop the way you would with a control. It would be easier if the reverse timer were put as well counting down from the end of the movie.

I watched this on Tubi with ads. It was a bit tricky getting it synched up but it was worth it. Great reaction!

forgot to add that its so cool that Connor was played by an "unknown" Daniel Craig, who would go on to BIGGER things soon after......

I recommended The Verdict a while back--a truly fabulous film. Paul Newman deserved an Oscar for it.

I am so glad you enjoyed RTP. Seeing Hanks as a bad guy is refreshing, and of course Paul Newman is always a gem. God, I miss that guy, RIP

Chris Bruneau

Seconded "Color of Money" - can't beat Paul Newman/Tom Cruise/Scorsese combo. But in this case you gotta watch The Hustler (1961) first, which is sort of prequel to "Color of Money", Paul Newman is basically playing the same character he played in 1961 movie, just much older.

Road to Perdition is absolutely a super hero movie, facts!

I can't believe it's finally here. I'm GV on youtube, I finally joined your patreon again for this reaction. The cinematography and musical score in this film are perfectly amazing. If you notice, the film starts getting brighter as it goes on. That was done intentionally to signal the relationship between father and son getting better, as well as redemption. Also, when Mike kills John, the people in the window where all you could pretty much see is light and the figure, was also done intentionally to signify angels and god watching. A few things that some may not notice. Any time somebody dies in this movie, there is water around. The rain, the water in the tub, the river outside of the club, more rain, the lake at the end. Water is kind of used as a harbinger for death in this movie. The characters of John and Connor Rooney are real (Looney, instead of Rooney). The timeline is fictional. Connor Rooney was actually assassinated in the early 1920's and his father lived until the 1940's. The character of Mike, it is widely suspected that he was based on a hitman that was betrayed in the Irish mob, which I forget his name. Also, what you are seeing here is nearly the end of the Capone outfit. A few months from when this is set, Capone and Frank Nitti (which was Capone's 2nd cousin) were both sentenced to prison for tax evasion. Nitti served like a year and a half and then became the acting boss once he got out of prison. Capone of course was sentenced to like 12 years, and served less time because of his syphilis which means he never regained power. So when Nitti said "Al wants your assurance that it's done"...he wasn't wrong. He remained the boss for like 10 years after that until his suicide. A bit of unwarranted history. I love movies and history set in the depression era. I would suggest Cinderella Man next. It's a great film, a Ron Howard film. It isn't as slow as this movie and it's a great story of somebody rising up and becoming a symbol for the common man during the great depression. Most importantly, it's a mostly true story. One of the characters in the film was exaggerated and turned into a villian, which he was not in real life.

Word. Thomas Newman is a true treasure to cinema.

Philip Davetas

Fun little detail - quite a while after this, Tyler Hoechlin (the 'oe' is pronounced as just an E sound, so it sounds like HECK-lin when he says it himself) went on to star in Teen Wolf on MTV, as Derek Hale :D

Rue

I love the soundtrack to this one. I don't think Thomas Newman gets enough credit for his body of work.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

When people say Robin can't be done in a Batman movie...I always bring up Road To Perdition.

Ghost Crusaders

I'm surprised you guys did this one. Not a movie that's talked about much, but I still love it. So well crafted. It's very much an homage to LONE WOLF AND CUB, which is a movie series I really love as well. Apparently, Disney loves this concept as well because they did it again with THE MANDALORIAN.

Philip Davetas

You don’t know how many times I refreshed this past week hoping for this movie lol

Thank you!! Yes, Connor got off fairly easy considering all he'd done! -Sam

Excellent reaction to an excellent movie! I just wished Connor suffered more in the end. I wanted that heartless creep to plead and fear for his life. He went too fast, without a word. Damn it.

Mr. Writhms

The scene where Rooney was killed is SOO well filmed. With the rain falling and the streetlights lighting up that particular part of the street, it was just soo beautifully shot.

Scott Kerr

Paul Newman actually played piano quite well, here is a small clip from Inside Actor's Studio where he shreds some Jazz improvs https://youtu.be/Kl-_f17-ki0

Alec S

Would love if more Paul Newman makes the channel - like Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy, The Hustler, Nobody's Fool, The Verdict, The Sting, Color of Money, Slap Shot.

Birdie Num Num

I Love Paul Newman in this Movie, he is one of the Biggest Stars of the 60's and 70's, 9 Times Oscar Nominated ... "The Hustler" "The Sting" and "The Colour of Money" are all Classics and already on your List !! What's Missing is "Cat in a Hot Tin Roof" from 1958, "Cool Hand Luke" from 1967 and " Torn Curtain" from 1966 by Alfred Hitchcock
