L.A. Confidential (1997) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Since I'm a bit of a night owl this seemed like a good film to dig up out of the archives. A great example of modern noir.

James Rogers

Yeah, Deathtrap's a good one.

Neal Romanek

Sam should check out Imitation of Life with Lana Turner. The tears will flow!

Birdie Num Num

For Mystery Thriller recommendations, I'd like to recommend a movie which is a bit different because it also has comedic aspects: Deathtrap (1982) with Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve, and Dyan Cannon. It's based on the stage play, and the movie looks and feels like one. I'd say that it's closer to tone to Clue but less silly and more pathos.

Ron

I think Stompanato was Turner's boyfriend, not her husband. But otherwise, yes it was very messy.

Jen Barnes

Oh wow! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes! Can't wait to watch this again :) -Sam

Copland is definitely going up in our Stallone Series! -Sam

Just an added tidbit—Johnny Stompanato was a real small-time gangster in LA and he married Lana Turner. He was killed by her (or maybe her daughter). I think most people think she accepted responsibility to shield her daughter but I don’t know the facts of the case. Apparently he was a real nasty guy and beat her up all the time.

Michael Soukup

Oh JJ what a great list. And a great name. Hopefully TBR will find out what movie it’s from soon!

Michael Soukup

👍

Michael Soukup

I would just change the recommendation for Murder on the Orient Express to the 1974 film which I think is superior in every way. Branagh has Poirot stepping in dog poop!😭

Michael Soukup

I would definitely second the recommendation of Chinatown—truly one of the great new-noirs of all-time.

Michael Soukup

Agree!

Michael Soukup

I agree but if they're gonna watch 'em might as well watch 'em in order. At least for Patriot Games and CaPD. The others can be in whatever order I guess. I got the order from this article, but seems to be in the order the movies came out.

Alex

One of my favorite movies. It gets better on subsequent watches because you know who everyone is.

Jen Barnes

I think you may like The Manchurian candidate(the original), All The President's Men, The Parallax View, Blow Out. All sort of in the conspiracy thriller subgenre. In terms of neo noir/mysteries like LA Confidential (not mentioning Chinatown since I'm sure you have plans to react to that) - you may like Devil in a Blue Dress, Miller's Crossing, The Grifters,

Birdie Num Num

I really enjoyed the Sum of All Fears. I generally don't think of it in terms of being a Clancy/Jack Ryan film; I mean, it definitely is, but Jack Ryan is almost always played by a different actor, so the continuity doesn't seem super important to me.

Murf

The best death scene in cinema for me was Kevin Spacy in this roll. The way he chuckles and how all life in his eyes fades away. Great actor.

PIG

The guy that played Dudley was also the President of the United States in Clear and Present Danger. Really good movie I dunno if you guys are planning to do the whole Tom Clancy line of films? You already did Hunt for Red October. Here are the movies in order: Patriot Games Clear and Present Danger NetForce The Sum of all Fears Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Without Remorse Then there's the Amazon "Jack Ryan" series I've seen season 1 of with the guy that plays Jim in The Office. Also, have you haven't seen The Office and you guys loved Office Space.. You guys gotta watch that!! The episodes are like super super short so you can do quite a few of them in one go, I think they're like 25 minutes each. Quick aside there, but The Office is hilarious if you guys haven't watched it. There's more Tom Clancy movies I haven't watched, Sum of all Fears was the last I watched, and I think a lot of purists didn't like that one and I'm guessing they think the newer ones suck probably ;) I dunno but the earlier ones are great. Also Air Force One with Harrison Ford is really good as well. Harrison Ford would be a good actor to watch his films. Indiana Jones 1,2,3 .. Crystal Skull is meh but it's an Indy film. And Witness is a really good movie if you haven't seen it with music scored by Maurice Jarre, the father of electronic music pioneer Jean Michel Jarre. Oh btw, I dunno if you guys connected this I think at one point TBR said about Fleur-de-lis "That's the symbol" I dunno if you meant the name of the place associated with that symbol, but at one point you were like "What is that symbol called? It's like the Saints have that logo." The logo is called the same as that guy's company-- fleur de lis. lol

Alex

I still dream of a sequel set in the last 70s early 80s called NY Confidential starring Guy Pearce and Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger. It can also star Bud and Lynn's 25 year old son who is a New York cop who has uncovered a conspiracy.

Jason Dolan

Some of the best reactions ever. That Rolo Tomasi moment was perfect.

Jason Dolan

Another absolute banger with Russel Crowe is "The Insider" based on a true story. I think his performance in it is outstanding.

Christopher B.

Another good corrupt cop movie, Copland with Sylvester Stallone and Robert Deniro, Harvey Keitel. Sly gives Oscar worthy performance. Gained a lot of weight for the role.

Jonathan Patrick

One of my favorite movies ever made. A pitch-perfect screenplay, from character development to the way the plot unfolds, to the cinematography to the incredible lighting and how shadow plays such an important role in the world. Absolutely brilliant and thrilled that you guys watched and enjoyed it as much as you did.

Gary Giaimo

So good to see you react to this movie, and some of the other major reactors besides yourself should watch this gem. It was so frustrating to watch the Oscars the year this film lost to Titanic. Of course at the time I hadn't seen Titanic yet even though it had been in the theaters for months, and then I went to see it and began to understand why it beat this film. But I have always considered this film to be superior to Titanic. Your are right, that Rollo Tomasi reveal is one of the best in cinema.

Mike LL

Brick and Seven are two films that I would agree are of this style... and that's not easy to find! I might add Miller's Crossing (1990) as well...

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

"You're all going in my report!" Exley is one of my favourite characters in film. Period (even though Dan wanted him to be punched in the face a few more times!) I have to admit, this is the first film in a while that I've been excited about y'all watching and it was a wondrous reaction! So happy you guys enjoyed it :)

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Se7en won a poll recently, so it should be coming in the next few weeks! (Memento was in that same poll, and also stars Guy Pearce who just played Ed Exley in LA Confidential. I would LOVE to see them try to get their heads around Memento...)

Future Boy

Oh, and im glad you guys liked this. Check out Chinatown next. Between this and Chinatown you have the best Noirs of the last 50 years.

Shaun2342!

Uhh.. If this is only the second Russell Crowe movie you guys have watched, Gladiator needs to be a priority. Js.

Shaun2342!

I would looooooove to see them react to Sherlock. One of my favorites.

Aimee

This has been one of my favorite movies since it came out when I was 15, and I love seeing more people now react to it who have never heard about it. Jack’s death is always such a shock to everyone.

Aimee

Crime/Mystery recommendations for Sam. Even if the channel doesn't react to them, she will enjoy these a lot. Hi Sam! -The Fugitive (1993 Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee Jones) -Se7en (1995 Director Fincher, Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman) -Murder on the Orient Express (2017) -Brick (2005 Director Rian Johnson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt) -Sherlock 2010 BBC TV series with Benedict Cumberbatch. 13 episodes total

Ellie Miller

Another Cult Movie with Kim Basinger is " Nine 1/2 Weeks " with Mickey Rourke from 1986

Florian Meier

So now you have to watch "Chinatown" with Jack Nicholson from 1974 !! You will love it !! Another Great Danny DeVito Movie is "Throw Momma from the Train" with Billy Crystal from 1987

Florian Meier

Sustained!

Jason Dolan

LA Confidential was overshadowed by TITANIC!

Jason Dolan

I strongly strongly strongly believe that TBR and Sam need Edward Norton and "Primal Fear"1996" in their life That would make for an incredible reaction

Duncan

Yeah, baby, top shelf!! PS: "Bloody Christmas" was a real event by the way - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Christmas_(1951)
