War Movie Poll!

Help pick the War movie we will react to!

Please feel free to suggest other options in the comments for future polls!

NOTE: I have seen We Were Soldiers, so this would only be Sam's first time reaction.

*We received a ton suggestions on the last polls, but we are trying to keep the poll sizes more reasonable. We have noted all suggestions for future polls!

Comments

Add Enemy At The Gates to your war movie list - based on a true story about a (Ukrainian) sniper during the Battle Of Stalingrad in WW2. Amazing cast - Jude Law, Rachel Weisz, Ed Harris, Bob Hoskins

Neal Romanek

Doubt many would recommend this but Restrepo might be a good watch. Restrepo follows an Army unit fighting in Afghanistan, and shows what our most recent war was like for many of the soldiers there.

Forrest

They have watched Platoon. If you type it in their search bar it should pop up.

Forrest

Just watched Lawrence of Arabia this year for the first time. very impressive movie for its time. Stunning visuals!

Braden Derksen

Platoon would be a great reaction film. Directed by Oliver Stone and carries a lot of big names in the cast.

Tom Servo

Another classic war film is Gallipoli, one of the first movies by Peter Weir (who directed Master and Commander) - also one of Mel Gibson's first movies.

Neal Romanek

Agreed. 'Fury' was awful. It's really a terrible movie.

Thomas Boyette

'Thin Red Line' is one of only four films I've ever walked out of. What a POS.

Thomas Boyette

It will be interesting to see a young persons reaction and comments on Lawrence

ron clint

I never thought that I would call a war movie "beautiful" but that movie truly is beautiful!

Scott Kerr

I think they would enjoy The Great Escape. I'm hoping reactors get to it at some point.

Future Boy

Lawrence of Arabia is the fastest 3 hours 45 minutes you can sit through with a movie. Happy to see it tied for first right now and am hoping it wins because you can't deny a timeless classic. That wide, expansive on location desert cinematography in Technicolor!

Bert Taverner

Unfortunately, pay to react for a channel with 650 patrons is too impractical. If they exclusively did that with their 2 movies per week schedule, they'd only be able to do 104 reactions per year with the remaining 546 wondering when they'll get around to their requests.

Bert Taverner

I believe polls help the decision process, otherwise they’d be digging through thousands of recommendations every single time, but ultimately they get the final say and will watch whatever they want. Non-poll movies will sometimes fall into a theme though, (eg. Stallone movies.) Since YouTube isn’t their full-time jobs/career paths, these are just ways of making it easier for them to decide, but also, you may notice across many reaction channels that the more popular something is the more likely it will get a reaction because more people are likely to watch those videos. Sort of the opposite of the Blank Check approach, (if you like film and are not listening to the Blank Check podcast, ya need to get on it.) Still, be sure to recommend films in the comments sections because they do tend to comb through those for suggestions, and are pretty active in their community.

Damiana_Dimock

I don't know actually, I'm new here on patreon and saw the different polls so I assumed that's how it goes. If so we will probably never get to a lot of movies I'm talking about lol so thats why I was wondering I there was a pay to react option lol Either way I love this channel and they are my favorite reactors by far.

Jonathan Patrick

I voted for that one after I read this. I honestly never heard of any of 'em.

Alex

Yeah that would be cool. Is it really only movies that win the polls? I see a lot of stuff here that didn't win any polls.

Alex

I agree bc I certainly have a list of at least 30 to 40 films that are very good or great but probably would never win a poll here. But they are still great or overlooked. From seeing the movies that TBR and his wife like, I'm certain they would love my recommendations but I dont see most of them winning in these polls.

Jonathan Patrick

I think a pay to react plan would be a great option

YoureMrLebowski

I wish Casualties of War, Born on the Fourth of July and Thin Red Line got more respect from viewers. Glad to see Memphis Belle on the list and Thin Red Line but no respect in the voting 😒 Is there a pay to react option?

Jonathan Patrick

Very happy to see Lawrence of Arabia coming up toward first! Not there quite yet - but I'm hoping the votes continue to slide toward it. :)

Logan Kerlee

LOL! I will never not vote for Thin Red Line. 100% the best 🤷🏻‍♀️

Damiana_Dimock

Kelly's Heroes is the correct answer here! And how can you have any poll of war movies without including Patton?

The One True Chris

I have a hunch Vertigo might be next. Just a hunch.

Scott Kerr

I do have to recommend The Great Escape (1963) which is a war movie with Steve McQueen. And also Rescue Dawn (2001) which is a war film by Werner Herzog.

Scott Kerr

The Killing Fields is superb. It won the best actor & best cinematography Oscars. And amazing screenplay by Bruce Robinson.

Neal Romanek

Of course! The Great Escape! That should be top of the list really.

Neal Romanek

I think Come and See is something you kind of watch when you're ready. To call it a "war film" almost diminishes it (even though it's obviously a war film). Best Years Of Our Lives is so good.

Neal Romanek

And it's competing against David Lean's other masterpiece Bridge On The River Kwai, which he made just before Lawrence Of Arabia. I'm the world's biggest Lawrence fan, but I almost think it's a better idea to watch Bridge On The River Kwai first. In the same way you watch Hitchcock's Rear Window before you move on to Vertigo.

Neal Romanek

I've never seen Gettysburg but I heard it's good. Blue and the Gray sounds familiar.

Alex

I'd love to see Lawrence of Arabia win. It's my all time favorite film.

Donna Castellano

yeah it made way for a lot of movie tropes that handle ptsd, which is what I think this movie is more about. Still it is a good one!

MIke

those are good, i like some of the older made for tv spots like Gettysburg and im a sucker for the Blue and the Gray

MIke

I don’t know that much about war movies. I’m gonna trust your followers and watch along with ye. They make good choices.

PIG

I think "Born on the Fourth of July" is pretty great. I don't know if it's considered a "war movie," since the bulk of it has to do with the aftermath. But regardless of category, it seems to go overlooked by reactors, which is a shame.

WastedPo

Don't think films about the Korean War ever get reacted to - how about MASH? Or Manchurian candidate(ok a bit of a stretch to say its about the Korean War). Sam Fuller made a great low budget war film about it in The Steel Helmet. Also, just remembered Fires on on the Plain(1959) - its about a Japanese solider in the Philippines at the end of WWII. Incredibly bleak and haunting and gives you a different perspective - there were so many during WWII. Also The Killing Fields is pretty great(about Khmer Rouge in Cambodia). You are the best reactors out there because you are so thoughtful about many different types of films(most reactors can only handle a certain type and don't like to be challenged)

Birdie Num Num

I think Lawrence and Bridge sort of cancel each other out. It's hard to decide which one to pick(and added together they got 30% of the vote)

Birdie Num Num

Have you two seen Nolan's "Dunkirk" yet? Can we have that on the next poll?

Erich Bomke

Yes but many good war films depict redeeming acts and themes of brotherhood (Band of Brothers, etc.). Fury has no heart.

Catherine LW

War IS ugly

db

They might be saving The Patriot for 4th of July.

David Crabtree

Fury is an ugly, mean spirited movie. Ugh, the fact that it’s beating masterpieces like Lawrence of Arabia and Bridge on the River Kwai is depressing. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Catherine LW

I haven't heard of most of these. The Patriot is a really good American Revolution movie. "North and South" with Patrick Swayze is a very good mini series about the Civil War. It's separated into 3 seasons, one for each book (it's based on novels)

Alex

The theory does not fall apart. They have exceptions to every theory. I've been following movie reaction channels for a while now and it is always the same with the polls. Like I said in the earlier post, It's just the reality of the internet, most people vote for the movie they know of, and most people on the internet are of a younger generation, nothing wrong with that, but in order to get some of the older movies voted on, I think the polls should be done by a date range or release year.

Allister Fiend

JoJo Rabbit is a great (black)comedy war movie

christopher brown

Bridge on the River Kwai is certainly a classic as is Lawrence. They were made in a time of epic sprawling widescreen presentations, and each one should be required viewing regardless of your age.

ron clint

Your theory falls apart at the fact that A Fistful of Dollars from 1964 is clearly winning the Western poll As is always stated on these reaction pages time and time again, there are only so many slots available per week and everybody has different tastes, nobody is right or wrong in their opinions and everyone is of a different age,so it would not be appropriate to cater polls to certain age brackets It is just a simple case of being patient and in time they will get to review lots of different content

Duncan

UGGG...Like others have said, These polls always have the newest film in the lead, Fury is not the best movie on this list by a long shot, yet it will win because it is the newest film on the list. Maybe the polls should be broken down to decades or release years. Maybe if enough of us post that Obi-wan-kenobi is in Lawrence Of Arabia, it will win! also, I really like Kelly's Hero's and think it's great, especially if want a war movie that has a good amount of humor in it. This post is not meant to trash this channel, it is just a reality of the internet and the age of most of the people on it. You two have one of the best reaction channels on youTube, keep up the great work.

Allister Fiend

I went with Memphis Belle because I haven’t watched a reaction to it yet and you guys could be the first. I also see that Fury has an early lead and it certainly gets views on YouTube.

Mark M

I second adding Patton for sure, as a secondary suggestion not sure if pow centered films count but i have a couple that are good if a bit old. The great escape('63), Stalag 17('53) and Papillon('73) lol wow all of them are a decade apart :O

MIke

River Kwai, Lawrence and Thin Red Line are all you need here.

Bert Taverner

"Come and See" is on my list to watch.

Mr. Writhms

Nice timing with this poll. I recently started watching older war movies I’ve never seen and I came up with a few new favorites: “The Guns of Navarone” (1961) “The Dirty Dozen” (1967) “Patton” (1970) And a couple of fairly recent favorites of mine: “Three Kings” (1999) "U571" (2000)

Mr. Writhms

I guess Come And See no longer makes the cut. Makes every other war movie look like a walk in the park in comparison. Also, I know it would never win a poll in probably any category, but maybe you should throw in Best Years of Our Lives in a future poll. It deals with veterans returning home from war just about better than any film ever has. And won a ton of Oscars etc.

Birdie Num Num

I like polls that are even more focused around release dates. It gives everything a fairer chance, and usually means there's something for everyone in each poll. Like "1950s dramas," "1970s comedies," "1990s horror," etc.

Future Boy

Most reactor channel polls, some channels more than others, skew to more recent films / younger audience. One reactor channel, when they were reacting to "Casablanca" (1942), brought up a salient point, that people only want to see films they've been exposed to by their parents or peers. So, to them, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck, etc. are the epitome of the acting craft. I once took a Film Appreciation class in college. Obviously, the teacher would show films in the class. After a couple of weeks, some students groaned, "Is this one going to be in color?" It never occurred to them a black and white film can be just as interesting as one filmed in color.

Miles E Coburn

Because it's from with the last ten years.

Patrick Flanagan

ugh, FURY is terrible.

Patrick Flanagan

So many Great War films from the 40’s—maybe consider one of those too. After all you can then see the movies that all the others are stealing from 😀

Michael Soukup

Really don't understand why people like Fury so much.

Joel P

You should divide up the polls every month by pre-1969 and post-1969 so that a movie like Lawrence of Arabia actually has a chance.

Tyler Foster

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, War Horse

Stephanie

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, Top Gun, Pearl Harbor

David Crabtree

Pearl Harbor (2001) and Top Gun (1986) MOVIES MUST WATCH and masterpiece movies

James Bate

I must've missed that poll. Very happy to learn that it did well, before. :)

Logan Kerlee

Bridge Over the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia are directed by the same man the great David Lean. Lawrence is in my top 3 films of all time and Bridge top 10. You guys should just watch them outside of your war poll. So many Oscar’s between the two.

Michael Rhine

It was top 3 last war poll! Definitely has a good chance :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Holy shit, I am asking everybody to consider voting for Lawrence of Arabia! That film is excellent! This is the first time that I've seen it as an option on anybody's Patreon vote. That movie HAS TO BE SEEN! It's a top notch film.

Logan Kerlee

Crimson Tide (1995) with Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman, Top Gun (1986) with Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer. Both directed by Tony Scott, brother of Ridley. Love you guys!

Ellie Miller
