Great. And the Karate Kid remake (reboot?) with Jackie Chan is really nicely done - well worth watching.

@Mark M ...Actually, it was Bill Conti (the music composer) who came up with the idea of ending Rocky on a triumphant fanfare note with the freeze frame, and so when the director brought him back to score this film, they used the same formula.

its got nothing to do with karate kid(which was great btw) but have you guys ever seen, A knight's tale? with Heath Ledger? its a fantastic movie that if you have not seen it should really put it on a poll i bet it would win and you would love it!

Ah, ANOTHER integral part of my childhood—I watched it and talked my parents into signing me up for martial arts classes that summer…and then fell off my bike and broke my arm, which healed up fully just in time to go back to elementary school. 😒😁 The second movie has a definite cheese factor but as a child of the 80s I love it. The third…well, there’s a reason they stopped. DO, however, watch the series—-it’s like you took the show 90210 and made it action-packed, and I have frequently laughed out loud watching it, and that seldom happens with other shows; for me it hits just the right mix of nostalgia and poking good-natured fun at the original material.

The second Karate Kid film actually is a really great movie. It also covers something much more serious than a simple Karate tournament. I won't say what it is, but it's really a great movie!

An absolute classic. I tear up every time during Miyagi's drunk tribute to his dead wife and child.

This is my favourite reaction ever. It was so much fun watching along with you guys! The very first VHS tape my family owned in the 80s was The Karate Kid. I watched it dozens of times with my brother (and dad). I still have that same VHS copy today as a memento. This is the most fun I've had watching it since those days as a little kid. Thanks so much for what you do!
I love part 2 almost as much as the first, so can't wait for you to get to it. The third one is much weaker, but still fun if you love the characters, and essential if you want to watch Cobra Kai (which I think you'll love).

No spoilers, but the original script had some scenes after the tournament, but they decided to end right on the high note. The scenes not shot for the ending became the first couple of scenes in part 2.

This film is amazing. I'm so glad that the both of you enjoyed this! This one 100% hits me in the feels. I was crying at the end of it all. I love Mr. Miyagi and Daniel's relationship.
The sequels though.. yikes. HUGE yikes. I do NOT recommend them. xD Though, if ya'll are up for it, cool. I'll go ahead and give 'em a watch with ya. :P

Leaving this as a separate comment because as you know, if you try to edit on here, Patreon sometimes eats comments. I kind of dropped a thread in my last comment when it comes to the third Karate Kid film, out of the original three films. While I do think the third film is skippable if you aren't going to watch Cobra Kai, I should have made it more clear that if you do watch that show, then you do have to see the third film. More importantly, while the third film, as I said, is not as good as the first two, Cobra Kai does change the equation quite a lot. Cobra Kai takes that movie and makes it ten times better, and without seeing it, some of Cobra Kai won't make as much sense. The second film, you absolutely should watch anyway, but you have to watch it to appreciate a lot of Cobra Kai.

This reaction made my heart glad. This is one of my favorite films, and I'm so glad you guys reacted to it.
A couple of answers to questions or points of confusion you guys had.
In the scene after Mr. Miyagi saved him and Miyagi refused to go with him to deal with Kreese, Daniel got a little mad at him. Daniel got mad because, although Miyagi saved him and he didn't do anything wrong, his interfering could have potentially made things a lot worse for Daniel. Daniel's line, "Oh, thanks a lot, pal, now I gotta carry your weight too," says it all. He was afraid the Cobra Kais would take what Mr. Miyagi did to them out on Daniel, and they likely would have, if Miyagi hadn't gone with Daniel to the dojo and had it set up so that the boys had to leave him alone until the tournament. Also, Daniel couldn't have gone alone and handled Kreese on his own. He already had a target on his back, but Miyagi put a bigger one on him. So to Daniel, it probably felt like he "got involved," and now was just leaving him to deal with it alone. That's why when Daniel said, "I gotta carry your weight too," Miyagi suddenly changed his mind and said he'd go. He realized the position he put Daniel in, and that he had to fix it. I didn't get that part when I was younger and I first saw this, but after I got older and saw it a few times, it clicked what was happening there.
About why Ali was mad at him after the restaurant scene. Johnny made sure to lay on on her where Daniel could see it, but from his vantage point, it could have looked like she was reciprocating. He didn't see her hit him, and he didn't pick up on Johnny setting that up to look a certain way. Because the scene ended with him on the floor with the food spilled on him and everyone laughing at him, and then the next thing we see is him showing up at Miyagi's place, we can assume Daniel just walked away. They didn't have the date, but more importantly, he didn't talk to her about the kiss or ask her what was going on there. His just leaving without giving her a chance to explain probably felt sort of like he was blaming her. His reaction at Golf 'N Stuff later suggests that he did on some level. Essentially, it would have felt to her like he was accusing her of cheating. I don't think it's that simple. To be clear, I don't think Daniel was doing that whole typical male thing in the 80s, where a guy forces himself on a woman and it's her fault. You have to remember, he didn't see the whole picture. He didn't know she wasn't into it. Ali's friend, as crappy as she is, did have a point. When Daniel said "She hit him? Why didn't she say anything?" and her friend said, "She shouldn't have to, should she?" She's right. Looking at it from a woman's point of view, Daniel should have trusted her enough to believe she wouldn't cheat on him, that she wouldn't go around kissing her ex when she's supposed to be dating him. He shouldn't have just assumed. That said, I can see both sides. I see why Ali was pissed off, but I also see why Daniel left, because with everyone laughing at him, it was humiliating, and it must have looked like she was kissing her ex when she was supposed to going on a date with him, in part, because they were dancing when he walked in, and it didn't look like she was being forced to dance with him.
One additional note, as to why Ali was dancing with him, and why she didn't just leave. You have to understand, it was the 80s. It was a different time. Her parents sort of put her in that position, and back then, a woman didn't make a scene. She was expected to just go with it. She was being polite and doing what her parents and everyone else there would have expected of her. Back then, there was still a little of that "lie back and think of England" sort of mentality from older times in social consciousness. That actually means that Ali hitting Johnny was very progressive and unusual, especially for someone from a rich family, where you are expected to always be polite and not make a fuss. The thing is, Daniel wouldn't have been completely aware of that, because he isn't from that sort of upbringing, and he isn't female. To him, it would have just looked like she was on board.
Something you might find interesting. There are people who think that Daniel is the bully in this film, and Johnny is the hero. Yes, really. It's a thing. I didn't get it either, but apparently, the reasoning behind it is that Daniel took Johnny's girl, and by that, he started the whole thing. Also, because he soaked Johnny in the bathroom on Halloween. I respect people's opinions, but that mentality always struck me as being very alarming. It's very victim blamey. One, Ali made it absolutely clear she wasn't with Johnny anymore, and wanted nothing to do with him. Daniel did not "take" her from him, and to say he did makes her sound like property, and completely overlooks her choice not to be with him, and to be with Daniel. Ali chose Daniel. To be fair, Daniel was not a complete angel in this film. He shouldn't have soaked Johnny, and he shouldn't have goaded them the day after the confrontation with Kreese, when he was asking him how they all were. But Johnny and his entire gang were consistantly ganging up on and terrifying him. It's a human thing to finally have had enough and want to do something about it. There is a huge difference between knocking someone down a hill or attacking them, and soaking them with water, It doesn't make Daniel right, but it doesn't make him the bully, either. The concept that Daniel is the bully obvuscates what Johnny was doing, makes it sound like what he did was acceptable, and places the blame on the victim. It promotes bullying culture and opens the door wide for toxic masculinity.
As to the other films, and Cobra Kai. There are three original films, one additional one added to this series (The Next Karate Kid, with Hillary Swank), and one kind of sort of reboot/remake starring Jackie Jan. Discounting Cobra Kai for a second, my opinion would be to watch the second film and skip the others. Karate Kid 3 is just okay to me. It's not bad, but it's not nearly as good as this or part two, and it isn't necessary to watch it--UNLESS you are going to watch Cobra Kai. To me, there is some good stuff in it, and it has its merits, but the story is a lot weaker. The fourth film (with Swank) is...well, it's one of those movies that you really want to like, but it just doesn't quite get there. There are some great scenes, the music is great, and Swank and Miyagi are good in it, but it kind of misses the mark on the charm and heart. For Cobra Kai, so far, it isn't necessary to watch it, and I've seen all four seasons. And as to the remake, I'd give it a pass. I love Jackie, and he is always good, but even he can't save that one. Again, for Cobra Kai, so far, it's skippable. Cobra Kai, on the other hand. Oh. My Effing God. You guys have got to watch that show.
I'll tell you something about that damn show. LOL I put off watching it for so long, because I thought it was going to ruin the films for me and totally suck ass. I finally watched it, and wow. I was so stupid for putting it off. I am a massive movie and tv show buff, and that show is the only show I have ever seen that doesn't have an even so so episode. Few other shows have gotten me this excited. The writing is genius, guys. it's unreal. You have to see it. Just saying. :D

Yeah it was Miyagi (Pat Morita) who was the always the heart of these movies. He's like Yoda with a real back story. The 442nd Regimental Combat Team were fuckin heroes.

First is still my favorite. KK2 is supposed to take place on Okinawa but was filmed in Hawaii.
Hawaii doesn't look one damn bit like Okinawa. That's annoyed me ever since i first saw it for some reason which dropped it behind the original

John G Avildsen directed both Karate Kid and Rocky. Maybe it was his idea to send audiences home on a euphoric high.

I totally agree - the original movie ends very abruptly, but I guess it was because it was following the formula a lot of sport movies of the time period did (Rocky, etc. - underdog going through all the training and ultimately triumphs in spite of the odds and that's kinda it, as far as the plot usually goes for those movies lol). I have to say, though, Karate Kid 2 is definitely my favorite of the franchise, hands down! I can't wait for you guys to get to it. :D

Growing up I dealt with a lot of bullying. So for that reason alone this movie has always been an all time favorite film, it had so much heart and it was a coming of age story about an underdog. When I started showing my nieces and nephew movies, this movie was one of them. Now that the kids are older I consider it one of their favorites too.

As a child of the 80s, I don't want to be "that guy" but I really feel like a lot of movies in the 80s were just better. So much more heart. Granted, also a lot of coke-fueled nonsense too, but still.
