Escape from New York (1981) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Escape from New York (1981) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Carpenter really seems to be drawn to bleak/nihilistic themes. My kind of guy. Love how well you are able to pick up clues within the films. Makes for a great watch-along.

James Rogers

Brain was played by the actor who played Brett in "Alien" - Harry Dean Stanton.

Miles E Coburn

After seeing the film in the theater, I read the authorized novelization. So, a couple of clarifications: 1) Yeah, the President was a cowardly son of a bitch. He was the way he was at the end of the film all the way through the book. 2) The tape was an explanation of how the U.S. adapted nuclear fusion to use in a weapon. The U.S. was going to blackmail China and the Soviet Union into surrendering.

Miles E Coburn

It was a lot of fun watching this one with you guys. I'd recommend John Carpenter's second film, the one he did before Halloween, Assault On Precinct 13 for your next Carpenter movie. It's a great thriller, not long at all and filled with plenty to react to. There's a remake from more recent years, but it comes off as more of a run of the mill, typical movie. The original stands out for reasons I won't spoil.

Finally getting to watch this full reaction! I thought it was funny they asked the same question I thought, why Manhattan? Sure it's an island but so is Kansas. Kansas is actually a land locked state but if you've ever been there, it might as well be an archipelago πŸ˜‚

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Such a great action movie!. Haha, I was almost sure you guys would've noticed that the president was played by Donald Pleasance, who was Dr Loomis in Halloween, just with no facial hair lol. Cabbie was played by Ernest Borgnine, an already legendary actor at the time. He was such a great addition to the movie. John Carpenter just did not miss back in the day! So many good movies. I hope y'all react to The Fog, Christine and Big Trouble In Little China eventually. Awesome Carpenter movies.

Lee Brennan

Big Trouble in Little China

Another movie that's like Escape From New York that's pretty bad ass to is No Escape it has Ray Liotta

Anakin Starkiller

If you think that Snake's accent sounds like Clint Eastwood you would be right . That would be John's idol in fact he also put in Lee Van Cleef because he loves the No Name Western trilogy so much. So he told Kurt Russell I want Snake to be like Clint Eastwood in The Good The Bad and The Ugly and Kurt being able to spot on Clint he did it πŸ™‚

Anakin Starkiller

Have you two seen Big Trouble in Little China before? Carpenter and Russell

Erich Bomke

Hi Sam, Assault on Precinct 13 is a great Carpenter movie.

Andy G

Oh and you`ve seen the guy playing the Pres before, he was Dr Loomis in Halloween movies

Andy Farmer

"One of them has a much bigger reach" Hahaaa great line Sam

Andy Farmer

Oh man I forgot Brain was played by Parker from Alien

Andy Farmer

it was a influence for Metal Gear Solid and in MGS 2 Snake uses a fake name, Pliskin

Terry Lee

Also, you guys need to watch AIR FORCE ONE as soon as possible, which ALSO takes place in... yep, you guessed it... 1997

Jason Dolan

I'm pretty sure this movie takes place the same year as PREDATOR 2

Jason Dolan

"The Thing" is my 1st fav. And I suggest "The Fog" next. 😁

Mr. Writhms

Ooh thank you! Curious which is your 1st favorite?! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes! Which would you recommend next? -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Definitely one the best action films ever made and the best action film Kurt Russell has ever made. It influenced games and other film and series.

Anakin Starkiller

I feel so old. No one recognized Ernest Borgnine. πŸ˜‚ (the cabbie).

Catherine LW

loved this movie as a kid, and loved the Metal Gear games. I always wondered if Metal Gears Snake was the same as this movies Snake. if you google was Metal Gear inspired by Escape from New York the Imdb answer is Yes it was but was also inspired by a few other movies as well. This is the character I always see Kurt Russell as and I call him Snake in everything I see him in.

Christopher Plucinski

Oh this is glorious! Escape’ is my 2nd favorite John Carpenter movie. I actually own the music score to this one. I do believe Solid Snake from the video game was ripped off-- err, I mean BASED on Snake Plissken. He even had an eye patch. I hope you get to my other favorite Carpenter flicks. β€œThe Fog” (1980) β€œChristine” (1983) β€œStarMan” (1984) β€œVampires” (1998)

Mr. Writhms

brilliant reaction guys, definitely more John Carpenter movies
