Mulholland Drive (2001) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Mulholland Drive (2001) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Watching this with you guys to honour David Lynch. He passed away yesterday, January 15th 2025, at the age of 78. One of the great artist of his time. Can't recommend his films Blue Velvet (1996) and Lost Highway (1997) enough. As well as his seminal tv work for Twin Peaks, which he co-created with Mark Frost.

David Lynch never really reveals any meaning to his movies... you have to figure it out... or not... just experience it...

My interpretation is diane won the dance competition ... went to hollywood with big dreams. at the beginning we see the pov of diane going to sleep.... so the whole first sequence of her and rita is just her dreaming... when rita sleeps theres the diner scene of the two guys talking ... that is a dream within a dream... according to dream logic science ... it's a recurring dream of always seeing the man with the face behind the wall... because diane saw that dude in the diner it was in her dream... just like random people we see appear in our dreams... but this is also a commentary on the "Hollywood Dream" ... that you go to LA and make it big... but in reality, mob type goons control the creatives in the process...adam the director has no real power ,it's kind of a commentary on the studio system. But yeah... Diane did not make it... fell in love with a more successful actress and when dumped she couldn't take all the rejection ... plus she probably was crazy... but so she had her killed... and was tormented by guilt and killed herself... the early scene with the elderly couple represent the "Old Hollywood" the glamour and all that golden era and they welcome her ... and they just smile and smile like the old hollywood films... adams mom coco appears in dianes dream because she was nice to her and such a strong personality... so the "Hollywood dream" is not real for Adam nor Diane... well.. since Adam decided to play nice I guess he does get to live the dream... but it's a film of dreams on many levels...

I am 2 years late but man are you right. It is a magical show, and fire walk with me is one of the best films I have ever seen.

I always found Lynch to be too clever for his own good. He loves his avant garde film making and being weird simply for the sake of being weird. Strip away all of the strangeness from his films and you're left with some facile symbolism that a high schooler can figure out and paper thin plots. He's one of these "auteurs" that film professors love to drone on about. Overrated by half.

Thanks for watching this film. It will, I think, grow on you over time. It and Twin Peaks Season 3 are two of the loveliest, most surprising, and best directed films (TP was entirely directed by Lynch, and is like an 18-hour movie) in my lifetime. Some great companion pieces to Mulholland Dr. are Sunset Boulevard and, especially, Hitchcock's Vertigo. If you watch the latter, you'll see the connections.

Wasn’t a fan of Dune but everything else he’s done is worth watching. Lost Highway, Elephant Man, Wild at Heart, Inland Empire, etc...

Arya Amirsoleimani

Dune is also great.

Great reaction. Lynch is my all time favorite director, and Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, and Blue Velvet are 3 of my favorites. His style is unmatched and all his movies leave you thinking about them long after you’ve finished watching. Repeat viewings are very rewarding. Maybe the next one you guys react to should be Blue Velvet since it’s a far more linear story. And eventually if you guys have time, Twin Peaks is a must see. It’s my favorite TV show ever.

Arya Amirsoleimani

Now I wish I wish I skipped this movie, made me feel uneasy the whole time!

Terry Lee

Blue Velvet next please!

Shehab Dawoud

Naomi Watts absolutely kills it in this film. Her performance only improves with each viewing for me. And I've read that she too suffered frustrations and depression early in her acting career in Hollywood so those experiences likely elevated her performance. Just an amazing performance.

Mitchell Smilie

Seriously, I cannot recommend “Twin Peaks” enough. It’s something so special and unique; there’s never really been anything else like it on television. And with only three seasons (the first season has only seven episodes) it’s a relatively small commitment, and one I don’t think any other reaction channels have dove into yet.

Thanks so much for your support, Gerald! -Sam

We haven't seen it yet, and would love to! So many great series to watch! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Absolutely terrified!! Naomi Watts' was incredible! That is hard to believe that she hadn't gotten something sooner with that performance! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Agreed! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh wow! That makes much more sense! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha!

TBR Schmitt

Yeah I know, but for some reason kept forgetting and pressing enter. Probably tired or lazy :)

Steeleye 2112

Just in case you're not aware, you can start a new line with shift+enter, so you needn't spread your comment across 5 posts :)

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Oooooooh, I TOTALLY forgot about the film! Yes yes yes, I definitely recommend that too!

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

NO WAY. You guys pick the best stuff. I’ll stick on Patreon for a while I think.

PIG

Are you kidding me? Season 3 is like, the best thing ever!

Pudungurte

“Twin Peaks” is definitely a must-watch series. The mid-section of Season 2 is certainly a low-point, but I say to stick it out because everything that comes afterwards (the film Fire Walk With Me and Season 3) is simply incredible.

Nick of Time

What a masterpiece. The scene in the diner, where the guy is describing his nightmare, is one of my favourites of all time. That actor freakin' NAILED that scene... holy shit. And Sam your reaction to the jump scare at the end of it was absolutely priceless. Pure. Freakin'. Terror. :) It's no wonder that Naomi Watts' career EXPLODED after this film. It's one of the greatest overall performances I've ever seen. Crazy to think that she hadn't really done anything substantial before it, even though she'd been auditioning for 10 years! If you're interested, you might enjoy this interview with Naomi Watts & David Lynch where they talk about the making of the film (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_BjbaBEyb4). David Lynch's hair is the best!! Btw, the first season of Twin Peaks is an absolute must-see. Personally, I'd suggest to skip the rest but I'm guessing that many others would disagree :)

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

The whole first part with Betty is her final dream as she lies dying and is basically a fantasy of how she wanted her life to go and once you realize this it's the most heartbreaking story. All of Betty's talent and optimism is what Diane wanted to be rather than the bitter, lonely person she became. All the elements in the dream are taken from actual things in her real life but extrapolated as we all do in dreams.

Steeleye 2112

Diane Selwyn is who the story is about. She came to Hollywood fell in love and got dumped and didn't make it as an actress. In desperation she arranged to have Camilla killed and in remorse killed herself.

Steeleye 2112

OK Spoilers ahead for anyone who want's to make up their own mind.

Steeleye 2112

Also Naomi Watt's performance is extraordinary, I don't think I've ever felt as sorry for any fictional character more than I did for Diane.

Steeleye 2112

Agreed. Wild At Heart may be my personal favorite Lynch film that doesn’t take place in Twin Peaks. 😊

Nick of Time

Don't want to spoil anything in case anyone hasn't seen this yet but I find it his most accessible. We find out about the main character's desires and fears without realizing it and the end is just the tragic realization of what we thought we'd discovered. One of my favourite films of all time.

Steeleye 2112

Wild at Heart and Blue Velvet are probably more accessible, but still very Lynchian. And Nicholas Cage in Wild at Heart can't be missed.

Chris

It’s worth noting that work on “Mulholland Dr.” began as a pilot for a series on Showtime, but that deal fell through so Lynch used what he’d shot and made it a standalone film. That’s why there are so many loose ends, storylines and characters that are introduced but don’t really go anywhere.

Nick of Time

😂 I did that very thing when I got the notification.

Nick of Time

Thanks for the info.

MrLoall

Just realized Full Length isn't up yet, that should be up sooner! It is just exporting and then we'll upload to YouTube to post here! -Sam
