It was so ahead of its time. Meta wasn't a thing until Scream blew up. If this had come out after that it would have KILLED. But in '93 people just wanted standard Arnie and took the meta stuff as an insult to the movies they loved instead of an affectionate homage. Now it's regarded as a classic.

I remember seeing this when it came out in theaters and loving it! Glad you guys got a chance to watch this. Charles Dance (Benedict) is a terrific villain (and will forever be immortalized for me as Tywin Lannister). You need to react to Alien3 to see him play an actual sympathetic character.
Be sure to check out Eraser and Raw Deal, two more terrific Arnold films. Next up you guys need to work through Stallone and Willis's filmography to keep the action fandom alive!

You might not have realized it ( or I might have missed it), but Last Action Hero, Predator, The Hunt for Red October and Die Hard were all directed by the same man: John McTiernan. All of these films were made between 1987 and 1993. Three of them were major box office successes. All of them fondly remembered and he still has a couple more fun films in his resume. He directed Die Hard with a Vengeance (the third film and best sequel), the Viking tale The 13th Warrior and a remake of the heist/romance film The Thomas Crown Affair.
McTiernan was a powerhouse whose career was unfortunately cut short by legal trouble. The shooting of his 2001 film remake of Rollerball was a nightmare and he had a unscrupulous producer. McTiernan hired a PI to spy on his producer and at the end of all that quagmire he ended up unknowingly lying to an FBI agent which was used in court against him and he was sentenced to a year in prison. He hasn't directed a film since 2003. Although he has supposedly been working on a major film for the past couple of years but with the pandemic and all who knows in what state the project is.

If I remember right, which who knows on that, part of the reason it bombed is they marketed it more as an action movie than as a comedy parody, So everybody was like, "wtf is this shit?"

Oh, Charles Dance is also pretty great villain in The Golden Child, with Eddie Murphy. I think you guys would like that film too.

He's the screenwriter, along with the author of the actual novel. I'm sure his experience with this film didn't hurt adapting Rady Player One for the screen.

There are still.some quality Arnold movies yet to see. Escape Plan (2013) w/ Sylvester Stallone and Raw Deal (1986) are two that come to mind that I'm not sure you've done yet on the channel. Raw Deal is a classic 80s action movie that's a lot of fun and Escape Plan has the two biggest and best action icons, later in their careers, trapped in prison together. Definitely both worth checking out!!!

This movie bombed at the box office and it is a shame. I remember seeing it in theaters when I was like 10 and I loved it. Definitely a underrated classic.

This film just invokes cozy, warm feeling from the childhood, watching movies on tv and later discussing them with classmates in school :D One of these movies that don't do good when released and then become cult classics :)

One of the writers of this story wrote "Ready Player One" which is another story about people entering another dimension of reality.

I remember when this first came out. It BOMBED at the cinema. Nobody liked it and so nobody saw it. I never bothered to see it, nor did any of my friends.
Glad you guys liked it, though. Maybe I'll finally get around to watching it myself too :)

The scene where he is running around the premiere, and Jean Claude is being interviewed and he runs up to the bar...is that Nicolas Cage in the background or just someone that looks like him?

I think you might have seen the last of the "good" Arnold films (yeah, I know it's subjective)... maybe "Jingle All the Way."
That'd be awesome if this movie eventually turned you on to Ingmar Bergman films. Oddly enough, I saw this in theaters and had no idea what The Seventh Seal was (though it was also referenced in the second Bill and Ted film), but when I got older, Bergman ended up being my favorite director though depressing swedish films probably don't make for good reaction films.

YES!! The concept of the film is just so brilliant and fun, how could anyone dislike it? So quotable too. As a kid, the cherry on top for me was that a character had my name in a movie 😆 Anyway, so glad you both enjoyed it!

The 40% on Rotten Tomatoes, and even the 47% audience score is indicative of this film being sort of ahead of its time, and maybe still ahead of its time. Last Action Hero came before The Truman Show and Being John Malkovich. Just a truly innovative film of its genre that just didn't connect with audiences who were shell shocked from Jurassic Park that summer. Last Action Hero was quickly chased from theaters by the 1-2-3 punch of The Firm, In the Line of Fire, and The Fugitive, not to mention Sleepless in Seattle, Free Willy and Robin Hood Men in Tights. So its box office was disappointing in comparison to the expectations driven by the success of Terminator 2 which this movie was following up. Tough shoes to fill. But yay us, we got this classic.

You guys blew it! You were supposed to react to Ingmar Bergman's THE SEVENTH SEAL before you watched this! :P
Also, I forgot Ian McKellen was in this. Might have been one of his first high profile American films.

Eraser is an Arnold movie that I haven't seen since the mid 90's. It was a good action movie at the time.
