Kevin Jarre, who wrote Glory also wrote Tombstone.

Oh, and one funny thing: Bob Gunton, who played the corrupt warden in Shawshank, is also the corrupt Major that Shaw goes to to have his company transferred to combat duty.

I feel like I've been saying this about every film but this is an all time fave. I still own it on VHS and used to listen to the soundtrack when studying. Though it was a little difficult, when I'd get to the tracks for the sad and difficult scenes.

you have to remember (from the beginning of the film and the fort battle, that they still were using Napoleonic War style ( lines of men forming 100 feet from each other) was that back then they used muskets with a ball and hard to hit people, but towards the middle of the war, they started to use the mini ball(58 caliber) and were more accurate and did more damage. That's why they had to amputate so many limbs. Using black solders in the south with Sherman, but also in the west in Nashville and Vicksburg.

I haven't seen this movie since I was in high school. Nice reaction, guys, and thanks to everyone for voting on this one. Such a powerful film, and one of the great Edward Zwick's finest next to Blood Diamond and The Siege.

Steven Montano

Another amazing reaction as always.. Now you need to do Gettysburg. Its long, but well worth it. Did you notice the colonel that he had to blackmail to go fight was the warden from Shawshank? That guy always has his hands dirty.

I know a lot of the military protocols that seem harsh really are a necessity (not the flogging but...), the fraternization rule exists for a very important reason, fraternizing = favoritism in the eyes of stressed out pissed off exhausted recruits/soldiers, it's poison to a unit. If your commanding officer orders you to do something that's definitely dangerous, you don't want to be wondering if you got picked because it was your turn, or because he likes someone else more than you 😂

Wow thank you for the long and thoughtful comment! Them standing so close together is literal insanity! I couldn’t believe it either. I think Morgan always steels the show haha but definitely Denzel and Thomas too! I’m so happy we got to see Wesley again! Such a touching film! -Sam

Great movie. i love everyone's performance. especially Denzel Washington's. He is my personal favorite actor. if its okay i wanted to request some of his movies. These are my favorite of his: Training Day , Man on Fire and American Gangster.

Carlos Hurtado

Great reaction to a fantastic movie!! I'm so glad you guys reacted to and enjoyed this film! Having said that, I highly recommend the movie "October Sky" with Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Cooper. Not a war film, but an incredibly powerful drama set in the late 1950's in a West Virginia coal mining town. I don't want to give the plot away, but I think you two would love it!

One of my favourite movies of all time. How nice it is to be able to watch it again, but through fresh eyes! :) I first saw this when I was very, very young. What I remember shocking me more than anything else was the absolute INSANITY of opposing troops standing 40 ft apart, in perfect lines, firing at each other. The fortitude required to fight like that... I can't imagine... and then, of course, there's the inevitable shouting of "Charge!" *shudder* Mathew Broderick is known for his comedic roles, of course, but I think he did great in this!! Wesley too! Still, Morgan and Denzel (and Thomas and the stuttering guy) obviously steal the film. The soundtrack, composed by James Horner and performed by the Harlem Boys Choir, is absolutely phenomenal. The final 3-4 minutes of their siege on Fort Wagner, with O Fortuna playing, is probably my favourite cinematic sequence of all time. Finally, I don't know why, but I find myself oddly fixated on the brief moment of Shaw blowing the sand out of his revolver before making his final push up towards the fort. It's such a small detail, and in the midst of such chaos it hardly seems important... but I love that they put that in there. If I'm being honest, I had tears in my eyes for almost the entire film. There's so much to love here. Thanks to everyone who voted for this. edit: Should anyone be interested, you can purchase a copy of Shaw's letters online (https://www.amazon.com/Blue-Eyed-Child-Fortune-Letters-Colonel/dp/0820321745/)

This movie is so amazing. I saw it the first time in a high school US history class lol, this one I remember won Denzel Washington a deserved Oscar. The fact that it's a true story though, one of the few times a war could be called righteous.

FINALLY! I can't wait to watch.
