A Clockwork Orange (1971) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

A Clockwork Orange (1971) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

So this if the first movie I've watched along with a reaction that I hadn't seen before, and what an experience! I had wanted to see it for years because it was a huge gap in my viewing history, but I just never got around to it. And I've gotta' say, Kubrick did not disappoint. So ahead of his time, both technically and with subject matter. Malcolm McDowell was incredible, the script was top-notch, what a watch. And you guys made it all the more enjoyable. Thanks for the reaction!

Gary Giaimo

Droogs Don't Run! I love this flick. Malcolm McDowell is awesome. He also plays Caligula and in Tank Girl.

Faron Henderson

Thing is, some did take it seriously and did copycat crimes. ☹️

Catherine LW

Such a disturbing classic

Ken Veader

No, they said in the reaction they were doing that because of how much they had to censor it for youtube.

Nicotti

This seems to be mistakenly unlocked for $5 patrons, FYI.

Tyler Foster

Great reaction, both of you, although this is one of the hardest films to watch IMO. It’s brilliant but I saw it many years ago and was so disturbed that I never wanted to watch it again! I also read the book, which was even worse! I’m such a wimp that when the violent parts were shown, I’d look away from my tv and watch your blurred version! 🙈

Catherine LW

Yes! Great catch - and Kubrick being clever again.

Neal Romanek

Barry Lyndon is superb. But again, it's got that Kubrick twist - it's a gorgeous epic movie about a guy who is just a low-class jerk.

Neal Romanek

Dr strangelove is a viddy horrorshow palate cleanser for the old rassoodocks O my brother.

J.C.

In my early twenties I dressed up every year for Halloween at work. I thought it was a brilliant idea to dress up as Alex one year. I cringe now just thinking about how inappropriate that was! Ahhhh to be young and dumb. I also had to keep explaining who I was so I eventually told them only cool people would know so I didn’t have to explain I was dressed as a raping, violent psychopath.

Thank you TBR & Sam for your great content, amazing reactions and always insightful reviews. Love your genuine excitement and the hard work placed on the editing. Just know that you can not always please everybody or react to ALL the suggested movies. So don't mind occasional rants and just keep up the great work. BTW, what a classy response from you guys to the complainer.

Greg & Lilian

Like you recognized Keith David, did you guys recognize Alex from his stint on COMMUNITY?

Jason Dolan

Excellent pick, both of you! It's definitely a lighter film when compared to a number of the others. It's still quite dark! Just not in the over the top or in your face way that this one obviously was.

Logan Kerlee

I didn't realize that he played Darth Vader! (though, now that I think about it my ex may've mentioned that when she introduced the movie to me so many years ago)

Logan Kerlee

Spot on with the Singing In The Rain! I can't help but imagine it whenever that song is played nearby me.

Logan Kerlee

I don't think that I knew that! Neat film fact! :)

Logan Kerlee

Just got finished watching. Holy moley, I enjoyed that reaction. I first watched this when I was in high school. I watched it during the summer before my Junior year began with my girlfriend at the time. She was keen on introducing the film to me. I had very little idea what the film was about, and I was very much interested in watching what she had to show. Long story short, I was shocked - plain and simple. I was by far from innocent in what I had seen previously when it came to films. This show however crossed many lines that I did not dare breach on my own. I won't go in on explaining the scenes as anyone who's bothered to give this film a watch will immediately know which scenes would likely stir these feelings within me. Now.. with all that said, I did enjoy the film. I had high respect for it. I felt/feel that it was masterfully made and includes many things that other great films have and even some things that other great films fail to achieve. This film has/had a lasting impact. I tend to go on for days remembering how people spoke throughout the film and either use that language myself or at the very least I imagine using it in my daily life and conversations therein. I'm not sure who it was that recommended this film for you both to watch - but I'm grateful to them. Without their influence I'd of not re-watched this and enjoyed myself tonight. Thank you, whoever you might be. :)

Logan Kerlee

In the 70s up till now they use music as a treatment in some hospitals. Apparently it didn't work for him.

Anakin Starkiller

Classy response, Sam. And I love the reactions. Before I stumbled on to an edited reaction you guys posted on Youtube, I thought the whole "reaction" thing was a bit silly. But you guys have grounded critiques of these films, and you just seem like good people (Dave, pay attention). Feels like watching a movie with friends. Happy to give my monthly spare change to support. And I really hope you guys will continue to dig further back into classic film.

Mitchell Smilie

I don't know what the hell they were doing on him some kind of MK Ultra mind wiping shit . Did he deserve it . It really depends on what you think of his actions.

Anakin Starkiller

Framerates for films are universally 24 frames per second. It doesn't matter if it's streaming or DVD. Recorded TV series broadcast framerates may differ from country to country though. I've synced film discs and streaming to TBR and Sam and it's always on time. So it has to be your tech.

Mr. Writhms

David doesn't sound like a nice guy. I don't understand why he would go off like that. Oh the guy maybe had a bad night.

Anakin Starkiller

Even with The Shining this still is his weirdest film.

Anakin Starkiller

My first time watching this was when I was 15, with my girlfriend at the time. She was visiting my house from California and wanted me to watch this with her. I was definitely surprised with it! xD Such a great movie. :)

Logan Kerlee

LOL. Still a little floored by the “DVD” rant that happened earlier. He probably wrote that post while sipping a tall glass of milk and listening to “Singing in the Rain.”

ADPTBL

Sam you're an angel, sorry people can be so rude. And David, really glad to know you won't be in our little community anymore.

Raindog

You never forget the first time you see Clockwork Orange! Imagine what it was like in 1971 when people saw this! Mind blowing! Anyway, Dr Strangelove should be your next Kubrick. It is brilliant!

Michael Rhine

Well, this was a pleasant surprise. I think you picked up on the central theme of the film, the question of free choice. Is it worse to do something bad or to have the choice completely taken away from you? I'm not sure whether you found the film humorous in any way, but that was the main thought for Kubrick. It's more of a black comedy than anything. It's quite misunderstood in that way. People think of it as just this violent film, but the film is pretty absurd in many ways, too absurd to be taken so literally and seriously. The performance by Malcolm Mcdowell will go down in history. Alex is one of the most iconic characters we've seen in cinema. He actually scratched his cornea during the eye-lid lock scene because they're used on patients lying on their backs, not sitting upright. So they slid down, scratched his cornea, and blinded him temporarily. As for the snake, Kubrick only decided to include that when he found out that Mcdowell fears snakes more than anything. As for the spitting scene, Kubrick had them do that several times because he didn't quite "like the spit". Yep that's true. I read that Dr. Strangelove will be your next Kubrick film, but I hope that Eyes Wide Shut will follow soon after. In my opinion, it's Kubrick's most fascinating work. Would love to hear a married couple's view on it. Keep up the great work!

Shehab Dawoud

Good God, maybe it’s you, David. And kudos to Sam for her courtesy and professionalism.

Catherine LW

Poor David having an absolute meltdown because he can't seem to figure out something so simple,I'm quite sure the channel will survive without your £4 a month Sam has gone above and beyond for you there,a very kind gesture and polite about it too

Duncan

Hey David, as we’ve mentioned in the past, we unfortunately do not have the equipment available to record media from a DVD, so all movies are streamed and we include that information at the start of each reaction. We apologize that this has not worked out for you and have issued you a refund for your pledges. We wish you the best and hope you can find another reactor more suited to your needs. -Sam

TBR Schmitt

It definitely is on our list! It looks like likely the next Kubrick film we react to 😊 -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I'm quitting your patreon videos. Every time I have to sync up every couple of minutes. Buy the damn DVD. I only got about 5 minutes in before I had to sync up for the third time. I'll watch somebody else's reactions. I complained about this once before. You had your second chance.

David Ebele

In case anyone doesn't know, he was the bodybuilder at the old guys house at the end of the film. He just passed away towards the end of last year, in November I think.

Mike Tocci

If you haven't seen it, check out Dr. Strangelove -or- How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb. It's one of my favorite Kubrick films and Peter Sellers gives multiple great performances in it. It's a great story worth watching for anyone who hasn't yet.

Mike Tocci

Did you spot David Prowse (who played Darth Vader)?

MotoDork

Was wondering how you would react to this one. Certainly a tough watch and not for everyone. The “Singing in the Rain” segment might be the most disturbing movie scene I’ve ever seen. Unforgettable film though.

Jim Barnes

Personally I consider Barry Lyndon a masterpiece. Many find it slow and plodding. I accept it for the work of art it is.

MotoDork

Great review! You guys did a good job identifying some of the underlying themes.

Rob M

The actor who played Alex's dad played another dad in a Kubrick movie and "corrected" his family.

Rob M

I love that!! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Wow! That’s just awful that it came to that! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

This is one of 2 Kubrick films I've never seen. This and "Barry Lyndon". The rare watching of a first time watch as a first time watch! I'm excited for this. 😁

Mr. Writhms

Oh I know it is. The guy is a complete prick and an asshole. But the brainwashing scenes make you feel horrible for the guy. And the weird ending is just very bizarre and tragic.

Anakin Starkiller

Anthony Burgess said he regretted writing the novel for the same reason.

Catherine LW

Kubrick actually pulled this film from distribution in Britain after people began copying the violent acts they saw in the film.

MotoDork

Excited and worried to hear what you think of the reaction! Haha it was an experience! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha we hope you enjoy! It was a wild ride! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Excited and worried to see this reaction.....lol. I think it's a great movie and like 2001, it gets better each watch.

Rob M

Oh shit man I gotta watch this with you guys tonight and you're Kubrick journey.

Anakin Starkiller

“Oh bliss! Bliss and heaven! Oh it was gorgeousness and gorgeosity.”
