I know, absolutely devastating. It truly shows the horrors of Peleliu. Wow! Is there somewhere you'd recommend reading up on Tarawa?

Dang it! I thought they were the same, but I'll have to give BOB's theme another listen. Both absolutely incredible intros. The chalk in The Pacific intro is on another level.

It's so interesting how they changed it for the series, but I guess they were looking to elicit the exact reaction we had!

Right. Michael Kamen composed the theme for BoB, and he passed away. Hans Zimmer composed the theme for The Pacific.

I couldn't believe Gunny broke. He fought with 5th Marines during WW1 at Bellau Wood, in Singapore, and in Nicaragua during the banana wars. Peleliu was indeed hell. However its my personal 2nd Marine div had it worse on Tarawa. During the two months on Peleliu, 1400 Marines were killed. On Tarawa, a little over 1000 were killed in just 3 days.

And yeah, the themes from this and Band of Brothers are completely different. The both summon similar emotions over images of war, so I get why Sam would think that.

In reality it wasn't Snafu that stopped Eugene from taking the gold tooth. It was the Doc, Doc Caswell as Snafu mentions. Sledge in his book relates that the doc saw he was about to cross that line into deeper inhumanity and told him about the germs. Eugene felt he did it not because of the germs but to save a shred of his humanity. The book is a fascinating read and I highly recommend it. The scene with Snafu throwing pebbles into the lower half of a dead Japanese soldier's head actually occurred as well.
