I once read there were three stages of combat pyschology for a soldier:
Stage 1: This is a green soldier who's never seen combat or seen a little. They think they won't be hurt because they're lucky, they're too good, they enemy's too dumb, etc. They used troops like this for a lot of the Normandy landings because green troops don't know what they're in for and are better at rushing through heavy fire at fortified positions.
Stage 2: This is the experinced soldier and where most of Easy Company is at where they have the "I will die unless I'm careful" mentality. They know what can happen, but they are still able to fight effectively and know the things to do to mitigate circumstances.
Stage 3: This is where a soldier has been pushed to far. They believe they WILL die. Nothing will change that. No amount of luck, training, skill, ect will They are no longer combat effective and will only fight if you put a gun to their head.

If you read Beyond band of brothers the memoirs of Dick Winters he even says that he didn't understand why Sink wanted the second patrol after the first had losses. He honestly said to the men if he they ever told anyone while they were in the military that he lied about the 2nd patrol it would be very bad for him, none of the men ever said a word.

Great reaction. Sadly, Lt. Jones was killed in a Jeep accident near Berlin a year or so later.

Interesting fact. In this episode it shows Cobb getting drunk and mouthing off to Webster and Lt. Jones. In real life, Cobb (and another soldier) actually did get drunk and got into an argument except it was with Lt. Foley. They tried to attack him and were court-martial-ed for it. I believe Sgt. Martin was gonna shoot Cobb for his behaviour but Lt. Foley prevented him from doing it. I never noticed from the first time I watched the show but at the very end of the episode, when they're all leaving on the trucks, you can actually see Cobb being driven away in a jeep with three MP's sitting in it. Very cool that they slip in these little details.
