Computer Trouble

So I've already gotten some good feeback, but since I don't undestand much computer language, I'm always left feeling like "It MAY be this, or it MAY be that." I don't know what specs I need to know. I guess I can install more RAM but I don't want to do that if it doesn't help. Photoshop is the only program I have trouble with. I understand 2GBs is actually pretty large, and I can make it smaller by compressing layers, but that is SUPER inconvenient for me if I want to edit something.

If it is ram, be sure that you plug in the sticks appropriately in the slots and by that I mean, you need to find out which one that you need to plug in for you certain motherboard. You can probably find a online manual for your motherboard so you can figure out in what order to put them in. Also 64 bit Windows because the limit on 32 bit is 4gb ram (windows 7).

Unrelated to the actual tech question, that monkey girl is hot.

oooooooh. Is that a thing. The sounds like a real roadblock if it is. I'm almost sure it is 64 bit though, because the question of 32 or 64 came up once, and the answer was 64

For the 2 gigs limit... could it be because the application is a 32 bit one ? Windows has a limit of 2 gigs of RAM for a 32 bit application.

CPU is good - graphics card is older, but probably not a big issue, should be working fine (though they are 3 series past that one, so probably something to keep on the horizon as to be upgraded at some point) - RAM is nice at 16BG, but bumping it up to 32GB should make a significant difference - what you'll have to buy will depend, like everyone else said, on further specs of what works with your motherboard - also, you may be able to buy just 2 8GB sticks to double your RAM, but that's only if your machine has two sticks of 8GB RAM now - if currently all four slots are full with 4GB sticks, you'll have to buy a full four pack of 8GB sticks to totally replace and get to 32GB - the total versus available might indicate that your RAM is not working effectively, that something is wrong, another reason to replace - also, are you using an older version of Photoshop? If you're using 5 or 4 or something even older, than that might be a large part of the issue as well as the program might simply be unable to effectively deal with it ...

while using different model of RAM is possible and can work it's recommended (very strongly) to take identical sticks, you can even find them sold in packs of 4*8GB.
But if you do only want to add 16GB to the ones you already have you need to know the frequency of them and if it's DDR3 or 4. (for explanation if you have two 8Gb sticks, one can be at 1333MHrz and the other at 2600MHrz if you buy them seperatly and while you motherboard will usually manage (by under powering the better one) it's not really good idea.
I'll let the others tell me if i'm wrong but DDR3 won't work with DDR4.

Also there is a programe called CPU-Z that can give you lots of info about the stuff you have installed http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html (it will also tell you what model of motherboard you have, just don't be scared with the amount of info it will give you :p)

adding RAM is very simple but i need to stress some details, just so you don't buy some for nothing. Like i said your motherboard is really important to know if you are going to add RAM, as it will tell you what you can buy. So you musn't buy DDR4 RAM if your motherboard can only handle DDR3 and same for frequency and how much memory you can add, and how many slot are available on your board. Also it's better to completely replace the RAM you have rather than adding RAM that has different specs than the one you currently have. I know i'm repeating myself a bit here but it is important.

Ophis

Sorry forgot to add If you but ram it has to be of the same type (two sticks of corsair 8 gig and two sticks of kilobyte 8 gig for eg....OR 4 sticks of corsair 8 gig but not one of Corsair, One of fluffy bunny, one from kilobyte and one slot empty) Sorry my fathers a computer tech/program designer so I muddle terms, tell me if you need me to better explain it

Okay Memory comes in sticks usually in pairs because the space on your mother board for them are (twins) meaning that there are two sets of two (usually different colours) and when you place ram in them they add up together(lets say 2 sticks of 4 gig), if you buy 4 sticks of ram of 8 gig each the total is 32 gig all together. Thankfully youve already got 16 gig of ram so you'll just need an additional 2 sticks of 8 to total two lots of 16 gig.

SorrowBorn

Hoping I just need more ram. Would 4 sticks of 8 mean 4 different items? Like each stick is its own thing, or is that a term of measurement?

I'll figure that out today. I'm hoping it is as simple as the youtube videos show.

Was looking around a bit and another thing that pops up is an SSD hard disk that would alow better transfer rates, along with upgrading to 32GB or RAM. But once again we would need to know what motherboard you have since some don't support 32GB of RAM

Okay with these specs available to me I can say a few things for certain. A) It is not your CPU Processor as it is a damn bit stronger than mine, heck I don't even use a dual core and I can run PSD files. B) I'm pushing more towards that what MIGHT be happening is that your memory is: 1) Lower than what is needed to run PSD files of that size (However I run something in the way of 32 gig of ram with 26 available at any one time) in which case the only thing you need is to buy more memory (I'd personally advise 4 sticks of 8 gigs to bring you up to 32gig) or...bad news 2) One of your Ram sticks may be faulty, showing up as a positive for memory but not actually processing the memory whenever you run something. in which case you'll need to swap it out, usually that only happened with older sticks but the fault might still be happening. The final test I'd ask you to perform is this: In the case of Memory: Open up what ever program you use to PSD with, and begin working...the MOMENT it starts to lag open up Task manager with the Crtl Alt Delete command I talked about earlier (then click on task manager button), Click on the 'processes' tab and see how much memory the program you use is taking OR if its another program 'stealing' it. In the case of potential malware (Which can indeed lead to memory guzzling programs) Download Malwarebytes, it is a free program that works amazingly well and after installing let it scan your computer for malware. Malware can be MUCH more insidious than viruses at getting into crucial files. Afterwards if you dont like the program delete it, I've done it before with no harmful effects on both my PC and Laptop. https://www.malwarebytes.com/ If those those suggestions do not work, try buying more Memory (Ram) if THAT doesnt work, contact a computing professional.

Ok, additionaly check which programs start with your machine, to ensure you not have strange programs running

Jeez. I hope not. I take it on faith that my anti-virus stuff is dong its thing.

I don't know. I googled "How to look up my system specs" to get to system information, and I just typed out whatever numbers looked important. That's what it says. It says my 'installed' physical memory is 16, but my 'available' physical memory is 10. It also says my 'total' virtual memory is 18, so I have no fucking clue. I'm happy to hear that RAM might be the issue though. That seems easy to fix.

Yes, the specs seem good make sure you not have malwares installed, that sometimes affect performance

Well GTX 750Ti even if not the best is still a decent card, but i think you got the memory wrong since that card has 2048MB memory but never mind. So Graphics card is fine if you ask me. CPU looks good a Core i7 are very decent. 16GB of RAM would be where you might have a probleme as that would be fine for Gaming and general stuff but photoshop and video editing usually requiers more. But what do you mean with 10GB of available Memory? Where did you get that number? Also is there a way to know what your motherboard manufactuer and model is ? Do you have windows 10? Also if someone else has an idea
