CM Punk's return tentatively planned by AEW

CM Punk has expressed his willingness to return to AEW, and it seems like the pieces are being put into place for it to happen.

We will preface and follow this with the disclaimer that nothing is set in stone, and things can change as this is an often tumultuous situation.

Fightful Select had been getting hints after April 12’s report that Punk wanted to come back to AEW, that the wheels were already in motion. We were told shortly before the announcement of Chicago at Wintrust Arena that the June 21 episode of Dynamite would be interesting, and a date to look out for. What we’ve learned since then is as of April 13, the working plan has been for CM Punk to return at that show, or at the very least around it. There were also pitches of announcing it well ahead of time, even around the Warner Upfronts, which are May 17.

Those that we’ve spoken to confirmed that CM Punk has been hoping to work with Kenny Omega and Young Bucks, but we’ve heard of no contact between the two sides. The last we’d heard, The Elite were not keen on the possibility of working with him. AEW sources indicated that Punk had been trying to push for a meeting between everyone for quite a while, but we haven't heard if any progress had been made. It's worth noting that Young Bucks and Kenny Omega are in the middle of negotiating new contracts with AEW.

We’re told that there was also a meeting planned between CM Punk and Chris Jericho, who have had numerous issues in the past, to see if the two working together is a possibility.

There’s been a lot more traction within Warner Bros Discovery about an impending announcement of a prime time Saturday show being designed for a bit of a soft roster split to accommodate the preferences of talent who wanted to stay separate of the particular situations, though talent haven't been informed of that. Talent we’ve spoken to have heard the discussions about a new show, but haven’t heard about Punk’s possible impending return.

As with anything, things can change, but specifically in this situation that has been brewing for the better part of the year. Thus far none of this has been set in stone as best we can tell.

I disagree, if they can’t make a story out of this then that’s just a missed opportunity. If they can’t meet to work out a story then they don’t deserve to be doing business.

I am not a businessman but maybe SRS or other managers of business could answer this form me. I understsnd money is a top priority BUT when you have all those thin-skinned situations like Punk, isn't an important factor of bringing him back, is can TK, WBD and all the locker room actually trust Punk not to do all the unprofessional things and airing dirty laundry. If you can't trust your top star how would that work.

Jericho wasn't directly wronged. Punk said nothing about him at that press conference. Just because someone won't take the meeting today doesn't mean they won't take it at all. It means that Punk has to convince them to take the meeting. He was the one who went over the line not The Elite.

Burying the entire company in a media scrum, calling Hangman an "empty-headed dumbfuck" while lying about him being in the business for himself over an offhand comment on workers' rights, insulting the EVPs that are literally his bosses, literally starting a physical altercation and fighting said EVPs in front of an HR rep, trying to mess with the investigation by bringing up alleged new info about his dog being injured when that wasn't even the case, further changing his story enough times that it'd be comparable to Big Show's various turns as a character throughout his time in WWE, claiming Colt shared a bank account with his mother in a weird attempt to make him look bad over their falling out, etc. etc. etc.

What actions?

Gary

I think it’s funny, Jericho will take a meeting but the elite won’t. Shows you who the professional ones really are.

Blake Ryan

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that if he's willing to have a meeting with The Elite as well as Jericho, then he's(hopefully) willing to own up and apologize for his actions. I doubt even Punk would be crazy enough to think they'd wanna work with him after everything as if to pretend nothing ever happened.

CSDX

It would be amazing, but I think Punk can't say he wants to come back, he has to earn it by making amends, the bucks, Kenny, hangman--and whatever he personally thinks of Colt Cabana, the press conference was not the time to air his side of the dispute. All that should be addressed, but it seems he'll be back either way.

I really want to believe that the two sides can make it work even if only for the pay day that would be involved. AEW could really use a juicy storyline that could be as interesting as the Bloodline stuff in WWE.

Andrew Placko

its so funny to me how after all the details that came out about the backstage brawl, ppl are still putting full blame on the elite and claiming their egos are too big to want to work with punk. May I remind you who trashed the elite in front of his boss and pretty much all of wrestling media. there are people who have growing up to do and buddy I can tell you it ain’t the elite. Plus, if you watch All Access you’d know the bucks straight up said they regretted the whole thing and wish it never went down. so stop trying to make this a 1 size fits all issue and blame 1 party for it. You’re just being a disingenuous asshole. Both were wrong but from all the stories that have been collected, punk and steel started the physical altercation. I’m not trying to pick sides because I actually like both parties body of work (not ace steel) but lets look at what we know and make an honest assessment instead of being a brainlet and blaming 1 side for this incident.

If the elite just don't renew their contracts, then TK cannot "throw in" a non-compete. If the elite don't want to work with Punk, they do have the option to just leave AEW by not signing a new contract. If CM was a professional, maybe he wouldn't trashed the entire company at the press conference then started fight with elite afterwards. Ironic how people think the Bucks need to be professional when Punk has been anything but professional.

David Feig

If the Elite are the professionals they claim they are they work with anyone. TK cannot pay Punk to just sit and he won't let him go. WWE has this hiring freeze and a sale. If the Elite go, TK could throw in a non compete clause...It could get sticky for them. There IS enough talent to keep them somewhat separated if needed until an agreement is reached.

I wonder how this affects the contract negotiations with the Young Bucks and Kenny Omega

interested to see if he's heel or a face, and the crowd reaction to his return (if it happens)

Just go a head and let him come back. All of AEW will make bank. And give the Elite and friends Dynamite and Punk and friends could have the new Saturday show. Rampage can be a developmental.

NateF_81

Not sure how the timing will work with his return and the current Elite/BCC feud. They seem to be building it up to last a while.

The Bucks and Omega and the elite need to just swallow their pride and print some $$$$

Sidenote: I genuinely am not interested at all in watching Punk vs. Jericho. Work with the Elite or work with MJF.

It would be pretty damn silly for the Bucks to refuse to make this an angle because of embarrassment or something. This would be the hottest storyline in wrestling and be extremely good for business. Refusing to work with Punk IMMEDIATELY is dumb. It's been like 7 months. Legal proceedings are done (I assume, considering Punk's returning). Fuckin just work with the guy to boost both AEW and your own profiles. That's how you sell out Wembley Stadium. No one is fuckin selling out Wembley Stadium to watch the Young Bucks take on the Lucha Bros for the 17th time, they want to watch (1) MJF, and (2) FTRPunk vs. The Elite.
