He's a physical therapist outside of pro wrestling, which he says has helped extend his career. Also, he's credited by several pro wrestlers in helping them stay healthy or get healthy. He was actually a full time student when he was in ECW and WCW, noting the challenges.
He says that Kevin Sullivan reached out through a promoter named Tony Rumble and brought him into WCW for cruiserweight work. Then he went into ECW, and Diamond Dallas Page helped reopen a door for him in WCW. He said ECW didn't work out for him and felt like he was the most unpopular guy in the locker room. He got his shot with David Flair and Daffney after working WCW Saturday night, and impressing Vince Russo with his look. David Flair was popping a rating for WCW and they wanted to create a story for him and accelerate some other talent, and add him to a team with a more seasoned partner.
He mentioned that around the original WWF Light Heavyweight tournament there were actually talks that he would join the roster full time and be on the road with the company as a wrestler and road physical therapist, but it never happened.
