I see how that would cause devastating guilt to those with a conscience which makes the Demon Lords words about Gilbert hit all the harder. That’s a good route for Gilbert’s characterization, a bit more grim than what I thought up but good in its own way.

He don't want to kill his friends but he still duty bound to his mission. So he secretly wish he just die from the fight so he don't have to feel the guilt and can blame it to demon lord. Hero must die there is no alternative way to stop demon lord from coming back.
