Caturday with Open Eyes

One of you wanted to do if my cat does nothing but sleep, and I believe that answer to that is... mostly, yes. 20 hours out of 24, maybe? Lol. Cats, seriously. Anyway, here he is, objecting to the question. OF COURSE he does nothing but sleep. What self-respecting cat spends most of his time awake??

Things proceed! I'm just about done with the material for the next Conversations book, which should bring us up to date with those, and I'm still working on the Palland novella, plus doing some painting, calligraphy, or livestreaming. Also a lot of reading. Tomorrow is the day of celebratory ham and cake and lots and lots of chocolate, which the whole family is looking forward to.

My big thing now is trying to find a family activity that's not board games, and not watching TV, because I want some variety. Any thoughts on that would be appreciated!

Anyway, cat. Because pet photo. 😊

If you've got the space, an indoor or outdoor backyard croquet game is easy to play with either a proper croquet set or improvised out of red cups and household toys. Endless variations. Two story house? Use the stairs as part of the course. Ping pong or Nerf balls work great indoors with rambunctious kids. Soccer golf can be fun in the backyard or driveway. Basketball played with something other than the usual ball can entertain for hours.

Collaborative writing or art games like Exquisite Corpse? (My schools called it "round robin writing/drawing" or "the monster game.") Tabletop/pen-and-paper roleplaying games are also collaborative storytelling but maybe that's too close to board games for you. Gardening? I don't know if you have a yard, but container gardens work with just a porch or enough light indoors to put them by windows. Hydroponics works even without either. There are a lot of possible DIY setups ranging from big/advanced to "yogurt cup in mason jar," or ready-made systems like Aerogarden if you don't want to buy components and build them yourselves. Bonus: food! Something that we and our friends enjoy is playing videogames together, with each person voiceacting different characters, debating what actions to take at decision points, and trading off the controller every so often. Voiceacting is obviously best with dialogue-heavy games like JRPGs (the Persona series is one of my all-time favorites) and especially visual novels, but anything can be fun if the story and characters are interesting enough to provoke discussions while playing.
