From the Closet: Chicon Flier

Or at least, I'm pretty sure this is a flier from Chicon. The first one I attended, in 2000, when it was the Worldcon. Prior to the con, Elizabeth Barrette and I got together to discuss topics and prepare materials for some of the panels we were on, and she was the one who suggested we do fliers to attract people (not a minor matter, since worldcons tend to have lots of simultaneous programming). We collaborated on the text, and I did the art and hosted the downloads on stardancer (we had some lists of links and a bibliography, if I remember right).

I enjoyed doing the art, I remember. (Check out her patch, it actually has real words and stuff!) And it's interesting to scan the panelists, thinking about people who are still active and people who aren't in the industry.

That was my first Worldcon too. After the one in 2016, I went back to look at that one and was shocked to see you in the program book! If only I had known! It really is an interesting look to see who's still around and who isn't. It was so different back then. In many ways too (Remember how "pocket sized" those programs were? lol) The Internet has really has changed a lot. Thank you for sharing this pit of history. Very cool.

I was at that Worldcon, & would've loved to have found y'all for that panel. Aside from spending a lot of time lost [multiple levels of intricate underground are so confusing], I was chasing filk things. There was a Greek place that had the most fabulous chocolate desserts, with chocolate sauce to dip them in. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it again in 2012. --filkferengi
