Three Jaguars, Chap 1: Many Roles, Introduction

So, as promised, I am reposting the business columns as I re-read, edit, and re-scan the art for them in preparation for the book. I am really glad I'm doing this, because a lot of the art needs fixing--like, more than I remembered. (This is my glum look.) Also, Patreon's not the best place for this, because it still balks on huge posts/inline images... like it will let me post a few, and then lock up.

However, I still think posting it in bits is better than not posting it at all! And it's definitely motivating me to go through the columns and fix them up for the eventual print edition. So I'm gonna keep on keeping on with this and hopefully by the end of the year I'll have something I can go to print with...!

Here's the intro to Chapter 1, where we discuss the three jaguar's roles. Enjoy!

***

Our first step in embarking on any business endeavor as an artist is to realize that there's more than one role involved in making a business work. The moment you hand over something in return for money, you're not longer just the Artist... now your concerns have expanded to include how to handle money, how to get your art into people's hands, and how to arrange things so both those things happen more often.

By my way of thinking, there are three basic roles: Business Manager, Marketer, and Artist. Artist can be taken to mean any artistic endeavor: writing, craft-making, singing... whatever you're trying to make money on. Veterans of larger companies will note that I've folded Sales into Marketing, which is a personal bias. Don't worry, Marketer's pretty energetic, she can handle it.

Without further ado, then, the Three Jaguars!

Just as a fun exercise for the artist/maker/careerists in the room... try visualizing your version of Business Manager, Marketer, and Artist!

Comments

Minor typo: pretty sure in the text, sentence should read: "The moment you hand over something in return for money, you're >no< longer just the Artist..." Spellcheck wouldn't catch this.

You're very wise about trying to make money through creative ventures--I'm glad the Three Jaguars will have a print release!

Adorbs! ^_^

I loved your original 3 Jags. I tried to use that to turn people on to you. The art expressed the emotions well, and was good enough for that. So I loved the original art. But if you think it needs an upgrade, so be it. Go for it. I will love that too.

Talk about great minds thinking alike--or at least fanning! I just read your _Rational Arrangement_ this week & loved it! It was definitely worth the full print price. :) --filkferengi
